2016 highlights Sinha Dansersquos 25th anniversary Sinha Danse stems from a deep felt need of its founder Roger Sinha to reclaim his Indian heritage and to use this tradition to shape a modern expression of his reality His work uses the universality of the body to explore cultural harmony and dissonance and tensions born from by the collision of East and West

Sinha Dansersquos vocabulary merges the contemporary dance martial arts theatre and Bharata Natyam a dance from southern India Stories are important in Sinharsquos work stories from poets and writers and stories of his own He explores story telling in many ways as spoken word or with interactive technology driven language and this always with humour and simplicity

Sinha Dansersquos mission is to continually break boundaries and explore new creative directions By incorporating new media such as film interactive technologies and sound Sinha Danse wishes to produces interdisciplinary pieces where highly energetic dances are involved

In 2018 Sinha Danse is the first canadian company in Algeria and tours in Montreal British Columbia and Ontario in 2015-2016 Sinha Danse conceived in 2016 a new Work uniting almost a hundrer professionnal dancers and community members of the Greater Montreal with MoW - Montre(Olly)Wood In 2017 it was redone in Montreal with new participants and also in Ottawa and in 2018 in Toronto and Brampton

Roger Sinha was born in England to an Armenian mother

and an Indian father He then moved to Saskatchewan at

the age of eight A graduate of the School of Toronto Dance

Theatre he settled in Montreal and quickly took up several

fruitful collaborations with the blossoming local artistic

community In 1991 he created Sinha Danse and began

developing his distinct choreographic language based on an

intermingling of his Indian background and Canadian culture

His creations unite the Bharata Natyam Mudras a dance

originating in southern India martial arts and modern dance

This unique fusion also gave birth to hybrid choreography that

is truly one of-a-kind and which is unquestionably distinct

A Multifaceted Creator

Roger Sinha has over twenty dance creations under his belt

often integrating technology and interactive media into his

performances A renowned choreographer he also works

regularly with sponsors including Tono (2008 Beijing Olympic

games the Vancouver Winter Olympics and the Expo 2010

Shanghai China)

His works also include Burning Skin (1992 2015 2017) Borders

(2004) Benches (1996) Loha (2000) Thok (2002) Apricot

Trees Exist (2004) Zeros amp Ones (2008 2015) Thread (2008)

and Asphalt Tango (2014) just to name a few Roger Sinha is

on an indefatigable quest to retrace the imperceptible barrier

between the universal and the personal using humour and

poetry as his guide

He is also passionate about video arts producing two short

films entitled The Barber of Bangalore (2008) and Haters Nrsquo

Baiters The Culture Collision (2010) which won the Vote du

Public Canadien at the Racines de Radio-Canada International

contest in 2010 Roger is also regularly asked to teach at various

institutions including the Eacutecole de danse contemporaine de

Montreacuteal Winnipegrsquos Contemporary Dancers and the School of

Toronto Dance Theatre where he has also produced exclusive

works He has taught adults children and adolescents

2013 marked the success of Sunya which combined

four dancers and the acclaimed musical ensemble

Constantinople The piece premiered at the Place des

Arts de Montreacuteal was presented the following year by

the Conseil des arts de Montreacuteal as a tour and then was

presented again in Quebec Nova Scotia British Columbia

and Toronto in 2015

In 2016 Roger Sinha lead the community producing a

large-scale project entitled MoW - Montre(olly)Wood

This original and contemporary Bollywood dance

flashmob included five professional dancers and over

90 non-dancers It will be premiered in Longueuil this

summer and then be presented again at the Place des

Arts de Montreacuteal following five months of creation
