It’s been an incredible 8 months as UCC’s ParliamentaryIntern working with Chrystia Freeland in her Parliament Hilloffice. I wanted to share some of my experiences and giveyou a sense of my work here in Ottawa. Thank you onceagain the Ukrainian National Federation of Canada forbeing the founding sponsor of this fantastic program, andto the many individuals who have also made contributionsto support the program.

Working on Parliament Hill means being constantly up-to-date about the latest news in Canada and around theworld, especially since I’m working for MP ChrystiaFreeland, who is Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. Thisalso means knowing what the other MPs are saying abouther work. For me this involves constant monitoring of themedia, social media and other sources.

Very often new challenges arise in foreign affairs, especiallyhuman rights related ones, and Minister Freeland needs tobe able to react quickly. That’s why one of my main roles isto prepare research on the main issues before meetings, question period or press-conferences. I also attenddifferent committee meetings and then report back on thediscussions and topics raised.

In February, I got a chance for professional developmentthrough a series of parliamentary seminars, such as “TheRole of a Federal Ombudsperson”, “Speech WritingFundamentals”, “PMB 101: Basic considerations for draftingPrivate member’s bill” and “Search Engine Optimization:How to increase your website’s visibility online”.

It’s been a great year thus far – full of new knowledge, experience and friends. I met incredible people inParliament and learned a lot from Chrystia Freeland. I havejust a few months left here in the office and I’m alreadystarting to look at how I can build my future career here inOttawa. I am very grateful to UCC and all the sponsors whosupported me and this program, and I’m looking forwardto helping train next year`s UCC Parliamentary Interns!

“MYTH/Міф” DOCUMENTARY BRINgS STORY OFUKRAINIAN HERO WASSYl SlIPAK TO CANADA

In February-April 2018, audiences across Canada had the opportunity to view theacclaimed documentary film “Myth/Міф”, from directors Leonid Kanter and Ivan Yasnij.Myth tells the story of the life and death of Wassyl Slipak, an internationally renownedopera star who returned to Ukraine to defend his homeland.

Taking a leading role in the Revolution of Dignity and leading the volunteer movementin Paris, Wassyl Slipak put his opera career on hold and joined the ranks of a volunteerbattalion when his native Ukraine was invaded by Russia. He took the pseudonym “Myth”from his favorite aria, Mephistopheles.

Wassyl Slipak died in combat near Luhansk on June 29, 2016. He was posthumouslyawarded the title of Hero of Ukraine.

Myth is a story of patriotism, heroism, sacrificeand the centuries-long struggle of the Ukrainianpeople to live in freedom and peace on their ownland. That struggle continues today on thebattlefields and trenches of eastern Ukraine.

25 screenings of Myth were held in 19 cities acrossCanada, from Montreal to Edmonton. Orest Slipak,Wassyl’s brother, joined the directors for the filmtour, which was organized by Dopomoha Ukraini –Aid Ukraine, with the support of the UkrainianCanadian Congress.

“In telling Wassyl Slipak’s story, the film in turn tellsthe story of the thousands of Ukrainian volunteerswho took up arms to defend their country fromRussia’s invasion. They all felt the calling andresponsibility to act, the same way Wassyl feltthis,” stated Andrij Potichnyj, Director atDopomoha Ukraini and the co-organizer of thetour. “It is now our responsibility to help Ukraine’sveterans integrate back into society, and to make

sure that heroes like Wassyl and thousands more who have been killed are never forgotten. We feel very strongly that the worldmust know these stories, and we will continue to work tirelessly to make sure this happens.”

Proceeds from the tour are dedicated to supporting Dopomoha Ukraini’s ATO Family Rehabilitation Program, which assists Ukraine’sveterans and their families in overcoming the effects of PTSD and other issues arising from combat service; the Wassyl SlipakFoundation; and towards financing applications for Myth for international film festivals and aiding the future production of Ukrainiancinema.

Following the successful Canadian tour, Myth is currently a European tour and will premiere in Paris in June. The filmmakers haveapplied to more than 60 international film festival, including Cannes, TIFF and Sundance.

The organizers ехpress their gratitude to all the volunteers in every city that helped in ensuring the success of the tour and the followingsponsors for their generous support:
