    SuperHero U Day 2

David slays Goliath, Overcoming His FearsBible Story: I Samuel 17:1-51Bottom Line: Give your all to help, even if you're scared.

Setting and Background:Ideally, create Goliath by standing an actor out of sight (behind a barrier?) at the side of the stage. Use a

light behind him to cast a large shadow on the wall at the back of the stage. The actor should wield a

sword and wear some kind of armorto complete the look of his shadow. If a shadow Goliath cannot

be created, use a larger than life drawing or PowerPoint projection and have an actor provide Goliaths

    voice from offstage.

At the beginning of the story, seat two Israelite soldiers with the kids just beyond the stage area. One

will be Davids brother, the other a random soldier who tells David of the prize Saul wil l give to the one

who slays Goliath. David begins the story out of the room.

Suspend a sheet/tarp from the ceil ing (partially around a divider?) to create Sauls t ent at the side of the

room, offstage. Saul and his armor remain in the tent, out of sight, until the appropriate time in the

    story.

David moves throughout the room as the story plays out, talking with the soldiers, talking with Saul, and,

finally, confronting Goliath. At each point, David will step out of the action to speak his fears to

himself/to the kids. In the end, he realizes he can face the giant, despite his fears, because God is with

    him.

    Story:Warping Wendy introduces.

Hey, It's me again, Warping Wendy! Do you remember who we talked about yesterday? That's right!

Rahab! Even though she didn't have super powers, she wasa hero because she helped God's people.

Does anyone remember who was in her family? It was King David! Today we're gonna visit David

before he was a king. (Do Warp Away sequence)

(SFX: Do warping or swooshing sound as lights go out into the opening of the story)

    The Giants Challenge

Goliath: (Moving menacingly, if done as a shadow) What do we have here?!! Israelite DOGS! Why do

you come out for battle? Am I not a Philistine? Are you not merely servants of Saul?

Goliath: (Boldly and loudly) I challenge you this day! Choose a man for yourselves, and let him comedown to me. If he dares to fight me, and killsme, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail and kill

him, then you shall be our servants.

Goliath: (Shouting) I DEFY YOU THIS DAY! GIVE ME A MAN THAT WE MAY FIGHT!

Davids Brother and Soldier 1: (Turn to the children around you and say) How about you? Why dont

you go fight him. Theres no way Im going up against that monster. That giant is bigger than five of

you. Is anyone going to face him?

    David Is Called to Fight

(David enters, carrying a burlap bag of provisions over his shoulder. As he moves up through the kids,

he asks them curiously, Whats going on? As David nears the front of the childrens area, he sits the

bag next to one of the children and moves to the front, near his brother and Soldi er 1.)

David: (Asking the children sitting around him) Whats going on here? Wheres the battle? (Pointing at

    Goliath)Who is THAT?!

(Pause briefly to allow the kids to respond to Davids questions)

David: (To Soldier 1) Why is everyone just sitting here? Why isnt anyone fighting?

Soldier 1: Were all terrified of that GIANT, Goliath. Oh, I wish I were brave. Do you know what the king

will do for the man who kills him?

David: (Intrigued)No?! What would he do?

Soldier 1: Oh, man! (Counting off the rewards on his fingers) First of all, the king would make him really

rich. Second, hell give the man one of his daughters as a wife. And (looking from side to side)I hear his

family would have to pay no taxes. . .ever!

David: (Puzzled)Then why has no one challenged this man?

Soldier 1: Um, have you seen him? Hes huge! I mean, Id love to be rich . . . be a prince, even. . . but I

would much prefer to be alive.

David: Come on, we are the people of the l iving God, and hes just some pagan Phil istine. How can he

    triumph against us?

(David begins asking the children around him Is it true the king will make the person who kills the

giant rich? or Did you hear what the king will do for the person who kills the giant? or Are you

going to try to fight the giant?)

(While David talks with the children, Soldier 1 walks over to Sauls tent at the side of the room. He

remains there until Davids confrontation with his brother.)

(After David talks to several children, his brother, Eliab, stands directly in front of David.)

Eliab: (Defensively)What are you doing here anyway, twerp? (Pushes Davids chest) Shouldnt you be

at home watching those few measly sheep Dad lets you watch?

David: What have I done now, brother? I was only asking a question.

(Soldier 1 returns and stands next to David)

Soldier 1: Boy, the king has heard of your will ingness to fight Goliath. He wishes to speak with you.

(As Soldier 1 leads David to Sauls tent, a surprised David speaks in broken sentences (as if having

trouble getting a word out over the noise) I didnt say I wanted to fight him. Or But, but, I never

said that. Or Wait. Wait. I think you misunderstood.)

    David Accepts the Challenge

(Soldier 1 leaves David outside Sauls tent and moves to the corner of the room; he will collect Sauls

discarded armor later. David paces alone outside the tent for a minute, speaking his fears to

himself/the children. Warping Wendy warps directly in front of King Saul's tent. She tries to hide so

she pretends to be the king's servant and picks up the fan and starts fanning at the entrance to the

    king's tent.)

(SFX: Do short warping or swooshing sound as Warping Wendy enters scene)

David: What is happening here? I wasnt necessarily thinking that I should fight that monster alone. I

just know that God is on our side. HE wil l give us victory over all these Phil istines, including Goliath. But

to fight him alone . . . his legs are as big as my whole body. How am I supposed to stand up against him?He terrifies me! This is insane!

(David paces a little, as if trying figure things out)

David: Come on, David. Pull it together. Think about it: when you watch your fathers sheep, you

protect them. . . . and the Lord protects you. (Speak with more enthusiasm and confidence) Remember

when that lion came and took one of the sheep away? (David mimes the scene as he remembers it)I

caught his beard, struck, and killed him.

(Saul exits his tent, stops to glance at WW since she kind of stands out, is about to say something, then

choses not to and just shakes his head a little bewildered and turns toward David, interrupting David

as he is lost in thought)

Saul: You?! You are the one whos going to fight Goliath? But youre just . . . a boy. That Philistine has

been a man of war since before you were born!

David: (Stepping forward with confidence and bowing before Saul) My lord, when your servant kept his

fathers sheep, if a lion or bear took one of the flock, I went after him. I would catch him, strike him

down, and kill him. This uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, for he has defied the armies

of the living God. Just as the Lord was with me when I faced the lion and the bear, He shall be with me

    before this Philistine.

Saul: (Shaking his head with some doubt) Then go, and the Lord be with you. So that you might have achance against this giant, take my armor and my sword into battle with you. Come with me, son.

(Saul leads David into his tent. Outfit David with armor and a sword ridiculously too large for him)

(David exits the tent wearing the armor, and has renewed doubts about the battle. He tries to walk

around with the armor and sword as he expresses his fears to himself/the children)

    David Arms Himself for Battle

David: (Struggling to lift the sword) What was I thinking? I can barely lift this sword. How can I hope to

defend myself against Goliath, much less launch an attack against him? (Fidgeting with the armor)And

this armor weighs almost as much as I do! Ill simply fall to the ground under its weight when I step onto

the battlefield. Goliath will simply crush my head like a ripe melon. (Getting increasingly agitated and

frightened) How did I get myself into this situation?! He is going to kill me! I cannot fight that giant!

What am I going to do? How am I going to face Goliath alone?

(David drops the sword in frustration and falls to his knees. David looks at the ground for a moment,

    before looking up toward heaven)

(David takes off the armor and stands, looking toward heaven the entire time)

David: But Imnot alone. Im never alone. And I dont fight with my own strength . . . with my own

arms . . .(kicking the sword). . . with my own weapons.

(David looks around the room, and spies his staff. As David moves to pick up the staff, his sling, and

    five smooth stones, he says)

David: The Lord is with me. The Lord strengthens me. The Lord will equip me. (Raises his staff in the air

and shouts) And the Lord will give me victory!

David: (Walking up to Saul and bowing)My king, I cannot go into battle with your weapons, for I have

not tested them. But I shall go into battle with my Lord.

Saul: (Nodding)The Lord be with you, son.

(Soldier 1 collects Sauls sword and armor and returns them to the tent)

    David Ventures into Battle

Goliath: (Loudly taunting the Israelites)What?! Nobody! You simpering cowards! Does none of you

    dare to fight Goliath!

(David steps to the front of the stage to face (the shadow or image of) Goliath)

    David: I will fight you.

Goliath: (Laughing mockingly) What is this? Is this . . . boy . . . the best the armies of your god can

muster? Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks? (Laughs loudly)

(David looks down at Goliaths feet, then looks up, up, up to dramatize how tall and impo sing Goliath

is. David turns one last time to address his fears and the children)

    David: This monster is huge.

Eliab: (Moving beside David) (Speaking with a frightened whisper just be sure to be loud enough for the

children to hear)Arent you scared, brother?

David: (Speaking to his brother and the kids) Im terrif ied, Eliab. But being scared doesnt mean I cant

stand up to him. I may be scared, but Im not alone. (Speaking with increasing confidence) I know who

goes before me. I know who stands behind. The God of Angel Armies is always by my side.

(David turns around to face Goliath. David sits his staff to the side, pulls out his sling, and assumes a

    confident stance for battle.)

David: (Shouting with full confidence) You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you

in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the

Lord will deliver you into my hand, and all the earth will know that there is a God in Israel. THE BATTLE

BELONGS TO THE LORD! (David lifts his sling, pretends to put stone in, and begins to swing as the lights

    dim out.)

(SFX: Trumpet battle cry as David begins to swing sling)

Warping Wendy comes forward to close.

Well , we all know what happened in that battle. God gave courage to a young scared boy because he

chose to help and stand in faith. God gave victory to the Israelites because of David, and God wants to

give you victory even when you are scared. Now go conquer your Goliath! See you next time, bye!

    WW runs off stage.
