Hardinge Super-Precision Spindle The Hard inge Super-Prec ision preloaded ball bearing spind le is mounted in the solid one-piece totally enc losed headstock housing for maximum rigid ity and susta ined accuracy .

The bearings require no adjustment and are permanently lu bricated to operate at all speeds without attention. Preloadi ng eliminates all end play, rad ial play and

4

assures the turning of true pieces. The co llet seats directly in the hardened and precision

ground spind le, thus eliminat ing troublesome sleeves and adapters that introduce costly inaccurac ies.

The rigidity provided for sustained accuracy also provides the proper support for work when cutting with modern too ling.

Fast Lever Collet Chucking Positive collet gripping is fast and easy with the lever operated collet closer which is standard equipment on th is modern lathe. Collet tension is instantly adjustable throughout the fu ll range from light to heavy holding power without the use of tools. A sing le movement to the left closes the collet. A sing le movement to the right opens the co llet.

Handwheel for Spindle Your operators will appreciate the standard bu il t- in handwheel fo r the spindle. It provides a safe, conven ient means for rotat ing the spind le by hand . . . a must when indicating or inspecting precision work. This featu re means increased production at lower cost.

Spindle Speed

Infinitely Variable Spindle Speeds Your lathe operators wi ll get full value for you when using the Hardinge variable spindle speed because it is easy to operate. This cannot be said for the ordinary lathe with complicated features which operators refuse to use because of the effort required to operate such machines.

With the Hardinge TFB-H lathe, the spindle speed may be increased or decreased at the touch of a control button. Selecting the exact speed required can be done while the too l is cutting. It is easy to vary the spindle speed to obtain desired rate of production and specified surface finish .

Independent Electric Variable Feeds Your operators will produce more work with less effort in less time and with more precision on the Hardinge TFB-H lathe. The independent variable electric feed for carriage and cross slide provides complete freedom of operation. You are not tied down to conventional rates of feed in relation to spindle speed. With the machine in operation, you simply turn the control knob to obtain

Simply Turn A Knob

for Exact Feed

5

the exact feed for efficient chip removal and best surface finish.

The rate of feed can be changed instantly at any time, even when the tool is cutting, without wasting va luab le production time stopping the machine to shift gears as is the case with slow conventional lathes.

I

Full Bearing Carriage

A solid full bearing carriage means the cross slide and cutting tool have maximum support to withstand heavy cuts and high work speeds used for economical machining with modern cutting tools.

The carriage has a full bearing on the front dovetail; it has a full bearing on the top of the bed, and a full bearing on the rear dovetail. The dovetail design of carriage and bed ways means that all tool-carrying slides are dovetailed together for maximum rigidity and accuracy. Dovetailing of compound and cross slides has been done for years - now Hardinge has all three dovetailed together. The carriage dovetail bed ways are pressure lubricated.

The easy operating snap-clutches for the longitudinal and cross slide feed are properly located for convenient operation.

The apron for carriage is of the double wall type, completely enclosing precision gears and clutches. The en-

6

tire carriage gear train runs in a sealed oil bath . Sheet Teflon" bearing surface between carriage and

bed greatly reduces friction and permits precise gib adjustment for increased accuracy. Hardinge Black and White Dials are the easiest reading feed screw dials developed as standard lathe equipment. In operation of a lathe no other item receives such close operator attention as the feed screw dials -dial graduations control the size of the part produced. This lathe, with its fast, easy reading black and white dials, will produce more accurate work at lower cost than a lathe with conventional hard-to-read dials.

Dials are made of a permanent white, hard material with each graduation individually engraved for maximum accuracy. Each direct reading graduation of the cross slide dial is equal to .001" on work diameter.

Carriage handwheel dial graduations are .010".

Fast-Acting Four Position

Indexing Stop Rod for Carriage

The Hardinge Super-Precis ion Model TFB-H Lathe features a fast-acting fo ur position indexing stop rod. The bal l bearing mou nted stop rod movement is controlled by a ratchet hand le arrangement which rotates the stop rod 90° at each indexing.

The four movable stops are mounted on individual dovetail way sections and are stamped with large numbers for easy identification. The stops can be positioned at the left or right side of the carriage. The stops are locked in relat ive position and feature a fine adjustment screw arrangement for final close tolerance adjustment.

Hardinge Dovetail Bed • Hardened and Precision Ground Steel Bed Ways Resist Wear

• Solid Construction - No Weakening Holes or Slots

• Chips Cannot Fall on Angular Guide Ways

• Easy to Clean - No Slots or Under Cuts to Wedge Chips

• Proved Design - Used for Years on Hardinge

Chucking Machines

Analytical consideration of bed construction for opposing cutting strains brought about the dovetail carriage and bed design. Many years ago, Hardinge solved the accuracy and proper finish needs of the optical, camera, projector and range finder manufacturers. This was done with our high speed precision chucking machines having dovetai l carriage and bed construction .

Because of the design of the Hardinge bed, there can be no lifting action of the carriage as the back 30° way changes the "pushing away" force into a "pulling down" action, thus insuring bearing surfaces on the 30° back way and the top way. On the other hand, the conventional bed design resu lts in a lifting action as the conventional inverted vee way changes the "push ing away" action into a "lifting up" action, hence reducing the number of bearing surfaces. Lifting action in the conventional bed design is admitted by the many "hold

8

down" bolted sections for the carriage. This lifting action of the carriage causes chatter which means vibration and wear. Because there is no lifti ng action in the Hardinge construction, there is a steady support to bring about accuracy and fine finish. Furthermore, the Hardinge construction covers the angu lar ways so that chips cannot collect on the guide-way surfaces.

The heavy box section bed is made of a seasoned alloy, semi-steel casting. The Hardinge dovetai l bed ways are made of alloy steel, hardened and precision ground for sustained accuracy.

Between the self-contained bed and the welded steel pedestal base there are three spherical seats. Two of these spherical seats at the headstock end of the bed and one spherical seat at the tailstock end provide a three point bearing for sustained accuracy. ~

Solid Full Bearing Tailstock The correct design and substantial construction of the TFB-H tailstock are clearly apparent. Throughout, consideration was given to the fact that the tail stock should

easily support any load in working with a pre loaded ball bearing headstock.

- Features-1. Solid taUstock body - The body is not split as a part

of ordinary design in providing for a spindle lock; therefore, the TFB-H tailstock body has a uniform inside diameter which means a precision bearing for the tailstock spindle.

2. Ease of operation - The tailstock handwheel is provided with a ball bearing to absorb tool thrust which affords an unusually fine "feel" for precision work.

3. Prec ision Control - The spindle is graduated in eighths of an inch and the handwheel has a large adjustable easy reading black and white dial graduated in thousandths.

4. Black and white dial - The large adjustable easy reading black and white dial , the same type used on the cross slide and carriage handwheels, will produce more accurate work.

5. Spindle and base lock - A lever operates two substantial half nuts to hold the spindle securely in any desired travel position. The tailstock itself is clamped in any desired position along the bed by a lever operated clamp bolt.

6. Hardened and ground spindle - Has a travel of 3%" . Standard shank tools are automatically discharged from the tailstock spindle at the end of the right-hand travel.

Coolant Facilities The coolant facilities are standard equ ipment. There is an adjustable nozzle which directs coolant to the work piece.

The individually motorized pump is contro lled by a se lector switch on contro l head. With switch in "On" position, coo lant flow is continuous.

With switch in "Auto" position, coolant will run on ly when main motor is engaged.

Increased Chip Space is available in new sty le chip and coolant pan.

Spindle Drive Unit The spindle drive unit provides infinitely variab le speeds from 125 to 3000 A.P.M. Spindle speeds are push button selected at control head. Individually motor driven vertical screw raises or lowers pulley frame so that belt tension moves center sheave sideways to change ratio of pu lleys and resulting headstock spind le speed. High and low spindle speed settings are instantly available with lever operated 0 two-speed motor.

Improved Spind le Brake provides for quieter and more direct stopping action.

Tool Compartment The high speed and precision of the Hardinge TFB-H lathe will increase production for you . By keeping regularly used too ling in the conven ient bu ilt-in tool compartment your operators wi ll save valuab le time instead of walking to and from a distant tool crib.

Revolving Collet Board swings out and rotates for quick and easy collet or tailstock tooling selection.

Contour Tracing Attachment The Hardinge mechanical tracer can be mounted directly to your Hardinge TFB-H Lathe without alteration to the machine.

The standard compound slide is easily removed and the preloaded ball bearing tracing slide is applied to the cross slide in a few minutes. The template mounting bracket is clamped to the dovetail bed.

Many production jobs can be machined with this low cost un it which eliminates the expensive components of hydrau lic type duplicators.

Hardinge Engineered Cutting and Threading Tools

Your TFB-H Lathe will produce more accurate work at lower cost when using Hardinge carbide cutting and threading tools.

The Hardinge carbide tools are designed to "cut" rather than "push" the material being machined. Proper rake angles allow the material to flow freely from the cutttng edge - th is reduces cutting pressure and heat, and permits lighter chucking of the work with less distortion. Also, with a free-cutting too l, higher sp indle speeds and faster feeds can be used to obtain a better finish on the work at lower cost.

Hardinge carbide tools, in addition to being precision ground. are diamond-lapped to a fine surface finish for keen sharp cutt ing edges.
