I would like to thank each one of you for your love and support given me in the death of my husband and best friend, Don Beck. I didn't realize how many lives he had touched. He will be missed by all. At his request, there will be no services and I wish to honor that. He is now resting in the arms of our Heavenly Father. Thank you again! Linda Beck

A heartfelt thanks goes out to the mysterious lunch buyer for such a delightful display of kindness and generosity. Wednesday, February 11, 2015 some nameless, benevolent person generously paid for the lunches of the members of FCE. The members of Family and Community Education were holding their monthly meeting at the Pot Belly Café, and a person who remains anonymous paid for the delicious lunch. Thank you so much for brightening our day in such a surprising manner.

Chiloquin High School Radio Station (KCHS 101.5) is looking for an Advisor for the radio station. This is a volunteer position. If you can help, please contact the radio station manager, Keilani Baker at [email protected]

Chiloquin Food Pantry is graciously accepting donations of cans to help support our program. Please contact Kathy Bettles at 541-783-0972.

There will be free tax returns done in the Chiloquin Library on WEDNESDAYS between the hours of 10 am to 5 pm. Now until April 8, 2015.

Wednesday, February 18th, Yoga practice is back to 10:00 am.

The Chiloquin Vector Control District Board of Trustees will meet on Thursday February 19, 2014 at 6:30PM at the Chiloquin Community Center conference room 140 South 1st Street in Chiloquin. The public is welcomed to attend and speak with Board members. Topics for discussion include bill paying and the official start of themosquito season for 2015. Please visit our web page at www.chiloquinmosquito.org or call 541 274 0132.

The CVCD will continue to utilize an integrated mosquito control plan that is focused on larva control with all natural pest control agents rather than on fogging. Citizens do not realize that the "fogger unit " is actually producing enough mosquito control agent to continually cover an area 300 foot wide behind the fogging truck as it slowly moves on the roadway. The operator must be constantly vigilant to not fog unintended property or persons. For that reason your Board of Trustees prefers mosquito larva treatments that are easy to control and targeted to kill mosquitos before they become a problem.

Dennis Jefcoat - Chairman, Chris Friskey ViceChairman, JB Brown Treasurer, Albert Wilder Board member.

Been updating our website and here's a BRWR success story I came across from way back in 2003. Enjoy!

"This beautiful Red-tailed hawk came to us after being hit by a car. He suffered a concussion and lost the sight in one eye. We were afraid that with only half of his peripheral vision he would starve if released. Red-tails are too common to have breeding programs so we tried Pirate as an educational bird, but he had one major problem – he got car sick! So the Ambassador life was not going to work for him. New plan then. We began using food on a string that we would drag around him to teach him to track by moving his head. He soon learned to continuously move his head to increase his peripheral vision range. With practice he learned to successfully spot and kill live mice, no matter where we put them in his enclosure. With his new skill set we were able to release him in a nearby canyon. Four weeks later we saw that, not only was he doing well, but that he had found a mate. Way to go Pirate!"

In case you missed the big news, the Service has launched a major new campaign aimed at saving the declining monarch butterfly. The Service signed a cooperative agreement with the National Wildlife Federation, announced a major new funding initiative with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and pledged an additional $2 million in immediate funding for on-the-ground conservation projects around the country. Every backyard can become an oasis for monarchs and other pollinators—even in cities. Schools, youth and community groups, businesses, and state and local governments can engage in planting native milkweed and protecting monarch habitat along roadsides, rights of way, and other public and private lands. By enlisting a broad group of partners, from school children to CEOs, we will build a connected conservation constituency. http://www.fws.gov/savethemonarch/

David Dickinson, a frequent visitor to Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, NM, produced a dramatic video photo essay of this great blue heron devouring a carp in the historic floodplain of the Rio Grande. The video is available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1v5w0UK2SvE&feature=em-share_video_user

National Wildlife Refuges are important places for wildlife and for science! A new genus of arachnid has been discovered on an Oregon Refuge! Oregon Coast National Wildlife Refuges are Mite-y Proud!! A new GENUS of arachnid has been discovered on Bandon Marsh National Wildlife Refuge. It’s a predatory mite most similar to a genus only known from a region of SW Australia and part of the family collectively known as Velvet Mites. It is estimated that there are HUNDREDS of THOUSANDS of mites that remain to be discovered on Earth, so new species are found frequently, but not new genera. FCE (Family and Community Education) Meetings are the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 9:30. Meetings are open to all. We have a pot luck each month along with the lessons presented by a member. For the location and directions to the next meeting, please call Sandie Bolyard at 541-892-2336. Locally, FCE raises money for college scholarships for our Chiloquin High School Seniors. Money is raised through fund-raising projects such as a Thanksgiving turkey dinner fixings raffle with tickets being sold at Kirchers Hardware; Christmas Boutique at the Chiloquin Community Center; Kaleidoscope of Learning at Mazama High School in Klamath Falls. We are very active in our community and you will find FCE volunteers at many local events. Oregon FCE is a non-profit organization of volunteers who have worked on such issues as improving sanitary requirements in hospitals, women’s labor laws, requirements for high school teachers, and funding for the state library. Nationally, we began the school hot lunch program and pushed for bookmobile libraries. FCE asked for and got money from the legislature to fund an OSU research study on the dental caries problem in Oregon. We’ve studied our county governments and monitored their activities; worked on county and state fair boards to improve their quality; sponsored programs on rural road safety, farm safety, home safety, bike safety, Defensive Driving courses, campaigns to get the drunk drivers off the road, and child seatbelt laws. Current educational programs focus on the environment, children and television, literacy, and global issues. Current concerns include addressing the growing need for food banks, for shelters for the homeless, and for reducing the violence against women and children. Oregon FCE members donate thousands of volunteer hours and dollars to these causes.

Two Rivers Gallery: The gallery, which is a community project and has no paid employees, is seeking people to “gallery sit”. This involves talking to people who stop by to browse and shop. You do not need to be an artist, but if you are, gallery hours reduce the amount of your commission. Any time at all that you can donate to us will be very much appreciated. Contact the Gallery @ 783-3326.

Sage Community School – Sage Community School is looking for community volunteers interested in assisting Sage Community School. If you are interested in offering your services as a volunteer in any way, please contact Sandra Girdner 541-783-2533

Klamath Humane Society – volunteers needed at the Humane Society. We are getting started on our disaster program and need volunteers in the Chiloquin area. We also are looking for people who can write grants. Foster homes for dogs and cats are always needed. For more information, contact the shelter at 882-1119 or e-mail [email protected]. Start Making A Reader Today (SMART) – a statewide program working with children K-3 during school hours. Each volunteer works one-on-one with a child for ½ hour, helping them read (or reading to the youngest). We always need volunteers, whether scheduled every week or merely as a substitute reader when the regular reader is unable to attend. Call the number below for an application or fill out an on-line application at www.getsmartoregon.org. It will be the most rewarding hour you ever volunteer! Contact the SMART office at 273-2424 or the Chiloquin Elementary School at 783-2338 or call Junie Stacey at 541-281-9787

Neighborhood Watch – Agency Lake President - Sharon Huber at 541-880-6461, Secretary is Mary Morrill.

Chiloquin Branch Library - The library has many ways to get involved and many fun ways to contribute to your local community. Some opportunities: 1. Story time: If you would like to read two or three stories to a small group or preschoolers, and lead them in a simple craft or activity, the library staff can use your help 2. Summer Reading Program: There are many opportunities during the summer to help out with this very worthwhile program. 3. Honor collections: these are racks of paperback books, magazines and audiovisual materials that patrons may check out without a library card. By offering these collections, more people in the community can be reached and a greater diversity of materials can be made available without incurring the costs of cataloging and processing items for the general collections. The staff would like to have some help in keeping these racks orderly, attractive and relevant. Check with the librarian for information on how to “adopt a rack”. 4. Help with sorting donations. 5. Go through Books for Sale section and tidy it once a month or so. Stop in at the library and see what they need or give them a call at 541-783-3315.

Chiloquin Visions in Progress (CVIP) CVIP operates the Chiloquin Community Center, the Chiloquin Learns After School program, the Writer in Residence Program, and is the contact point for the Chiloquin Area Community Resource Committees and their projects. We have a volunteer list in the office where you can sign up to be available for many different “jobs” and projects. Call 783-7780 between 10 AM and 2 PM weekdays for further information. If you would like to get further involved, attend a Board meeting, held on the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 6PM in the Community Center conference room.
