I am but a child still in this discovery but as each day passes my life continues to get better. I can only pray to those new comers that find our doors that they will give themselves entirely to this simple program. Remember we deal with alcohol- cunning, baffling, powerful! The First Year of New Beginnings

My name is Kara H and I have been attending AA now for over a year. To say my life has been drastically changed is an understatement for sure. Without the program I would not have the life I have today and most importantly would not have the relationship I have with my higher power. When I came to this program I was a broken, beaten down woman who wanted nothing out of life but to end the suffering. I couldn’t imagine a life of happiness and one that I could walk through without having a drink in my hand. I thought my life of fun times and party was long behind me and now I would just have to endure the struggles without a place to escape to.

I was very fortunate to walk through the door for the first time having a sponsor and someone who could guide me in my first baby steps toward recovery. She opened my eyes to the work it takes to get and stay sober. Having done the steps, although not easy but worth it, it showed me that there was a life of joy far greater than I could ever imagine. I didn’t know then the 12 steps would play such a huge roll in my life and ones that I would refer to often and daily. I was desperate to try something different as I saw countless examples of joy and peace around me so I decided to put aside what I thought I knew and to lean on the guidance around me. At that moment I submitted and my life began to change.

In the preamble that reads “Rarely have we seen a person fail who has thoroughly followed our path. Those who do not recover are people who cannot or will not completely give themselves to this simple program” (Pg 58 BB) Hearing those words for the first time was a bit overwhelming. I began to work this program honestly and saw the steps as they were my life line, because they were/ are, and did everything I had to do in order to make another moment and day sober. I leaned on the relationships I begun to form and slowly step by step gave my will and life over to the care of God as I understood him.

Today, although not perfect, I have mended broken relationships and live a life today of peace and joy. I have gained some lifelong friends that I don’t know if I would have ever met had it not been for the doors that were opened for me. My sponsor challenges me often not only in my thinking but in my will towards God. She gives me the space to learn the lessons I need to but also finding the inner strength and love I have for myself. Through her guidance she has shown me a door that I closed a long time ago with my dreams inside. Today that door is open and I am perusing passions I had long since forgotten about. I continue to be in search for the best version of me and continuing to ad-just my actions to be one of a trustworthy person. I apologize when need and act better causing less overall dam-age. I am but a child still in this discovery but as each day passes my life continues to get better. I can only pray to those new comers that find our doors that they will give themselves entirely to this simple program. “Remember we deal with alcohol- cunning, baffling, powerful! "Sunrise" publishes articles that reflect the full diversity of experience and opinion found within the Fellow-ship of Alcoholics Anonymous. In determining content, the editor relies on the principles of the Twelve Tra-ditions. "Sunrise" values the shared experience of individual AA members working the AA program and ap-plying the principles of the Twelve Steps. Seeking neither to gloss over difficult issues nor to present such issues in a harmful or contentious manner, ""Sunrise" tries to embody the widest possible view of the AA Fel-lowship. The editor of ""Sunrise" reserves the right to accept or reject material for publication, based on the AA traditions. (We note that this policy is consistent with that of the AA Grapevine.) Articles are not intended to be statements of AA policy, nor does publication of any article constitute endorsement by ei-ther Alcoholics Anonymous or Saskatoon Area Intergroup. Submissions are always welcome.

EDITOR'S STATEMENT

I would like to extend our gratitude to the Queens House for opening its doors once again and welcoming in AA. Our evening with Friends of Bill & Bob was very well received and everyone that attended said they found great benefit. We will be continuing to bring the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous alive, 1 step at a time, the last Wednesday of each month at 7pm at Queens House. Bring your sponsor or a sponsee for another evening with friends of Bill & Bob on Wednesday January 29th.

Shane M.

Many Thanks…

I would like to thank all of those who supported me in my initiation into the AA organization this past year. I would also like to express my gratitude to those who attended the Open Houses this fall. Your attendance was much appreciated. We will be cutting back on the number of Open Houses we host in the new year but please remember that the Central Office is always open to you.

Have a wonderful holiday season.

History of Floral Discussion Group

This group was established in late 1979 or 1980. It was mainly started by a few AA members who had been attending various meetings in Saskatoon, mainly Shamrock and Welcome Group.

These individuals were mainly Glen T., Don C., Ed J., Lawrence McG., Garry P., Bud B. Some have passed away, but there are a few who are still faithful members.

These few men not only believed in the AA program but also the need for fellowship, thought that they would like to move along and grow in sobriety together. After three years together and accomplishing the steps, they were undecided as to what to do and if the should start their own group.

Fortunately Glen T. lived in the vicinity of the old Floral School, which had been converted into a community center. Meetings began on Tuesdays evening at 8 o’clock pm, in the hall, which has continued to this day.

Over the years there have been some people who have came out to Floral to get away fro the city. Here they could become anon-ymous. (At first, or sometime ago, alcoholics thought they might be seen going to AA meetings by other people in the community, such as friends, family, or business associates.)

Over the year s at Floral we have attempted to share the message of unity, strength, hope, peace, love and acceptance of all.

We have a strong sense of Group Unity and Conscience which continues to this day.

Many people have come and gone over the past 40 years. Some who continue to be sober for a long time, some for short periods of relief along their journey.

From information gathered from member lists and personal information, there have been 18 members who attended Floral regu-larly who have now passed.

May they Rest in Peace.

Also at Floral we have attempted to establish strong bonds of friendship, loyalty, love & sobriety. We attempt to do this by:

Having regular business meetings

Summer time BBQ

Christmas Party

And Contributing regularly to:

Intergroup

District 91

General Service Board-New York

Thank you to all of the people who have attended in some form or way on our journey to sobriety and Happy Destiny.

From,
