Reception Home Learning - Week 10Dear Reception,Please could you practice with your grown ups, or your sister or brother the following work. From, Reception Teachers.

1. I am an author (Writing)Practise writing set one sounds and spelling green and red words.Green words –

Shop, ship, fish, that, this, them, sing, song, thing.

Red Words –

Your, me, my, you, said, the, they.

Ask your child to tell you a ‘helicopter story’ (they might know what this means). This is where your child tells you any story they like and you write it down for them. When they are finished, read it back to them and ask them if they are happy with their story or if there is anything they would like to add. Then, you can act out their story using other family members or teddies/toys for the other characters. If they enjoy this, they can make as many Helicopter stories as they want!

Ask your child to pick a character from their story to draw. While they are drawing their character you can ask them questions like what is the character doing? What is around him? What colours can you see? What would your character be able to smell? What is your character going to do next? Then your child can label their character. If your child is not a confident writer they may need help to hear the sounds they need to write for each word. If your child is a confident writer they can write some phrases or sentences about what their character is doing and why.

2. I am a scientist.Talk to your child throughout the week about all the ways they are amazing and special. This is a hard time for everyone; they may be feeling quite unsettled, upset or angry at not being able to see their friends and have their normal routine. If appropriate, you can talk to them about going back to school on the 1st of June and what they should expect when coming back. Create a family tree together to remember the family members you are not able to hug just yet – you can use the ones below or create your own. Talk about what you love about each family member and what you would like to do for them when you can see them again. You and your child may get upset at missing your family members but it is important to talk about this and allow them to show and explore their feelings.

Ask your child to create the ‘All About Me’ booklet below – we created these booklets at school in September and it would be interesting to look at the differences between them. Talk to your child about how they think they’ve changed and grown throughout the year, what they’ve gotten better at and what they would still like to learn about.

Complete the ‘I am Amazing’ poster below with you writing their answers for them; your child may need a lot of help with this as it is sometimes hard to think about positive aspects of yourself. If they want to, they can ask other members of the family to help them or could even do the same activity for different members of their family.

3. I am a mathematician.Support your child with making some number cards by cutting out21 squares of paper and writing their numbers up to 20 onthem (including 0). When your child is busy/sleeping, hide the numbers around the house and ask them to try to find themwithin a certain amount of time (the time limit makes it a bitmore fun – you can use https://www.online-stopwatch.com if you want to).

4. I am an author (Reading)Go to ruthmiskin.com for a daily Phonics lesson

Support during School Closure for Parents and CarersRWI Phonics lessons at homeWe are streaming three, short Speed Sounds lessons for children to watch at home every weekday on our YouTube channel.

Once they have found all the numbers, ask your child to order the numbers to make a number line. You could peg the number line on a washing line, stick it to the wall, or lay it out on the floor like stepping stones. They can then use this number line to practice recognising their numbers and counting and ordering numbers up to 20.

You can also practise capacity (how full something is) by exploring the different cups, bowls, mugs and water bottles around the house. With some supervision, your child can fill the different cups with water and look at the difference between full, nearly full, half full, nearly empty and empty (it might be a good idea to do this outside or on hard flooring, things might get messy!). Then, you could work together to talk about and explore which cup holds the least amount of water and which holds the least. Ask your child what they think the answers will be first and why, then use a measuring jug or bucket to find the answer.

Each lesson is ten minutes long and available for 24 hours. Don't worry if children miss a lesson. Once each set has been shown, we will replay one a day from each set. You can also watch Story Time with Nick; with a new story available every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2 o’clock.

Set 1 Speed Sounds 9.30 am (BST) - for children in Nursery and Reception and children who are new to English

Set 2 Speed Sounds 10.00 am - for children in Reception that can read Set 1 Speed Sounds and for children in Year 1 and 2

If you do not have internet access, you can continue to practise reading and writing the green and read words mentioned above, making sure the size, formation and position of the letters are correct.

5. I am an author (Reading)There are some lovely book readings on the Walker Books Youtube channel that your child can watch. Have a look at ‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt’ – your child should know this book well as we have done it in school. They can make their own bear hunt using things from around the house: you could use things like a rug for grass, a bath for water, or a duvet for mud, but go with your child’s ideas first. Your child can use this as a type of obstacle course, seeing how fast they can get through it without the bear catching them!

Have a look at Follow Me, Flow. When your child has listened carefully to the story, you can ask them the questions: What must duckies do every day? Why was Little Flow a naughty duckie? What did daddy duck tell Little Flow to do? Do you prefer Daddies song or Little Flow’s song, and why? Who was following Daddy Duck? Who was following Little Flow? How did Little Flow find Daddy Duck again? What did Little Flow learn in the story? Why did Daddy Duck go ‘quaaaack’ at the end? If your child is not sure the questions, they can watch the story again with you pointing out the information they need.

If you do not have internet access at home, you can pick any number of books from around the house, read them to your child and ask the questions below.

6. I am an AthleteGoogle – ‘Joe Wicks' PE lessons’ and there are many to chose from or follow Jo’s workout live Monday to Friday at 9am. YOUTUBE.COM/THEBODYCOACHOR Try Cosmic Yoga at YOUTUBE.COM/COSMICYOGAThey might enjoy the Troll and Friends workout (click here).

If you do not have access to the internet at home, you can carry on the theme of We’re going on a Bear Hunt by making lots of different obstacle courses for your child to complete. Encourage your child to help you make the obstacle courses too. You can include things like stepping up and down chairs, crawling under duvets, jumping over pillows, tiptoeing between toys, and balancing on rolled up blankets.
