HAVE CONVERSATIONS WITH INSTRUCTORS, COACHES AND TEACHERS FOR AN HONEST ASSESSMENT OF TALENT.

CONTINUE TO WORK ON PORTFOLIOS AND AUDITION MATERIALS IN PREPARATION FOR ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS (AP STUDIO ART PORTFOLIO, SCHOOL PLAY, CONCERTS, ETC.)

WITH THE HELP OF THE COLLEGE COUNSELOR, RESEARCH BOTH AUDITION/PORTFOLIOREVIEW ANY NON-AUDITION/NON-PORTFOLIO SCHOOLS.INVESTIGATE SUMMER PROGRAMS TO SEE IF YOU REALLY WANT TO COMMIT TO YOUR CRAFT. THIS CAN BE A GOOD TRIAL RUN.

SUMMER BEFORE SENIOR YEAR, STUDENTS:

CONTINUE TO WORK ON THEIR SKILLS: TAKE CLASSES, PRACTICE, PERFORM, ETC.

WITH PARENTS, DISCUSS & PLAN THE APPROPRIATE NUMBER OF FALL AUDITIONS & VISITS. THESE CAN BE COSTLY.

START INVESTIGATION OF SPECIFIC AUDITION/PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ON PERFECTING THEM.VISUAL ARTISTS CAN PARTICIPATE IN SUMMER PROGRAMS THAT FOCUS ON PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT.

THE TIMELINE AND PROCESS:FALL OF SENIOR YEAR, STUDENTS:

SHOULD START SCHEDULING AUDITIONS EARLY. SOME SCHOOLS ADMIT ON A FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVE BASIS.

CONTINUE TO WORK ON PORTFOLIOS AND AUDITION MATERIALS IN PREPARATION FOR ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS.

VISUAL ARTISTS CAN OFTEN SCHEDULE PORTFOLIO REVIEWS AT SCHOOLS THAT INTEREST THEM.

BE MINDFUL OF ADMISSIONS APPLICATION DEADLINES AND REQUIREMENTS.

SHOULD NOT LET GRADES FALTER. SCHOOLS STILL WANT TO SEE A STRONG ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE.

BE REALISTIC. ADMISSIONS TO SOME OF THESE PERFORMANCE/AUDITION PROGRAMS IS EXTREMELY SELECTIVE.

NEVER FEAR. STUDENTS CAN STILL HAVE A WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE AND EARN GAINFUL EMPLOYMENT IF THEY ATTEND COLLEGES WHERE NO AUDITION OR PORTFOLIO IS NEEDED.

MYTHS AND ASSUMPTIONS I HAVE HAD THE LEAD IN THE PAST TWO MUSICALS AND THEREFORE, WILL BE

ADMITTED TO ALL OF THE SCHOOLS AT WHICH I AUDITION.THE CHAIR OF THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT AT “X” UNIVERSITY SAID I WAS HIS TOP PICK SO I AM

IN THERE!I WON THE VISUAL ARTS AWARD AT MY HIGH SCHOOL; RISD WILL REALLY WANT ME!BECAUSE I HAVE WON NATIONAL AWARDS IN GRAPHIC DESIGN, I WILL BE ADMITTED TO

ANY ART PROGRAM OF MY CHOICE.I TRAIN OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL WITH A NATIONALLY KNOWN OPERA STAR.MY DAD WENT TO JULLIARD, SO I’M A LEGACY AND WILL BE ADMITTED.I DID WELL AT A COLLEGE’S SUMMER PROGRAM SO I WILL BE ADMITTED THERE FOR SURE.
