Superintendent’s Memo
For the Week of November 13th– 16th, 2018

Question of the week, Page 4
Win a great prize!
Last week I was very excited to be invited to Lakeland College.
President, Alice Wainwright-Stewart, hosted a number of
superintendents in a tour of their facilities. We were so pleased to be
able to tour the new Animal Health Technology Facility. This
impressive new facility has been set up as a functioning clinic and the
students we spoke with were very pleased by their learning
environment. The opportunity to work with state of the art
equipment, in a work-like environment, provides students with a
tremendous opportunity. Students coming out of this program will
be well prepared to enter the world of work in their chosen field. We
also had a chance to tour the new dairy barn on campus. The work of
LLC to support a student run farming operation is incredible! The
production of milk out of this facility was very similar to what might
be observed at any working dairy farm. Being able to see both an
automated and more
traditional dairy process
was very informative. The
passion that students
show for their work and
learning was very
rewarding to see. Finally,
we were provided with an
experience with the Fire
and Emergency Services Program! The superintendent group dawned
their fire gear (helmets) and
saw how the students
attacked a car on fire in a
garage. As well, we entered
a room that simulated a
burning couch and then a
fully engulfed fire. The
pictures speak for
themselves!
MISSION: Buffalo Trail Public Schools is committed to maximizing student learning,
in a safe and caring environment, supported by a highly effective team.

The number of students from across Canada
who travel to Vermilion to participate in this
program is a testament to the high quality
learning experience it provides. Some of the
students we spoke to shared that this
program comes highly recommended as a
prerequisite to applying to be a firefighter.
We were very close to their graduation day
and there was as genuine sense of
appreciation for the quality educational
experience that this program provides. Buffalo Trail Public Schools is very pleased to partner
with LLC in a number of programs. Many of our students are involved in CTS and dual credit
programming while in high school. As well, many go on to attend LLC as a part of their post
secondary learning experience. What a great partnership we have!
BTPS is once again excited to be a part of the Alberta Rural Education Symposium 2019
Organizing Committee. The work of this event is to promote the many positive aspects of
life in rural Alberta and the excellent educational opportunities
available to our students. Additionally, we are trying to provide
information to government that helps them understand the
challenges that accompany the decline in population in most of
rural Alberta. This is the eight annual ARES and it will be held in
Edmonton from March 3rd to 5th. The theme of this year’s
Symposium is “Schools and Communities – Partners in Action”.
We are inviting our community partners to the table to engage
in conversations about how we can work collaboratively to
support each other. For more information about this event you can visit the website at
www.albertaruraleducation.ca.
Take care,

SCHOOL BUS SAFETY WEEK POSTER CONTEST 2018 WINNERS:
Judging the BTPS local SBSW poster contest is the best part of
being a member of the Transportation Department. We have
so much fun looking at all of the fantastic entries. All of the
entries have been sent to Black Gold Regional Division for the
STAA provincial contest. Below are the winners of the BTPS
contest. Sorry if we have the wrong teacher listed beside the
student, but if it wasn’t on the entry form or on the back of the
poster, so we went with the Art teacher in PowerSchool. Thank
you to the teachers for taking the time to have their students
participate in this fun, but educational poster contest and thank you to all of the students for
their great artwork!!

New Google Shortcuts: Google has create a series of new shortcuts to make working with Chrome and Drive more efficient. What they have created is new URLs that can be put in the search bar of Chrome. Below is a incomplete list of some of the new URLs. Http://doc.new opens a new Google doc Http://sheets.new opens a new Google Sheets Spreadsheet Http://deck.new opens a new Google presentation Http://site.new opens a new Google sites website Http://form.new opens a new Google form As an example of how you use this feature, in Chrome type doc.new ( don’t need the http:// part) in the address bar and hit enter, a new untitled doc will open. If you want to take it to the next level, you could make bookmarks of your favorite new shorts cuts. You could then access with one click. Not a game changer but it is a productivity boost
VLAN Combinations: The combining of VLANs into a data VLAN was successfully piloted on Nov 6th at WHS and WES. This was ac-complished after hours on the backend of the switch configurations and the schools reported no problems. As schools are one they will be able to use, air server Chromecast etc. from BTPS owned devices to the smartboards in classrooms. Edgerton and Hughenden are scheduled for Nov 9th with the rest of the schools to follow this week
Google Account security: Every time you log into your Google account from a different machine a security warning is sent to your Gmail, informing you of the log in. This is Google’s way of informing you that your account has been accessed. If the log in was you, just accept it and all is well. However, what do I do if it was not me. 1. First change your password; this instantly changes the key to the account. 2. If you are still concerned you can call helpdesk and ask that that all your Google sign in cookies be deleted.
This will delete all account logins stored which along with a password change will stop anyone but you ac-cessing your account

2018-19 ORC Resource Trials!
The ORC runs resource trials from November 1st to
the December 15th break. The trial resources are
included in the regular ORC collection and can be
accessed like any of the other ORC resource, both in
school and remotely, during the trial period.
To read more information about the various re-
sources included in the trial, please visit
the ORC Province-Wise Resource Trials page on
the ORC Support Site. Here, you can read a descrip-
tion of each resource, learn what grade ranges it sup-
ports, and access various training materials to help
you explore the resource! (These include video tutori-
als, lesson plans, and training guides).
Mid-way through November, the ORC will also pub-
lish user surveys for each resource on
the ORC Province-Wise Resource Trials page.
Please take some time to review the resources and
let us know what you think in the surveys: Do you like
the resource? Would you like to see it added to
the ORC collection? Would you like to see it replace
a current resource?

The Calm Schools Initiative
In today’s rapidly changing world, children face unique social and emotional challenges. Kids are experiencing greater pressures earlier in life, and feel more stress and anxiety than ever be-fore.What if a student’s school day began with a few moments of quiet and stillness? Numerous studies have shown the many benefits of teaching mindfulness. Through mindfulness education, kids can develop a lifelong capacity for greater self-awareness, concentration, patience, and resili-ence.
Calm is giving free Mindfulness training tools to
every teacher in the world. Any teacher with a K-
12 classroom, anywhere in the world, can get free
access to Calm’s paid subscription service
(available on Android, iOS and the web). Teachers
will have unlimited access to their growing library
of guided meditations and mindfulness exercises,
including Calm Kids, their programs tailored for
age groups from pre-K through high school. Over
the coming year, they will be steadily adding to
their Calm Kids library, equipping teachers with an
ever-expanding supply of content crafted for the
unique needs of their students.

The players you see are from Clandonald (the Cougars) and Dewberry (the Panthers). I extended an in-
vitation to Janice Jackson and her gym students to play a fun meet against our Dewberry jr girls volley-
ball team. It was a great evening and we plan to meet again next Wednesday in Dewberry. The kids from
both sides were super excited to play the kids “down the road”. There were lots of Clandonald parents
cheering! The Dewberry team was made of girls from Grade 5-7 and Clandonald was Grades 4-6. In the
end Dewberry won 3 games to 2. We are planning on more fun meets with basketball and badminton!

On Monday, November 5th Mannville's grade 6 class had the opportunity to attend a mock
council meeting at the village office. Earlier in the school year, the 6's had completed a letter
writing unit in ELA where they were asked to write a persuasive letter to the village council per-
suading them of something they feel Mannville needs.
While at the council meeting their letters were discussed. Students were also given the oppor-
tunity to have a chance to role play some positions such as the mayor and councilor.
