TRANSCRIPT
Completed in ear ly 2010, the home joins a
national network of other exemplar homes
open to the public showing how we can cut
cl imate change emiss ions from our exist ing
houses whilst preserving and enhancing our
heritage. It is the f irst superhome in
Hampshire to meet the challenge of s lashing
its emissions by 80%, something al l homes
must achieve if we are to give the world a
chance*. Come along and be inspired by the
ways of saving energy and money in our
homes.
The package of energy saving measures
include vast ly improved thermal insulation
and air t ightness; recyclable ‘A’ energy rated
argon f i l led double glazing with low
emissivity g lass; local ised extract vent i lat ion
with heat recovery; eff ic ient Air Source Heat
Pump for space heat ing combined with low
water volume radiators, wire less control and
ful ly insulated concealed pipe-work;
highly eff ic ient evacuated tube solar thermal
panels; solar photovoltaic panels generating
free and c lean e lectr icity on si te; low energy
l ighting including new style LED’s; energy
consumption and so lar generat ion meters;
‘AAA’ energy rated household appliances and
water saving measures inc luding ultra low
dual f lush WC, aerated shower head, water
meter and rain water harvesting butts.

This house is part of the ‘Old Home Super
Home’ network, an a l l iance of almost 50
homes that have reduced their total
household carbon footprint by at least
60%, more information at
www.superhomes.org.uk inc luding an on
l ine open home booking faci l ity.
NHER energy and carbon modell ing
software was undertaken by consultants
Bri l l iant Futures to verify the modelled
carbon emission reductions. The actual
performance of the home in use is now
being monitored to ascertain the real
savings that can be achieved for
comparison against the original targets.
This data wi l l be periodical ly reviewed
during a minimum period of monitor ing of
36 months while the home remains open to
the public on selected days. The case study
wil l be updated and publ ished at the end of
this period for dissemination.
Sunpower CO2ttage is bel ieved to be the
most energy effic ient ly improved home in
Hampshire to date . The home is owned by
Paul C inig l io an Environmental Sc ientist who
has l ived in the county al l h is l i fe and is an
international pioneer of low carbon new and
retrofit housing. The refurbishment project
costing Paul , >£30,000 was supported by the
South Downs Joint Committee sustainable
development fund. Ful l and current project
detai ls can be found at
www.sunpowerco2ttage.co.uk (site under
development) including a suppl iers page.
Wherever poss ible local suppliers, mater ials
and tradesmen were used.
The project was formally co-opened on 26th
March 2010 by Andrew Lee CEO of the
Sustainable Development Commission &
John Doggart Chair of the SEA.
