Greetings Sunset Families,

There are many reasons we are fortunate to work in the University Place School District. I appreciate

our families, our students and our district leaders. There is a strong sense of community that brings us

together. Another reason is the fact that we have a few foundational beliefs and practices. Our Super-

intendent, Jeff Chamberlin, recently shared these with us and I believe his words are worth repeating.

1. Our first responsibility is to provide a safe and supportive environment for all students. We are

committed to the physical and emotional safety of every child. We do everything we can to protect

our students from harm – including all forms of harassment.

2. We are committed to providing a great education for every child in our community, regardless of

their race, religion, home language, place of birth, citizenship, disability, socioeconomic status, sexual

orientation or gender identity. When individuals, families or groups face challenges that get in the

way of learning, safety or success – we take action.

3. The rich and growing diversity in our community is a blessing to us all. We welcome students from

all ethnic, racial and religious backgrounds. The many cultures, backgrounds and beliefs represented

in this community benefit everyone in our organization and better prepare our children for success in a

diverse world.

Our staff at Sunset is committed to these beliefs. If we can help, please do not hesitate to call.

Best,

Mary Godwin-Austen

Also, FUN will be providing meals to University Place students through

the summer.

Notes from the Music Room-Mr. Stillman

Happy April from the Health Room!

SKYWARD: You have a new option in Skyward to be notified if your child visits the health room. If you checked the box “to be noti-

fied of health room visits”, then you will receive an email notification. This just means that your child visited the health room on that

day…could have been a paper cut, scraped knee, chapped lips or anything. Always know that if your child has a fever or any s ignificant

injury, I WILL CALL YOU! I use my best judgment and always try to notify parents if there is any concern.

I’m looking forward to spring! Flowers and trees are blossoming and hopefully, a little more SUNSHINE.

** Here are some important facts about Vitamin D **

1. You get vitamin D through diet AND sunlight. Vitamin D is known as the “sunshine” vitamin because when your skin is exposed to

the sun, your body manufactures it. Many people only need about 15 minutes of sun three times a week for their bodies to make ade-

quate amounts of the vitamin, according to the National Institute of Health. However, when you’re in a cloudy or shady area, or when

you use sunscreen (which you should!), your body’s ability to make vitamin D is reduced. In addition, ethnic groups with darker skin

also produce lower amounts. Fortunately, you can also get vitamin D from the food you eat. One of the best sources is fatty fish, includ-

ing salmon and tuna. A 3 oz. serving of salmon contains about 450 IU of vitamin D. In addition to fish, most milk sold in the U.S. is

fortified with about 100 IU per cup. Other foods that are often fortified are orange juice, yogurt and breakfast cereal. The recommended

dietary allowance of vitamin D is 600 IU for people ages 1 thru 70 and 800 IU for older adults.

2. Vitamin D is essential for strong bones and teeth. It helps boost the immune system and it may help protect against chronic diseases.

Vitamin D has many benefits for the human body. Whether you get it through sunlight, diet, supplements, or a combination of all 3,

make sure you and your children are receiving enough of this crucial nutrient. It’s an important part of a healthy lifestyle and diet.

HAPPY SPRING and let’s all go outside and enjoy the SUN!!

Marie Bateman RN, Sunset Primary School Nurse

Please join us for the 2nd grade music performance on April 6th at 6:30 pm. We will be putting on two mini musicals! You will get to see the Teddy Bears Picnic and Into the Deep Blue Sea. You are sure to enjoy our songs and will be impressed with all the hard work our 2nd grade Tigers have done! 3rd and 4th grades have been working very hard on reading notes in the treble clef staff and are about to begin a project on writing music. They will be coming up with a multiple part piece of music and I am excited for them to begin. It should be lots of fun! 1st grade has begun work on their songs for their May performance, which will be about animals. They are very excited to get the chance to per-form and I know when it comes time for the performance, they will shine. At the end of April, our newly formed Sunset Tiger Choir will perform at a morning assembly and at our PTA Multicultural Night. They have been coming in after school and working hard to get ready for this and it will be quite a show! Bryce Stillman, Music Specialist Sunset Primary

The Library Scoop!

Read Across America was a huge success this year, we had a wild and zany time! Students and teachers enjoyed partici-pating in our second annual Dr. Seuss is on the Loose spirit week. It was fun to see the rainbow of colors for our grade level Color War Day, and see the many furry friends who came to join our all-school-read. We spilled out into the halls here at Sunset to read together in honor of Dr. Seuss! Thanks to our amazingly talented and dedicated Sunset staff, students had the opportunity to see two Dr. Seuss books read in reader’s theater style during our morning assemblies. Dr. Seuss Night was a perfect event to wrap up a fun-filled week. Our Barnes and Noble take-over was a huge success! We raised over $800 for our school while we enjoyed listening to the Ukulele Club perform, heard guest readers and participated in some Seuss style crafts and games. Thank you PTA for your wonderful support and to Barbara Kearley and Katie Jones for chairing this event! April is National Poetry Month. We will spend time sharing poems during morning assembly and in the library. Students will also be exposed to various types and styles of poetry. You may hear your child reciting favorite poems, or even experi-menting in composing their own. As a school, we will celebrate Poem in Your Pocket Day on Monday, April 24th. We will all read, share and be inspired by poetry together. During our time in the library throughout the months of April and May, students will all be engaged in a school wide focus on biographies…Walk Awhile in their Shoes! Children will learn about different historical figures that have impacted our world in a variety of ways. You may hear your child talking about Revolutionary War heroes, Jane Goodall, an environmental-ist and a leading primatologist, women who have overcome great obstacles like Rosa Parks and Helen Keller, or famous musi-cians and artists who have colored our world with their music and art. Keep your eyes open for other biographical infor-mation you find in newspapers, magazines, or other forms of media. These could make for interesting and educational dinner table conversations. Many students in grades 2-4 are continuing to read books from the Sasquatch list. The number of students who have reached the top of Sasquatch Mountain is growing. Congratulations to these new recipients! Carina Hyland (2nd time!!) Lauren Ledesma (2nd time!!) Whitney Copeland Emelia Goracke (2nd time!!) Noah Yi-Wurges (2nd time!!) Malcolm McLeod Emily Garcia Nicholas Markham Ava Marshall Lucy Cadle Max Gosciniak Vivan Keough Aurora Cordova Ethan Burtchett Brayden Marko Quinn McCune Children become good readers one book at a time. Selecting a book is a useful skill that a child can and should learn. Choosing a book independently teaches a child that we seek books for different reasons. You can also help your child select books that are neither too easy nor too hard. Much like when Goldilocks arrived at the house of the “Three Bears,” the books that a child picks should be “just right!” The library is looking for gently used floor puzzles. If your family has outgrown yours, please consider donating them to the school library. Students have discovered that the more they use their brain, the more brain they’ll have to use! Holly Albers
