Basic Organization of Paragraphs in an article

Follow these instructions in order to find out about the structure an article should take.

    1- Observe the image below:

    2- Now match

1 Avoid beginning a paragraph with afact. Facts, by definition, are true; theydo not need to be proved. Instead, give yourself something to prove fromthe beginning of the paragraph, andstay focused on proving that claim orclaims in the rest of the paragraph.

2- Each body paragraph of the articleshould begin with a topic sentence thatpresents the main claim or claims thatyou will prove in the paragraph.

3- You should include a restatementof topic, usually at the beginning of theconclusion. In the rest of theconclusion, make readers think aboutthe importance of what you haveexplained in the essay.

4- The statement should present, injust one sentence and usually at theend of the introduction, all of the mainpoints that you develop in the body ofthe essay. You should formulate thethesis statement from the main pointspresented in the topic sentences ofbody paragraphs.5- In the rest of the paragraph, youshould use specific facts to supportand develop the main claim or claimsof the topic sentence. The topicsentence should give you a purpose inthe paragraph: to prove a point.

The following paragraphs have been taken from a journal article.

1.- Write the number of the sentence 1, 2 or 3 so it makes a coherent and logical paragraph:

    A)

Besides that, we looked briefly at the consequences that poor sleep

    quality might lead to.

The purpose of our study was to assess the sleep quality among

university students, as well as find the factors that might influence it.

    B)

It was found that 67% of the students actually suffer from sleep

    disturbances and poor sleep quality.

Our study was conducted on university student. 105 males and 185

females voluntarily participated in the study.

    C)

Previous studies show that smoking alters the normal sleeping pattern

and causes poor sleep quality (Mesquita, 2011).

Our study also showed that non-smokers had a better sleep quality

(25%) than smokers (75%), but this did not have a strong significance.

D)However, those using social networking for 0.5-2 hours a day had the

best sleep quality among the groups, but the result again cannot be

taken into consideration due to the non-significant sleeping hours

    value.

Non-users of social networking, such as Facebook, msn, and twitter,

had a better sleep quality than users.

    E)

Only 35% of students having good sleep quality suffered from anxiety,

while on the other hand, it was 63% for students having poor sleep

    quality

One of the results with great significance was feeling anxious during

the day due to sleeping disturbances.

This shows that a good nights sleep has a great impact on feeling

comfortable during the day, and decreases anxiety levels.

F)When the students were asked about the number of classes missed

during the previous month due to lack of sleep, we found that 62% of

the students who never missed any class had a good sleeping pattern,

while only 11% of them missed more than 5 classes.

Conversely, 58% of students who have sleep disturbances missed 1 or

more class in the previous month.

It was interesting to find out the effects of poor sleep quality among

students on their activities during the day.

In 2012, a Congressional report showed that patients suffer abuse or neglect in one in three

nursing homes in the United States.

In a nationwide survey conducted in 2010, about 50 percent of nursing home staff surveyed

admitted they had mistreated their older patients within the past year. Most of those

instances included neglect of the patient.

Earlier this year, a circuit judge in West Virginia upheld a $91.5 million verdict against a

nursing home in the death of an 87-year-old woman with Alzheimer's.

Accusations against employees at the Georgia nursing home included "double diapering" of

patients, so that the staff would not have to change soiled diapers as often, authorities said.

Investigators also discovered that staff members at the facility had felony convictions on

charges such as voluntary manslaughter and identify theft, according to the statement.

The owner, Donna Wright, is among those facing criminal charges, including cruelty to a

person 65 years or older, abuse, neglect and financial exploitation, said John Heinen, a

spokesman for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

    ARTICLE 3

California Civil Code 3080 et seq. provides for a livestock service lien. This is special type

of possessory lien that gives a stable owner a lien on the horse whose owner has stopped

paying the bills. This lien secures the owners contractual obligations to the stable for the

board that has been provided, and allows the stable to retain possession of the horse until

the outstanding board fees are paid.

However, in many situations the livestock service lien is not the best way for a stable to

obtain payment of past due board because of the expenses involved.

Foreclosing on a livestock service lien in California is very expensive. First, a civil lawsuit

must be filed. To bring a civil lawsuit the stable has to hire an attorney and engage in what is

often an expensive drawn-out legal proceeding. Following completion of the lawsuit, the

court can issue a judgment authorizing the sale of the horse. However, during the

foreclosure process, the stable has to continue to board and pay all of the expenses on the

horse. Additionally a judicial order authorizing the sale of the horse is only valuable if the

horse has value itself. In today s market, with declining horse prices, the sale of the horse

may not even cover the board due and expenses the stable undertook to foreclose on the

    lien. Source: www.blueribbonlaw.com/_riding_magazine_2009-0

    Types of ArticlesSource: http://gemini.lib.purdue.edu/core/files/typesofinfo1a.html

Avast majority of scholarly works are published in the form of articles and are publishedin sources broadly referred to as periodicals. The focus of your research will determine whattype of periodical and article you will use. The most common types are found in journals, magazines, trade publications, and newspapers.

Journals typically have scholarly or technical articles. Because they disseminate knowledgeconcerning a specific discipline, these articles are written for students, researchers, and

scholars. These articles will use the jargon of the discipline, cite sources of related research, and focus on experimentation, theories, and original research.

Magazinesare directed toward the general public so the articles are shorter and use morestraightforward language. Because they are designed to entertain or provide generalinformation to a wide audience, most articles rarely provide footnotes or directly cite sources

    of information.

Trade Publications: Articles are written for and about professionals in a specific field orprofession. These articles help professionals in the field stay up-to-date on newdevelopments, movers & shakers in the industry, and upcoming trends.

Newspapers: The focus of these articles is to report the facts of an event. The purpose is tokeep people up-to-date on hot issues and topics. Because these articles need to be readableby a large population of people, the language is very straightforward and without technicaljargon.

GUIDELINES TO WRITE A JOURNAL ARTICLE

    Writing a journal article

    Structure: the paper

o matter what type of paper you write, it needs to have a clear thread through it, and sectionsneed to clearly link. One of the challenges is that writing is linear it has a start point and anend point. By contrast, much academic content is complex more like a website, where things

are related in many different directions. The challenge of writing is to turn the multi-facetted nature ofthe content (where everything is related and linked to everything else, like the internet) into a simple,

    one-directional argument.

Some general principles hold. At the most general level, its a good idea to start your paper broad, havespecific aims at the end of your introduction, and then have a detailed meaty part in the middle.Towards the end, you need to get back to the big picture, preferably the same context that you startedwith. The other general principle is that you must not assume background knowledge beyond theobvious in your discipline. In other words, your chain of argument must not leave out steps that areactually important for the reader. Ask yourself how you would need to explain the general gist of yourpaper to your friend who studies a different discipline, or to your aunt. A good structure tends to makesense even to uninformed people. If they dont get the basic structure youre proposing, its likely thatyou have left out important steps in your logic.

I distinguish between a few different types of papers. Standard empirical papers tend to follow a

standard structure: introduction, methods, results, discussion, conclusion, acknowledgements, andreferences. Sub-headings are common (and useful) within methods and discussion, in particular, butsometimes also in the results section.

Essay papersare fundamentally different. They have no set rules, which make it even more importantthat they follow a logical and clearly understandable thread. Often, its a good idea to outline what thisthread is specifically at the end of the Introduction. Also, even though its an essay, sub-headings canbe immensely useful. Check your subheadings if, without any further information, they tell a logicalstory, youve probably worked out a useful structure.

Review papersare different again. Again, there is a lot of flexibility for how exactly those are prepared, and it depends a lot on which journal youre writing for. Its worth noting that in ecology andconservation science, journals are increasingly keen on quantitative reviews or meta-analyses (astatistical approach to extract patterns out of multiple case studies).

No matter which kind of paper you write, headings are critically important. Typically, you will want touse 2-3 heading levels. You need to clearly differentiate these in style, so that its easy for readers to seewhat youre doing. E.g. use a bold 15 point font for main headings, a bold 13 point font forsubheadings, and italics 12 point font sub-sub-headings.Its a good idea to match the journal style.
