They’ve been at it for years, traveling slowly, spending a month or more at a single location. For them, it’s about experiencing an area as those who live there do. Carine Camboulives and

Manu Bouvet don’t stay in fancy hotels; they ask for the hospitality of the people, and they get it because of who Manu and Carine are: happy, humble, enthusiastic, hard­working people who look you in the eye and greet you with a smile. “Zee ting some people don’t understand iz you ave to be zort of, ardcore. business courses they were

studying. Common choices by

the student body for internships

were banks, manufacturers,

to do something outside the norm. They agreed they

After another year at school, it was off to intern in

Guadeloupe. Then in 1993, Carine and Manu spent

six months on Maui interning at a business focused

on vacation rental. It was on this trip that the couple

1994 and further established

Connection. They focused

for international clientele.

The business ran through

P)+-*5%<&T!7D(+3&^4#)8#&still operates not far from its

original location where Manu

(+-&T(%)+$&4!%,$-]=Manu worked on getting

clientele, which meant he

needed to go and meet with

all the North Shore property owners so he could speak

intelligently to perspective clients about housing options.

This was a great opportunity for this likeable young

Frenchman to meet pretty much everyone on the North

Shore, since pretty much everyone was into vacation

Military conscription in France had been around since the days of

As his time for military service approached, Manu moved back to Paris

the conditions unreal. The exposure for Carine and

the marketing director for the French clothier Oxbow,

a brand they had both known since childhood. Oxbow

was putting together an international travel team, an

Carine’s international exposure, French roots, and

the relationship has prospered, with Manu and Carine as

primary resources for travel pieces the world over.

for a few months at a time before it was time for their

This was in the heyday of subprime lending, and Manu

International Connection plus whatever else they could

muster, the couple sealed the deal on a North Shore

Nine years later, there are no swimming pools at the

next thing they know, Carine and Manu are water lily

farmers.

Over the years, Manu and Carine have handled

On the other hand, traveling with a child opens up so

many opportunities the couple would otherwise miss.

parents of kids playing get to meet each other too.

and they open up. They are friendlier, kinder to us.”

Last fall, while back in France after a trip in remote

staying with tribal kids in areas where

few Caucasians have been before.

school asked Manu and Carine if

they would share their experience
