The home is owned by Paul Ciniglio an Environmental Scientist who has lived in the county all his life and is an international pioneer of low carbon new and retrofit housing. The refurbishment project costing Paul, >£30,000 was supported by the South Downs Joint Committee sustainable development fund. Full and current project details can be found at www.sunpowerco2ttage.co.uk (site under development) including a suppliers page. Wherever possible local suppliers, materials and tradesmen were used. The project was formally co-opened on 26th March 2010 by Andrew Lee CEO of the Sustainable Development Commission & John Doggart Chair of the SEA. *Overview of the scale of the UK housing retrofit challenge / Sunpower CO2ttage project context The provision of heat and power to the UK’s 24 million existing homes is responsible for over a quarter of all carbon dioxide emissions (27%), the principal gas associated with the cause of global warming. It is estimated that as many as 85% of the existing homes with us today will still be in occupation in 2050. In 2008 the UK Government introduced legislation via the Climate Change Act which sets an extremely challenging target requiring CO2 emissions to be reduced by 80% by the year 2050. In order to achieve this target, in the domestic sector alone, some 500,000-600,000 homes will require complete whole house energy refurbishments every year until the middle of the century to help avoid the catastrophic effects of global warming.

Sunpower CO2ttage is a privately owned

domestic dwel l ing that has undergone a

systematic whole house energy eff ic ient

retrofit project to bring about an 80%

reduct ion in its overal l carbon dioxide

emissions associated with the home in its

use. The home is a two bedroom mid terraced

property tradit ional ly built in a cottage style

in 1990 in Stroud, a v i l lage in the heart of the
