INTRODUCTION:An invincible, dynamic and blissful life realizing

“simultaneous individual liberation and universalwelfare” is SUPERLIVING and it is our eternal right, privilege and also a golden opportunity!

Let us understand how Total StressManagement [TSM] can help us to achieveSUPERLIVING!

Stress is an interaction between any livingorganism and the environment. Thus, sensory stimulation[perception], homeostatic change [feelings] andresponses [behavior] together constitute stress and theemerging consciousness that refines the perceptions, feelings and responses in implicit manner in every livingbeing and explicit manner in human beings is TotalStress Management [TSM].

Hence stress and TSM are present at all the timesin every living being! Most of the times, they aresubconscious and are present not only during wakefulstate , but even during unconscious state, sleep, dreamsand even in an embryo. This is why most of us are noteven aware of them and do not care for conscious studyof stress and TSM!

Actually most of us are busy in excellent effortsto improve individual and social life in our respectiveareas of specialization and our efforts constitute TSMbut usually without conscious and holistic study, awareness and practice of stress and TSM [here afterreferred to as only TSM]. Hence even without TSMsometimes there are successes and happiness orfailures and tragedies. In cases of successes we call

(3)

the stress as good stress or eustress and in casesof failures we term the stress as bad stress ordistress! However it must be remembered that whateustress is for one person can be distress for anotherdepending on the individual’s capacity to managethe stress.

However the specialty of TSM is that it enablesus to not merely to achieve trivial and ephemeralpersonal successes but realize individual liberationand universal welfare.

TSM is like watering the roots of the life tree andis a process of its growth, blossoming and fruition. TSMenables us to evolve our perspective, observation, analyzing, synthesizing, questioning, contemplating, understanding, hypothesizing, memorizing etc. viz.perception, nervous, endocrine and metabolicchanges taking place leading to ideas, plans, strength, freedom, pleasure, love, patience etc viz. feelings andphysical, instinctual, emotional and intellectual actionsi.e. behavior in our private, professional and publiclife. TSM thus enables us to orient ourselves and ourefforts in every field towards realizing simultaneousindividual liberation and universal welfare and bringabout multiplication of our efficacy and fulfillment.

Thus through TSM we begin to real izeSUPERLIVING! TSM is the way and SUPERLIVINGis the destination! But these are not water tightcompartments! The ecstasy in SUPERLIVING isdynamic and the dynamic process of TSM isecstatic!

(4)

Page 6: Superliving Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar

The true nature of SUPERLIVING and TSMis beyond articulation. But I have humbly sharedmy views and experiences, in this small book. Theseviews and experiences are not absolute truth, butthey are useful in realizing SUPERLIVING.

If you kindly share your frank views, opinions, criticism, suggestions and experiences about TSMand SUPERLIVING, then they would be honored, appreciated and appropriately responded to.

Let us now find out some of the importanteffects of stress on us as the individuals and associety. The complete list of effects of stress istoo long and hence not described. But eventhough the ef fects, descr ibed, are a lsohorrifying, let us not be afraid of them In stead, let us go ahead with determinat ion andconfidence to understand and conquer themindividually and collectively!

(5)

EFFECTS OF STRESS ON LIFE

The effects of stress in individual life arewide spread affecting every aspect of life. Theymanifest in society in the form of wars, terrorism, fanaticism, exploitation, addictions, crimes, eco-destruction etc., which in turn inflict the individuallife! Some effects of stress on different aspects ofindividual life, which we will conquer, are:

Effects on personal life:Mind: When the effects are subconscious there

may be no symptoms. But when consciously perceived, they include tension, anxiety, worry, despair, dejection, irritability, apathy, suffocation, lack of confidence, listlessness, sadness, frustration, unpleasant dreams, lackof sleep, suicidal tendencies etc.. Sometimes abnormalfear of death and diseases like cancer may be present andat other instances, there may be abnormal fear of even atrifle, or even unknown. Sometimes there may be habitssuch as nail biting, blinking and facial muscular twitching.

Intelligence: Even an otherwise intelligentperson shows forgetfulness, confusion, indecision, difficulty in learning, and decline in other intellectualfaculties.

Education and career: Glorification of pettysuccess leads to neurotic obsession about eitheracademic success or certain specific careers. Theacademically “not so good” children get shattered due topressure of peers and parents, if they fail to pursue aparticular career.

(6)

Page 7: Superliving Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar

Performance: There is gross reduction inperformance. This is due to lack of interest andinitiative leading to indifference, irresponsibility, inefficiency, absenteeism, etc.

Matrimony: The married life is characterizedby harassment or violence towards the spouse. It maybe due to inadequate dowry, inadequate sexualsatisfaction and mismatching in other respects. Stressmay ref lect into mutual distrust, promiscuity, separation, divorce, and even suicide, homicide ormurder.

Family: Every kind of disgruntlement is presentin the family. This reflects as unhygienic dirtiness andindiscipline in the housekeeping. We notice indolence, lack of communication and dialogue, apathy, inertia, intolerance, quarrels and degeneration in everyrespect.

Usually there is negligence of the noble parentalinstinct causing anxiety neurosis, depression, restlessness and even breast abscesses andmalignancies due to avoidance of breast feeding. Illhealth results in babies because of lack of physicalintimacy, contact and breastfeeding. As the childrengrow, they undergo stress of slogging for lucrative career, name and success with no concern whatsoever, for theirinner fulfillment, growth and satisfaction.

Social Behavior: The stress manifests in socialbehavior as lying, stealing, shouting, betraying, indecency, dishonesty, cheating, corruption, spoiling ofpublic places and other crimes.

(7)

Effects on Body:-Appearance: Facial expressions change even

if the individual is not aware of the physiology of stressand any particular stressors. Thus helplessness, listlessness, misery, anguish, anxiety, indifference, insecurity, irritability may be noticed in overallappearance.

Nervous system: Sensory disturbances mayinclude pains and aches, itching, tingling, numbnessand motor disturbances may include, lethargy, incoordination, defects in speech, and tremors andsymptoms related to emotions and intelligence mentionedearlier.

Cardiovascular system: Coronary ArteryDisease [CAD], high blood pressure, bleeding in brain, abnormalities of rhythm of the pumping of heart associatedwith giddiness, disturbing awareness of increase inheart rate and/or force of pumping, restlessness andparalysis can result due to stress.

Respiratory system: Asthma, increasedsusceptibility to respiratory infections, dry cough, sneezing, hiccups and even breathlessness may bepresent.

Muscles and joints: Weakness of muscles iscommon. Usually there is tension headache due totense muscles. Backache is very common and usuallydue to defective posture, which in turn, is due to stress!

(8)

Page 8: Superliving Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar

Drooping shoulders, hump on back, or other abnormality, causes or aggravates musculoskeletal and connectivetissue disorders and compression of nerves causing pain. These conditions in turn further aggravate the stress.

Cervical, thoracic and lumbar spondylosis ispresent causing various degrees of pains and achesin the related regions. There may be spasm usuallyreferred to as catch. Inflammation of joints betweenribs and sternum sometimes associated with pain inchest can cause undue fear. There is inflammation ofthe joints between temporal bone and mandible[Temporal means related to time. The hair in this regiongray first! Mandible means to chew.]. This can causelocked jaw or pain during opening and closing of thejaw. There can be bruxism, which means, biting of teethduring sleep causing sharp edges and injury to mouthand tongue.

Connective tissue: Rheumatoid arthritis[autoimmune disease in which body producesantibodies against proteins of its own causing damageto tissues and organs], tendonitis [Inflammation of thetapering ends of muscles which fuse with bone],inflammation of cartilage or ligament [tough connectivetissue which usually covers and protects the joint], painfulmuscle or ligament tear called sprain may be present

Endocrine system: All the endocrine glands areadversely affected. Hence disturbances of carbohydrate, fat, protein, mineral, water, vitamins and other food and

(9)

drug ingredients’ metabolism, disturbances of hunger, thirst, weight gain and loss, bone strength, growth, pigmentation or depigmentation, muscle function, sexualfunction, may be subclinical or overtly clinical such asdiabetes mellitus.

Reproduction and Sexuality: lack of erectionof penis and hence inability to perform intercourse, release of semen before reaching height or climax ofsexual pleasure, absence of expulsion of semen duringsexual intercourse, fear or aversion towards sex, lackof sexual attraction or desire, painful intercourse, absence of menstrual cycle in absence of pregnancyor any organic lesion, reduction in milk secretion aresome of the effects of stress on reproductive system.

Digestive system: Effects of stress can directlyalter the acid and other secretions in the digestive tract.Stress can also alter the motility of the digestive tract. Henceit can cause colic, belching, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite, hyperacidity, ulcer, irritable bowelsyndrome, ulcerative colitis, diarrhea, constipation and soon.

Genital-Urinary system: Nightt ime bedwetting, lack of control over the act of micturitionresulting in passing of urine in response to coughing, sneezing, psychological retention of urine [inability topass urine due presence of other people around] andsusceptibility to infections are some of the effects ofstress.

(10)

Page 9: Superliving Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar

Immune system: Dysfunction of immune[defense] system results into increased susceptibilityto infections [e.g. acquired immune deficiency syndrome[AIDS]. Other abnormalities of immune system resultinto bronchial asthma, autoimmune diseases or cancer.

Skin and mucous membranes: Dryness, lackof elasticity, lack of luster are common. There is usuallypresence of acne, pimples, scabies, eczema, wrinkles, and dark circles around the eyes. Psoriasis [a skindisease of many varieties, characterized by the formationof scaly red patches on extensor surfaces of the body],lichen planus [an inflammatory skin disease with wideflat papules, often very persistent and occurring incircumscribed patches], chronic itching skin eruption dueto nervous disease and sweating of palms and soles areknown to be due to stress.

Hair: Premature graying, brittleness, fragility ofhair, dandruff, seborrhea [Excessive oily secretion bysebaceous glands that causes formation of white oryellowish greasy scales or cheesy plugs on body andis associated with itching] and baldness may becaused by stress.

Eyes: Strain, redness of eyes, pain in eyes, watering, burning and some times as in case ofdiabetics complications such as retinopathy, cataractcan be seen.

Ears: Repeated infections, vertigo, ringing in

(11)

the ears, gradual deafness and sometimes disturbinghypersensitivity to sounds can be observed.

Nose: Scaling, running of nose, sneezes, choking, infections and atrophic lesions with dirtysmell are some effects of stress on nose.

Mouth: Ulcers, increased salivation, drying, infections of gums, teeth, salivary glands and otherparts in and around mouth and complaints such aspain, difficulty in biting, chewing, swallowing, badbreath etc. are present.

In short, the stress adversely affects allaspects of life! But we will conquer the stress byunderstanding the mechanism by which the stresscauses all such effects!

(12)

Page 10: Superliving Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar

MECHANISM OF STRESSVarious stressors are basically stimuli and

hence they stimulate various internal and externalneural receptors and/or molecular receptors. Thereceptors after being stimulated produce changeseither in the nervous system and/or in the blood. Whenthey enter nervous system, they change the secretionof a variety of neurotransmitters, which are chemicalsubstances acting on the various parts of brain. Thisthen is followed by autonomic nervous responsesuch as increase in heart rate, endocrine responsewhich may include increase or decrease in secretionof a particular hormone or hormones, or a metabolicresponse, which may be an increase in release ofglucose from the liver into the blood. .

The four main mechanisms of stress are:

a) Effect of various stressors on the brain leadsto secretion of various neurotransmitters, which arereleased into a small centrally and ventrally locatedfunnel like part of brain called hypothalamus. Thehypothalamus in turn secretes hormones, which arecarried to the pituitary gland which is underneath thehypothalamus. The pituitary in turn secretes hormoneswhich are released in the blood and reach to influencevarious endocrine glands.

Adrenal gland located on the top of the kidneys, has the outer cortex and the inner medulla. Adrenal cortexsecretes amongst other hormones, cortisol, which ismainly responsible for various bad effects of stress.

(13)

b) Stressors can act on the pineal gland whichis conical and located in central ventral region of brain, superiorly. Because of stressors the proportion, thequantity and the type of secretions change and causeseveral ill effects on body.

c) Stressors can be bacteria, products of tissueinjury, antigens, extraneous chemicals etc. in theblood. All these act on the different types of whiteblood cells [WBC], which in turn produce severalsubstances which influence the hypothalamus andlead to effects of stress.

d) In as much as the stressors can cause effecton the hypothalamus, the secretions of hypothalamuscan produce the effects of stress by direct action onvarious tissues.

Through understanding the last three chapters wehave empowered ourselves to comprehend and managethe root causes of stress! Let us therefore, now enter thephase of Total Stress Management [TSM] and realizeSUPERLIVING with victorious spirit!

(14)

Page 11: Superliving Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar

CAUSES, TSM AND SUPERLIVING

Just as optimum hunger and appetite are essentialfor proper digestion of food, genuine desire, promptnessand interest in TSM are crucial for realizing SUPERLIVING!This chapter will empower us for victory in the same!

Let us start the TSM, which for simplicity isdescribed in conformity with the causes of the stress i.e.

stressors.

Physical, Chemical and Biological stressors:

These include decreasing greenery, expandingasphalt, basalt, cement, granite and concrete jungles, gravitational and other accelerations, vibrations, pressure, temperature, radiations, glittering/flickering and shininglights, strange and rapidly mixing television and otherpicture frames, aggressive and loud advertising on TVand radio, electrical/electrostatic strong fields andradiations in computer, TV and other gadgets, hydrogen, sodium, chloride, potassium, pollution due to vehicles, mills, factories, cancer producing chemicals and excretacompounded by lack of open space, and organisms suchas viruses, bacteria, fungi, bedbugs, houseflies, mosquitoes, cockroaches and other microbes and pests.

It is obvious that these stressors can cause bodily, instinctual, emotional and intellectual stress, dependingupon the evolution of the organism or individual.

Thus high ambient temperature causes bodilydiscomfort, excess exposure to radiations can causesterility, chemical pollution can disturb our mind and

(15)

exposure to biological stressors can disturb ourintellectual activities.

Management :

In as much as physical, chemical and biologicalstressors affect body, instincts, emotions and intelligence, the condition of the body, instincts, emotions and intelligenceinfluences the management of physical, chemical andbiological stressors. Hence everything to manageinstinctual, emotional and intellectual stress as describedsubsequently is essential in the management of thephysical, chemical and biological stressors.

The most important strategy important inmanagement of all the stressors is maintaining ourobjective blissful consciousness unperturbed, throughNamasmaran and hence will be emphasized repeatedly.

At individual level, understanding the differentinfluences of physical, chemical and biological stressorson us is important and very useful. It leads to, concernand improvement in our personal and social behavior. Thus minimal use of electronic gadgets, vehicles etccan reduce some sources of the stressors!

In addition, it is important to protect ourselvese.g. by use of mosquito coils! Most of us know anduse such protective measures to save us from thevarious pollutants.

But individual efforts are not sufficient. Physical, chemical and biological stressors pose a mammothproblem. For significant success in their managementdedicated involvement from topmost policy makers to

(16)

Page 12: Superliving Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar

workers in terms of environment friendly policies andtheir implementation at individual, institutional andgovernment levels is essential.

Thus improvement in the efficiency of pubictransport, restriction on the production of smallvehicles, domestic and public cultivation of medicinaland other useful plants and trees, cleanliness of publictoilets and public places, and decongestion of citiesthrough appropriate policies are some of the importantsteps in the management of physical, chemical andbiological stressors.

All of us in government, NGOs, schools, colleges, universities, other institutions and print andelectronic media, including experts must get involvedin evolving the government policies and programs tomanage these stressors and popularize them formaximum participation and efficient implementation.

Bodily Stressors:

These stressors are the ones which usuallyarise from the body in the form of disease, deficiency, deformity, disability, handicap, aging, pain and othernoxious stimulation of the body. Evaluation of anindividual on the basis of height, complexion, bodyproportion, shape and income lead to social stigmaswhich lead to apprehension and resistance. Thismakes these stressors even graver!

These stressors can also cause instinctual, emotional and intellectual stress. For example certainhandicaps may cause sexual stress, certain diseases

(17)

may lead to depression, and certain deformities maylead to difficulty in learning.

Management :

Well being of body through management ofbodily stressors is one of the important means of risingin consciousness and hence helps us in managing allother stressors more efficiently. In turn, managementof instinctual, emotional, and intellectual stressors asdescribed later, helps us manage the bodily stressorsbetter.

Hence we should practice Namasmaran toovercome the bodily stressors dragging us down fromour objective blissful consciousness.

Practice of Anulom-vilom, Kapalbhati,Bhramari, Ujjayee and Omkar recitation at least halfan hour a day boosts the zeal of practice and intensity ofinvolvement in Namasmaran!

Menstrual cycle, pregnancy, wounds, travelingand many other situations in day to day life may not permitpractice of breathing techniques, but we should not getdisheartened. The situations will always be in our strideso far as we adhere to Namasmaran.

Namasmaran and breathing techniques help usin overcoming bodily stressors such as deficiency, disease, deformity, handicap and even aging. This isbecause Namasmaran and breathing techniques helpus overcome apprehension and resistance which makethe stressors grave. Namasmaran and breathingtechniques help us rise above the social stigma

(18)

Page 13: Superliving Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar

attached to the bodily stressors. This stigma isresponsible for apprehension and resistance.Namasmaran and breathing techniques help usovercome the suffocating social stigma and thesuperficial and petty values exaggerating theimportance of bodily attributes such as height, shape, muscle contours etc. and the productive or earningcapacity!

Namasmaran and breathing techniques enableus to realize that it is our perspective, our thinking, our feelings for the welfare of the others that decidethe value of our existence and not the bodily capacityor income. This way we learn not to lose the selfesteem and not let ourselves down because ofphysical looks, deformity and incapacitat ion. Moreover, we learn not to force ourselves to earnsome income only to justify our existence. We learnto ride over the misery caused by the bodily stressorsand take victorious steps to manage them efficiently.

Rubbing of palate, gums, undersurface of tongueand teeth involves activation of huge brain areasassociated with these regions. Therefore it is an importantway of arousing our consciousness when we get up inmorning. It causes increase in blood supply and washingaway of waste products from sinuses, gums, tongue, salivary glands, and other oral regions, thus impartinghealth.

Bath is an opportunity to kindle our consciousnessand open new horizons of life. It is associated with manyother advantages! Bath washes away the darkness andlethargy. It washes away the lassitude and melancholy

(19)

from mind and rejuvenates the body. Bath stimulatesthe sensory receptors all over body and also improvesblood circulation to all the parts of body. Besides, itcleans the sweat and sebum pores in skin and improvesthe health of skin. There is no need to use soap as amatter of habit or compulsion, unless the body is too oilyor sweaty.

Cold bath in morning is refreshing. Warm bath inevening alleviates soreness of tired muscles, joints, eyesand in general all the systems. It is relaxing and helps ingetting quick and sound sleep.

Massage has an inseparable element ofemotional warmth and soothing effect. Different typesof massage improve blood circulation in almost every nookand corner of body and promote health of skin, hair, neuromuscular system, musculoskeletal system andeyes. Massage can be useful in many disordersincluding paralysis. Foot massage can promote thefoot health and prevent or treat callosities, corns, scaling, fungal infections, bruises resulting from excessive exposureto water, cold, heat, dust, ill fitting or synthetic shoes, otherallergens and standing or walking for long time. Footmassage ensures flexibility of small joints and adequatecirculation and micro-circulation in the feet. This isespecially useful in diabetics who are prone to decreasein blood supply and its bad effects on feet.

Correction of posture is useful in treatment ofbackache, tension headache, low back ache, disturbedmood because mood correction can alleviate or heal thepain! Therefore erect posture is preferred wheneverpossible. Moreover we should sit with our back and loin

(20)

Page 14: Superliving Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar

touching the back of the seat. This reduces undue strainon back and reduces the chances of backache.

Physical exercise is basically meant for nurturingand channelizing the vital force to culminate into fearlessand committed expression of our globally beneficialperspective and feelings. Hence it is the primary or mainobjective of physical exercise useful in management ofemotional and intellectual stressors.

Advantages of physical exercise in terms of looks, shape of body, strength and other physical attributes areuseful and welcome but are secondary. Thisunderstanding is important to avoid disastrously lopsidedand obsessive physical exercise merely for somephysical or other trivial objectives or gains.

We should choose the type of exercise dependingon whether we are old, young, students, athletes, clerks, pregnant, nursing mothers, and school girls and so on.Usually it is good to remember that apart from the primaryobjective of exercise stated above, the secondaryobjectives such as strength, flexibility; endurance, balance of body, coordination, speed, shape of body etcmay be paid due attention to, while choosing the type ofexercise. Another point to remember is that there shouldnever be excess in exercise and to avoid monotony, exercise should be changed from, morning to evening, from day to day or from time to time.

Traditional Indian exercises such as yogasanas, danda, baithaka, suryanamaskar, chakradanda, wrestling, kallaripayyat, walking, climbing outdoor sportsand other exercises such as karate, boxing, judo, aikido

(21)

can be learned from an expert and practiced accordingto availability and feasibility.

The simplest way of exercise is to walk andwherever feasible, avoid lift and climb stairs. Theseexercises are eco-friendly and inexpensive.

Moderate physical activity releases betaendorphin, up-regulates insulin receptors useful inregulation of blood sugar and improves the performance.

Food and drinks inf luence emotional, intellectual, instinctual and physical progress and aredescribed in brief with reference to instinctualstressors.

All said and done bodily stressors are not easyto manage merely at individual level. Hence everyonefrom top policy makers to the workers must be involvedfor their efficient management.

One of the most important policy decisions is thatconceiving and implementing Holistic health andHolistic Medicine.

Holistic health is nothing else but theSUPPERLIVING i.e. perspective of universal welfare, intellectual quest and understanding of the solutions, happiness and enthusiasm in prioritization andassertion of these solutions and physical strengthand capacity for such assertion. Obviously policies, planning and their implementation in every field topromote Holistic health are most essential.

Holistic Medicine is the study, practice andresearch to explore and employ remedies in different

(22)

Page 15: Superliving Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar

systems of medicine and from every possible source toachieve Holistic health.

It should be clear here how policy makers, decision makers, planners, administrators, experts andfield workers from all the different fields can and oughtto contribute to Holistic Medicine and Holistic Health. Thus availability of playgrounds, swimming pools, hathyoga centers, dance schools, schools of martial arts, health promoting food and drinks, gardens of medicinalplants and knowledge traditional and alternativeremedies from all over the world to all of us, our children, students, patients, doctors and so on would contributeto preventing and overcoming bodily stressors.

Apart from actually conquering bodily stressors, implementation of these policies would nurture the selfesteem of everyone related and involved in managementof bodily stressors. This would make the misleading, aggressive campaigns of health products, threateningadvertisements of health/life/accident insurances, frightening description of diseases, unnecessarypromotional campaigns increasing already prohibitivecosts of medical care, redundant, useless andunviable.

Instinctual Stressors :

Due to development of nervous and endocrinesystem there is development of instincts and theirinadequate fulfillment causes stress.

Instinctual stressors can cause bodily stress, emotional stress and intellectual stress also. Thus painful

(23)

intercourse causes physical pain, it upsets the mind and itleads to violent thoughts.

Management :

The management of instinctual stressors helps usevolve instincts into sublime feelings and thoughts. It helpslive in a more wholesome and happier manner. In turnmanagement of all other stressors helps us in suchculmination of our instincts into ecstatic living.

Survival: Fear of predator or threat to survival inthe form of murders, mass killings, and terrorism causesstress.

TSM endows new dimension to our life.Biological survival instinct gets evolved into nobleadventure and we evolve into fearless invincibleconquerors. We learn that our bodies and individualexistences are like windows. It is not us but the Sun,is responsible for the light rays passing through us. Ifwe realize that light i.e. everything manifesting throughus shall continue eternally even if our bodies-thewindows perish, then we can overcome the fear ofdeath of our bodies.

To reinforce this understanding and experienceits validity we should do namasmaran with sense ofgratitude at least immediately after we get up from sleep. This is to remind us our connection with cosmicconsciousness and thereby avoid any petty feelingsrushing surreptitiously in our mind without our awareness.

To overcome fear breathing techniques, whichstrengthen our nerves have to be practiced.

(24)

Page 16: Superliving Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar

In modern days, survival also means ability toearn our livelihood. Hence it is important to learn askill, technique, art, business etc., as an ethical meansof decent income and social contribution. We shouldmake our children self sufficient from this point of view.

However mere individual efforts are not enough. There must be inclusion of productive and earningdomain in education to curb the roots of threat tosurvival, germinating from unproductive educationresulting in parasitic l iterates emerging asunemployed or unsatisfactorily employedcriminals or mental wrecks.

Hunger: Lack of food, change in the type offood, change in the timing of food cause stress.

Though, this biological instinct is basically meantfor survival in animals, there much more to it in us. Thuswe have freedom to regulate and fulfill it for the goal ofSUPERLIVING. Hence, the quantity, quality and type offood should be chosen on the basis of its propertiesconducive to broadening of mind, alertness, buoyancy, focus, composure, determination, decisiveness, courage, and love and not .on the basis of mere taste, flavor, shape, texture, color and deceptive goals such as ideal bodyproportion, skin complexion and heroic success ineverything!

The nature of place, maker, provider, server andthe actual food all are important in this. Moreover, ourmental and physical states are also important. Also, affectionate sharing of food with others makes adifference.

(25)

Hence eating together with prayerful and gratefulattitude with due consideration to all above is regarded asyajna i.e. an act of a truly highest merit, that reunite us withour objective blissful consciousness.

Preferably, we should eat home food and avoidexcessive consumption of any one type of food. Weshould have a variety in our staple diet. Thus we shouldhave unpolished wheat, corn, patni, nachani, bajara, jawar, cow milk, green leafy vegetables, salads, seasonalfruits, sprouted beans e.g. fenugreek, alfalfa and bittergourd, [Karela], neem [Kadulimb], bel, Amala, ginger,Pudina, A sourish variety of mangosteen called Kokamor Bhirand, basil [Tulas], Jamun [Jambhul] and oilssuch as sesame, groundnut, palm, coconut, mustard andsunflower and rock salt.

Research, training, practice and marketing ofIndian cuisine and culinary practices and the Ayurvedicprinciples involved in them are required for excellentresults in TSM.

Thirst: Lack or difficulty in getting safe drinkingwater produces stress. Presently, we find that mostpeople can not get drinking water in spite of itsavailability as it is sold for prohibitive costs. This cannot only cause stress but even lead to violent reactions.

Water is called JEEVAN i.e. life! We should drinkplenty of warm water [that stimulates bowel motion also],immediately after we get up in the morning as a routine. This preempts the subclinical effects of subclinicaldehydration caused by stress. Water not only quenchesthe thirst, but provides the medium for the variety of chemical

(26)

Page 17: Superliving Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar

reactions in body. It catalyzes the rise of consciousnessand alertness. Other beneficial drinks are juice of freshfruits, butter milk, coconut water, etc.

It has to be noted that consumption of ice cold waterand drinks predisposes us to common cold and relatedailments.

Hence the rulers must ensure that clean and puredrinking water is freely available to every one everywhereand fresh fruit juice production and availability ispromoted. Further, the policy to use electric water coolersin place of earthen pots should be done away thus savingelectricity and the potters.

It is claimed that eating of four leaves ofNeem and four leaves of Tulsi everyday can reducethe infective, infectious and many other diseasesby 50 %. Hence at least to verify this, these leavesand all the health foods and drinks described hereand elsewhere should be made available tostudents, teachers, patients, doctors and everyone of us as a matter of policy.

Excretory urge: Inability, inconvenience, delay, discomfort and diseases related to defecation andurination act as stressors. Having to answer the call ofnature on the sea face, railway lines and by the side ofroads or anywhere in the open due to lack of toilets is amajor stressor for one and all.

Stress and resulting weirdness lead to chaoticindulgence in eating and drinking and negligence towardsthe precious treasure of life, leading to abnormalities ofurination and defecation amongst many others.

(27)

In general, consumption of green leafy vegetables, fresh fruits, sprouted beans and unpolished food grainsand drinking of plenty of water are crucial to prevent ortreat problems related to defecation and urination.

Proper food/agricultural policies promotingproduction and affordable availabil i ty of freshvegetables, fruits, fruits juices and fiber are requiredfor mass management of ailments like defecation.

But the problem of unavailability of toilets can beovercome mainly by major policy decisions with respectto rural development and thereby reduction in theindividuals living, bathing, spitting, urinating anddefecating in cities.

Reproductive instinct: Deprivation of sexualmate is obviously stressful. But sexual impotence, steri l i ty, other primary or secondary sexualabnormalities and psychosexual problems also causestress.

Overexposure to glorified display of brazen andcrude sexuality, lack of enough privacy due to smallhouses and crowding, fear of diseases like AIDS, fearof defamation and/or breach of faith aggravate suchstress.

Education of mere anatomy and physiology of sexglands, genitals, secondary and other sexualcharacteristics of males and females can, in factexacerbate the sexual craving and its dissatisfaction andadd to the stress.

This can be overcome by appreciating and teaching

(28)

Page 18: Superliving Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar

noble aspects of parenthood, subtlety of family relations, value of social commitments, role of economic conditions, importance of emotional solace, necessity of mutualrespect, delicate balance of individual aspirations and aboveall the sublime marital relationship peculiar to and possiblefor human beings, inseparably associated with sex. Thisappreciation must be reflected in laws, rules, regulations, conventions, literature, art and electronic and print mediaand our day to day transactions so that the forces of carnalityand mercenary sexuality destroying our happiness insideand outside us can be culminated into wholesome andprofound relations and ever enriching fulfillment.

Parental care: Separating the newborn from theparents produces stress in children and parents. This hasbecome common today. Apart from the time crunchand other job related problems, we tend to get carriedaway by the ambience of material glamour and glitterand tend to neglect our parental instinct, which isactually a source of moment to moment rejuvenation!

We seem to get dragged behind the illusive andpleasures to such an extent that our own children beginto appear to us as villains spoiling our “pleasure”. Weand our children gradually begin to develop distance, mutual indifference, despise and hatred.

Hence we have to re-explore our love and care forour children by overcoming misguided compulsions ofindividualistic pursuits and misdirected indulgence in socalled physical pleasures, which are actually abysmaland destroy our instinctual health and happiness!

One of the important aspects of parental care is

(29)

breast feeding. We must dispel the superstition that bottlefeeding is superior to breast feeding. The mothers oughtto practice breast feeding for their own as well as their child’stotal health.

Breast feeding is also avoided due to anxiety aboutlosing figure and also shyness and shame about breasts. This is understandable in view of the ambiencebrainwashing us to concede breasts as showpieces meantfor exhibiting, titillating, seducing, marketing on the one handand liabilities to hidden in shame or fear on the other. Breastsare noble parts of human body, involved in nurturing thenew born and perpetuating the civilization. Breasts and forthat matter, all the male and female sexual characteristicsand the sexual attraction between them reflect an eternal, divine and romantic poetry of nature. They do NOT hinttowards crass and exploitative phenomenon between twosexes. This understanding amongst all of us is required forenjoying dignified romantic sexual relationship, responsibleand fulfilling parenthood and health promoting and stressrelieving practice of breastfeeding.

Having said this, it is always advisable that the tenderand caring act of breast feeding must have safe and privateplace for peaceful, serene and satisfactory practice of breastfeeding. Hence baby care centers at every working placeand sufficient time for nursing and breastfeeding thebabies during duty hours are essential for overcomingmaternal instinctual stress!

Movement: Lack of movement causeshypokinetic stress. Abnormally rapid movementproduces hyperkinetic stress.

(30)

Page 19: Superliving Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar

Simple measures like walking or stroll and climbing atworking places can reduce hypokinetic stress.

Hypokinetic stress due to lack of movement canbe reduced by issuing directives/orders to schools, colleges, hospitals, banks etc to promote movement.Improvement in the travel and tourism could make thetrekking, hiking, roving etc. easier for a common manslogging in cities-the suffocating prisons. Constructionof swimming pools, play grounds and gardens couldpromote locomotion, reduce stress and improve workoutput. In addition, there should be five days workingweek [where it is not as yet] so that the employed peoplecan go for a weekly outing.

Habitat: Change in a particular environment towhich we are conditioned, leads to stress.

The over all atmosphere, with which we aredeeply habituated is called habitat. The best way ofaverting stress of alien habitat is self-employment in thevicinity of our native places. But this is not alwayspossible. Hence we can develop new and moreempowering habitat and overcome isolation, lonelinessand stress of alien habitat by participating in a commongoal as is done by many.

Better roads and public transport would help usvisit native places more conveniently and reduce thestress of alien habitat.

Herd tendency: Isolation from herd [group]causes stress. Instinct of herd is present in us in theform of formation of family, relatives, friends and othergroups.

(31)

Many of us feel lonely because the human bondsbetween friends, families, colleagues etc are beingundermined due to competitive spirit, economic profit, professional rivalry, political gains and such individualpetty pursuits bring us loggerheads to one another andboost ruthlessness and enmity for trivial gains.

We need company. In preferred company we feelbuoyant and happy. For such a company [habitat] we shouldlearn to not boast about our petty achiev-ements andbelittle others and also not keep grumbling throughout about our petty grievances as it is stressful toothers. If we learn honoring the sanctity of our bondsand relations, then we can have really pleasantcompany, satisfy herd tendency and surmount thisstress.

Emotional and Intellectual Stressors:

Besides all the stressors mentioned above, more stressors as described below in brief, come intoplay in we human beings, because of furtherdevelopment of nervous and endocrine system and thedevelopment of society! Thus these stressors arisefrom intellectual and emotional world in and aroundus. But they can cause [bodily] pain or incapacitation,[instinctual] sexual impotence, [emotional] bizarremood changes and [intellectual] perversions in thoughtprocess and ideas. Hence management of all theseother stressors is essential and very important inmanagement of emotional and intellectual stressors

Emotional and intellectual stressors essentiallyemerge from superficiality and pettiness, which are

(32)

Page 20: Superliving Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar

deep rooted within us. These generate opposing andconflicting dualities in the form of 1] fear, dreams, hope, expectations etc. about future 2] guilt, pride, arrogance etc.about the past, 3] preferences, likes, pleasures etc. aboutsome things and 4] hatred, jealousy, despise aboutothers. These dualities can create destructive anddevastating conflicts and can tear apart our mind. Thesedualities and conflicts can give rise to intellectualperversions and antisocial plans and conspiracies. Theseconflicts cut us off from the very source of universal power. We get deprived of the fountainhead of life. This can leadto violence towards self or towards the others leading toall sorts of maladies at individual and social level.

If we happen to be in a top decision making, policy making, planning, administrative or otherpowerful position and suffer from these [andphysical, chemical, biological, bodily, instinctual]stressors, then it becomes disastrous and if wemanage these stressors correctly, then it becomesliberating and blissful for ourselves and beneficialto the universe to a far greater extent.

Management :

Namasmaran is the process of return from ournarrow self to our real universal self and according tome, the best way to overcome conflicting anddevastating forces of pettiness and superficiality andreunite ourselves with the source of all happiness, powerand everything in the universe. Remembering, chantingor reciting the name of God, so to say the seed ofuniverse, leads to the ultimate blossoming of ourexistence. Everything else if pursued as ultimate goal

(33)

to relieve stress later turns out to be fleeting and deceptiveillusion in absence of namasmaran.

Namasmaran appears simple and unglamorousand hence even those, who in principle agree with itssupremacy, tend to neglect its practice. Those whopractice Namasmaran and know that they do not getpeace anywhere else, also tend to lose faith due to beingbogged by the pettiness [vacillating subjective intellectualand conceptual framework] and superficiality [holding onto the changing appearances and not the core]. Beingable to practice Namasmaran irrespective of anythingand everything is really the state of being on the topof the world in true sense.

If we are sensitive to personal as well as the socialsuffering then we are stressed more. But it is livelier thanbeing callously calm and indolently quiet. This quality viz.divine restlessness propels us towards TSM andSUPERLIVING. However, it is subjective. Subjectivemeans non absolute or non objective. It is petty andsuperficial as compared to objective or universal reality.Hence if it is coupled with adamancy, then it can causeenormously more destructive stress. ThroughNamasmaran divine restlessness evolves andculminates into the ultimate source of benevolent andcreative state of peace.

Namasmaran and breathing techniques usherin conflict free objective and blissful state from whichspring intellectual, emotional and physical actions leadingto individual and global welfare, which in turn return us tothe blissful state and the Namasmaran and breathingexercises!

(34)

Page 21: Superliving Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar

Teaching and encouraging namasmaran andbreathing exercises in all the places of policy making, law making, religious worships, learning, worship, business, research, production and health care would buttress this.

The emotional and intellectual stressors spanthrough:

Personal life: It is said that we are socialanimals. But in true sense we are always alone andthe company is always fleeting and changing! But aswe do not realize it and depend on it or get evenaddicted to it, its abstinence makes us miserable.

We go on getting enamored and dragged afterpeople, friends, relatives, career, money, glamour, power, hobbies, thoughts, philosophies and so on tocomplete our incompleteness and sense ofinadequacy. In the process we sometimes get excitedand sometimes depressed and get drawn to enteraltered state of consciousness and let loose. We seemto need frank sharing of the euphoria or painfulproblems with informal and intimate company of closefriends! We seem to require intense opening up andreleasing. We appear to need do this with intoxicatingsubstances for greater ease and relaxation! But latertrivial fluctuations in the surrounding circumstancesnecessitate the company and the intoxication! However such companies and such relaxationboomerang and intoxication starts damaging. Thisfrustrates us and makes us helpless. Later, we arenot able to think, discuss, negotiate or fight back thestressors in any way and tend to drown ourselves inintoxication, which hurts permanently leading to

(35)

dependence, disease and debility.

Management of personal stressors involvesrising above our subjectivity or ego. This gives theability to be together even when we are alone!

For this we have to internalize the principle ofhomeostasis, which highlights the invisible bondsbetween every individual and the society!Homeostasis is maintenance of healthy environment forthe cells and the organism. We must also appreciatethat participation of all cells in homeostasis i.e. in thewelfare of the organism, in turn ensures health of everyindividual cell. Let us remember that the organism[society] is healthy only if the cells [individuals] are healthyand vice versa. Every individual [a cell] has to assertand reinforce to ensure health of the society [organism].If a cell [individual] does not function due to disease ordeath, then it is extremely harmful to the organism[society]. This understanding would reinforce ourcommitment to the society and energize us to contribute toit as a part of our TSM and the policies of holistic health, holistic medicine and holistic education etc. would helpus in turn in TSM and SUPERLIVING.

Family: Discord, loneliness, unwantednessamongst family members and morbid dissatisfactiondue to insatiable, individualistic and rabid selfishnesscause stress.

The bitterness, discord, dissatisfaction etc. canbe overcome by involvement in common goals andcommon missions. Such goals and missions bind ustogether, by warm bonds.

(36)

Page 22: Superliving Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar

In the past there were certain customs andtraditions specific to the pedigree, caste, occasions, and auspicious days in different religions. The life waswell scheduled and more or less fixed without anydoubts or controversies. The highest personal aim andambition was to stick to and discharge the dutiesaccording to the religious conformities and theschedules.

This is why family members weren’t in dilemmawith respect to any activity. There were no conflicts ofaims and ideas. Every member shared the enthusiasm, commitment, dedication in the traditional professionand the religious decrees. Hence everyone shared anddivided pain resulting from mishaps and shared andmultiplied happiness arising out of festivity andfulfillment of the commitments. In fact, successfulconformity with the traditions was considered anadorable achievement!

Everyone shared the enthusiasm andexcitement in eager wait for the festivals and ritualsstipulated in the religious guidelines and calendars!

We no more have those traditions and customsin their original and suitable forms to bind our familiestogether. However, we can adopt the liberation ofthe self and welfare of the universe as our goaland mission and rejuvenate the warm bonds. As aresult, all controversies and antagonism woulddissolve and physical health, cleanliness, cooperation, dialogue, discussions, affectionate gestures, aesthetics, sports, exchange of views, and well

(37)

directed orchestrated progress of the family towardsSUPERLIVING would ensue.

The problem of elderly in family is largely duethe prevalence of pettiness in the ambience! If wepractice Namasmaran, breathing techniques andassert us then fear of handicaps and disregard foraging would vanish. Loneliness and sense of rejectiondevelop from seeking and expecting meekly or rejectingarrogantly due to our narrowness! If we engage ourselvesin common goal and mission as stated earlier, we canemanate good will and love and stop arrogant rejectionof our elders as well as overcome our own lonelinessand rejection by others.

Marital relations: Time crunch, distress andinsecurity of working women [wives, mothers, and girlchildren], suspicion by spouse, lack of issue, dowry,support-less-ness of nuclear family, dissatisfaction dueto careerism and increased demands are some of theemotional stressors in marital life.

The objective of marriage is usually identifiedwith contentment of exciting sexual intercourse, safereproduction, successful rearing and luxuriously livingtogether. But this is not the end of it. This contentmentand happiness are neither strong enough norpermanent to resolve conflicts in marital life.

We must therefore never consider marriage asa matter of mere sexual satisfaction, reproductiveachievement, successful rearing and merelyluxuriously living together.

We have to understand that the institution of

(38)

Page 23: Superliving Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar

marriage is not bondage but a liberating bond! Itavails us the opportunity to go beyond our petty egoand achieve collective emancipation! This convictionalone can enable us to imbibe the sublime richnessof sacri f ice, tolerance, forgiveness, service, forbearance in living with our soul-mate [not merespouse]! The horizons of our mind broaden andenable us to conquer our carnality, anger, violence, obsessions, whims, fancies, and other perversionsand thereby realize the most satisfying and unifyingtruth of human life.

It is usual experience that birds with samefeathers f lock together. But marriages breakirrespective of commonality in every kind of mundanepursuit. Hence SUPERLIVNG is the only goal thatcan give us the transcendental happiness in ourmarried life, throughout and for ever.

Social ethos: Social discrimination, oppression, injustice, inequality, caste discrimination, reduction in social cohesiveness, social systems indifferent forms such as dictatorship, socialism, democracy which may actually be pathocracy [rule ofdisease] and such other social factors produce stress.

Many of us grumble about the trouble of the socialstressors. But few of us realize that many times the socialstressors show us a mirror to identify the defects withinus.

We therefore should try and introspect, find outand ride over everything that comes in the way of collectiveemancipation and nurture everything that helps in it.

(39)

This way we would be able to decide the prioritiesand assert the same. Such assertion is the key to theevolution of individual freedom and democracy in everyrespect and their culmination into self realization andglobal welfare.

Cultural ambience: Alienation of the culture, coercive conventions, value crisis also can be stressful. The gravity of the infliction caused by these stressorsdepends on and reflects the mass consciousness andmass consensus.

We have to realize the greatest treasure ofhappiness is not in getting dragged by fleetingtemptations, but in getting involved in the pursuit ofsimultaneous individual liberation and universalwelfare. This way we would simultaneously be able todiscard retrogressive and barbaric cultural practicesand oppose their imposition of on us and consolidateand practice the progressive ones taking us toSUPERLIVING..

Religious bigotry: Fanaticism, politicizationand criminalization of religion and resultant tension, bitterness and riots cause stress.

Religious fanaticism, persecution, strife and riotson the one hand and irreligious doctrines, audaciousdogmas, imposing atheism and inconsiderate rationalityand conflicts generated through religious beliefs on theother, can be overcome if our aim in life is clear. Thesimultaneous liberation of individual and welfare ofthe universe viz. SUPERLIVING is a perspective. It isa vision. It is not a theory or hypothesis. It is NOT our

(40)

Page 24: Superliving Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar

thought. It is our very existence, our consciousness, ouractual being.

Since it is not our instinct, feeling or thought it isnot in the purview of science, art or any language. Henceit is not open to intellectual discussion! But is it irrational? No. It neither rational nor irrational! It is beyondintelligence and it inspires and vitalizes and enlightensthe intelligence, feelings and instincts!

This can be appreciated by a simple example.Rationality is like climbing the steps to reach the divingboard at swimming pool and TSM is like diving andirrationality is like not climbing the steps. Those whoclimb the steps and reach the diving board, but do notdive are bound in their rationality and can not enjoydiving i.e. TSM. Those of us who do not climb up thesteps are irrational and obviously cannot enjoy thediving i.e. TSM.. Thus both mere rationality andirrat ionali ty are inadequate and obstructiverespectively, in TSM. Climbing the steps, reaching thediving board [being rational] and then jumping [gettingfreed from the shackles of one’s own paradigms andsubjective intellectual frames i.e. going beyondrationality] help us to enjoy diving i.e. TSM andswimming peacefully is like SUPERLIVING!

Religious beliefs such as charity also causeconflict and stress.

Let us understand that being callous to the needsof other people obviously hinders our growth as well asthe development of the society. It is the darkness.

The practice of charity is superior and gives us

(41)

and some others satisfaction. It is beginning but not fullbrightness of light. Hence charitable measures such asdonations, subsidy, and reservations are palliative anduseful but they can not destroy the roots [policies, plans, administrative aberrations, laws, rules, conventions etc]of emotional stressors [social suffering]. Hence thoughthey cannot be discarded at once, they can not work onlong term basis as they generate evils like loss of selfrespect, lack of dignity, loss of confidence, lack of initiativeand/or total sense of shameless parasitism! This iswhy most institutions like public hospitals with charityas the basis get degenerated and/or corrupted. Theygradually degenerate and dwindle with respect toquality of health care, cleanliness, new developmentsand research, teaching, f i l l ing vacancies, jobsatisfaction, promotions, incentives and transparencyand cleanliness in administration.

Therefore, we cannot get emotional gratificationfrom mere charity. Social stressors such as child labor, beggary, slum dwelling, pavement dwelling, loss of selfrespect, lack of dignity, diffidence, lack of initiative, shamelessness and parasitism can be effectivelymanaged by study, practice, experience, teaching andspread of TSM including assertion of policies such asthose holistic health, holistic medicine and holisticeducation.

Education: Present education system is oneof the best examples of how a wrong perspective anda wrong policy can give rise to globally disastrous andindividually fatal emotional and intellectual stressors.

Thus the education institutions which do not

(42)

Page 25: Superliving Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar

empower the students, teachers and families and alsothemselves economically, lead to crippling andparasitization of every body concerned, includingthemselves.

This crippling and parasitization lead to a viciouscycle of bribing for permission, bribing for grant, bribingfor land, bribing for other facilities, bribing forregularizing irregularities such as passing requirednumber of students on roll call or else the school hasto be closed, bribing by the outgoing students for jobs, bribing for false caste certificates for certain jobs orcourses, bribing the media for being favorable, bribingthe vigilance officers, bribing for video-shooting or notshooting of the examination, getting bribed forappointment of inefficient teachers, irregularities inpaying salaries, getting illegal donations, bribing forhiding the same, bribing for illegal coaching, makingspecial favors to power brokers, opening moreparasitic schools for spinning more money for morepower, bribing for starting such parasitic power centersand so on!

But this is not al l . Unproductive andunprofessional parasitic education, which keepssucking our funds from government, is the mostimportant cause of child drop outs. The dropouts whodo not get jobs add to the population of cheap childlabor and non-dropouts who continue to get ‘educated’and remain unemployed add to the population of thearrogant criminals or diffident mental wrecks.

Inadequate incentive, due to lack ofproduction and earning render all the concerned

(43)

helpless and miserable or parasitic and pervert. Thisis a major stressor in educational field and inflicts theeconomy of the families of the students, teachers, thenation as well as that of the world! The economicinsecurity and other unfair practices destroy theinterest, initiative and conviction in the teachers leadingto defeat of the purpose of education and triumph ofthe corruption.

Besides, pettiness and superficiality, syllabi andcurriculums favoring rote learning, hypokinetic stress, separation from parents, lack of individual attention, lack of dialogue and discussions, alienation from herdand habitat, lack of hand on experience in handicrafts, ski l ls, creative arts, performing arts, sports, productivity, lead to further unemployment, cut throatcompetitions, adds to the emotional and intellectualstressors.

Many education institutions are exceptions toall what has been written. But we can observe aroundand find out for ourselves the extent of validity of thestatements.

Managing educational stressors is a majorpart of TSM and SUPERLIVING. It is a key tomanaging most of the other stressors. As students,we must remember that education is a goldenopportunity for development of cognitive, affective, psychomotor and productive domain and thusreally lays the seeds of individual liberation anduniversal welfare.

One of the most important ways to ensure this

(44)

Page 26: Superliving Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar

is by asking questions with humility and boldness.Another way is exercising the principle of enlightenedobedience, which involves careful l istening, questioning, discussion, provisional acceptance, experimentation, verification and acceptance orrejection of what ever is taught!. In fact enlightenedobedience is a unique feature of TSM usefulthroughout life. Blind obedience or disobedience, blindacceptance or rejection and blind belief or disbeliefneed to be discarded excepting in circumstances suchas war.

Introduction of cognitive, affective, psychomotor andproductive domain in education is essential for physical, instinctual, emotional and intellectual development and ofstudents and all of us!

Careers: Failures in interviews, failures inadmission to certain careers, inability to compete incompetitive examinations [especially those which areglorified or hyped] act as strong emotional stressors.Very difficult courses, lack of teaching, frequentchanges in syllabus and the pattern of examinationscauses emotional and intellectual stress.

It is important that we understand the real natureof the careers and our actual aptitude and our capacity. This requires penetrating the facades of media hype [andnot creating media hype if we are media personnel] ofthe careers and know the nature of work, the risksinvolved in the career, its good or bad impact on thesociety so that we do not develop unfounded fascination, infatuation, attraction or obsession for any career whichis NOT our real choice.

(45)

Occupational environment: Odd/protractedhours of work, lack of job satisfaction, lack ofappreciat ion, lack of recognition, absence ofaccountability, denial of pay revision, and irregularityin promotions are emotional stressors. Excessiveresponsibilities without commensurate powers, over-demanding deadlines, nepotism, discrimination, corruption, manipulations cause severe emotionalstress and its ill effects. Bad working conditions such aslack of light, fresh air and unavoidable gruelingcommuting every day obviously cause stress.

We have to understand that every job orbusiness [excepting overtly destructive ones] has asocially beneficial dimension. Most of the times weignore or neglect it and hence our job appears to belowly, inconsequential, useless and pit iable.Understanding this fact can enable us to get involvedand extract excitement and thrill in our job or business. This can be achieved through uncondit ionalacceptance, love and respect for our job, colleaguesand also the job environment. This would enable ourmind to discover and solve the problems self imposedobstacles in our progress.

However if we are owners or rulers, then wehave also to real ize that job satisfaction i.e.management of the occupational stress is not possiblemerely with efforts of the employee. It requires cordialrelationship, celebrations, incentives, division of laborbefitting the aptitude, accountability, implementation ofconstructive suggestions, corrective and deterringpunishments with impartiality and above all, a goal of

(46)

Page 27: Superliving Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar

liberation of self and welfare of all, in which theemployee can blossom!

Economic field: The poverty, unemployment, bankruptcy of ways of survival related to dwindlingtraditions, inflation, discrepancy between needs/artificiallycreated demands and the fulfillment, exploitation, scams, frauds, swindling, obstructive rules andregulations, stringent laws, unbearable taxation, redtapism, corruption, business failures are emotional andintellectual stressors in economic field.

We must develop zeal and zest to acquirematerial prosperity with fair means and clear visionand determination to use it as a means of achievingHolistic Health. We must discard the unfounded anderratic asceticism that undermines entrepreneurship, trading, commerce; industry, business and anyjudicious money and power seeking venture. Suchprejudiced value judgment should not deter us frommaking money and foolishly invite poverty andresultant stress.

Advertising is a part of any enterprise. It involvespromoting the production of globally beneficialproducts and services to help the customers in theirselection. As advertisers and as customers we canevaluate the merit and demerit of any advertisementon this basis and enjoy material prosperity.

Corruption is actual ly tr ivial ization orvulgarization of ourselves and everything around. Thusidentification of ourselves with our lower self getsexpressed in perspective, laws, policies, major

(47)

decisions such as wars, regulations, rules, literature, art, skills, media, advertisements and personal andsocial goals and reflect in international and localcrimes. Corruption at all these levels leads to commonpeople getting stressed and strained in several waysand resort to or succumb to small or large economiccrimes generally spoken of as “corruption”! Corruption, although implicitly, is generally held to be required forrichness! This creates an illusion viz. being uncorruptis being stupid and poor! However, resorting toeconomic crimes neither assures nor is essential foreconomic success.

The poverty of our perspective reflects in oureconomic policies and these policies reflect intopoverty and vice versa. Our economic perspective andpolicies have to get emancipated [apart from vestedinterests and slavish submission to vested interests]from their restrictive goals of mere supply of food, shelter and clothes to ‘common’ citizens.

We must envisage every individual with materialabundance so as to have enough time and energy leftfor achieving holistic health and SUPERLIVING.

Unusual circumstances: Socially concernedindividuals have to face jail, underground stay, defamation, political harassment etc as they get involvedin the problems of the world.

TSM empowers us to reach the very core ofdifferent conceptual frameworks, goals, movements, missions, beliefs, conventions, traditions, customs, glitter, enticements

(48)

Page 28: Superliving Dr. Shriniwas Kashalikar

compulsions, perversions including unusualcircumstances and conquer them and help eventhose stressed by stressors of unusualcircumstances and help them to help others!

As it must be clear now, TSM neither involvesmere relaxation techniques, nor does it assure meregrowth of profits. Neither does it involve mereentertaining measures nor does it assure mere loadsof personal benefits! Neither does it involve meredietary measures nor does it guarantee mere physicaladvantages. Neither does it involve mere techniquessuch as patting, strokes, autosuggestions, win-lose,win-win, lose-lose, lose –win idea, pacing, unconditional acceptance, love and respect etc. nordoes it engage in mere utopia of love, peace, nonviolence, compassion, happiness and heaven onearth! Neither it is a charity measure, nor is it amercenary venture.

TSM is the way to SUPERLIVING, which is thedynamic, invincible, and blissful life realizing“simultaneous individual liberation and universalwelfare”! We have the choice to study and experimentwith it as it is our eternal right, privilege and also agolden opportunity! In other words, SUPERLIVING isblossoming of every aspect of our life into innate, supreme and ult imate as well as omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent visionary wisdom, realromance and brave benevolence! Thus what weexperience in our study and practice is all thatmatters and not what could be claimed or assured!
