Sundre and Area Youth Survey Summary Report (draft Oct. 5 for final review)

Greenwood Neighbourhood Place Society developed the youth survey as one part of the Sundre and Area Community Study. This survey was designed as a place for youth ages 12 to 19 to share their views about:

What is good about living in Sundre, nearby communities and the surrounding area?

What needs to be changed to make it better?

Participants in the survey completed tick box questions in the following areas: • Community places and activities • Best public outdoor and indoor places • Community resources and services • Creation of a Youth Centre• Communications and information

The survey also included optional space for comments on all these topics as well as the questions noted above. All survey responses were anonymous.

The Youth Survey was available online from April 6 to May 6, 2021. Two hundred and forty five (245) responses were received and a very large number included detailed comments and ideas. Many thanks to everyone who participated! Thanks also to staff and administration at Sundre High School and River Valley School for their assistance with this project. The responses and comments of participating youth are summarized in the pages that follow.

The final report of the GNP Sundre and Area Community Study will include summaries of the results of the Youth Survey and the Community Survey completed earlier this year. The final report will also include information provided by local community organizations and service providers and will be available on the GNP website (www.mygnp.org) when all the research is completed.

A number of comments identified stores/restaurants as areas for improvement – e.g. more fast food restaurants, pet stores, gas stations.

Access to job opportunities, volunteer opportunities and skills training were also mentioned.

Another comment was:

“A theatre and/or a bowling alley would add so much appeal to the town of Sundre! It would provide individuals of all ages with an enjoyable way to spend their time in town and greatly increase the sense of community.”

Many of the suggestions and ideas above are also addressed in later survey questions

It is important to note that fourteen (14) survey participants said that they are happy with things as they are, or didn’tsee the need for any changes in the places and activities listed.

8. Internet access – Summary of responses and comments:

Forty nine percent (49%) of the responses identified the need for major improvement in internet access. An additional 36% identified the need for some improvement. Comments identified the following problems – it’s really slow, access is inconsistent (cuts in and out, glitches, crashes); difficult to do school work at home; sometimes not good even at school; slow with multiple users; not enough public access; expensive; doesn’t work for games. “The internet all throughout the town has been absolutely awful for years...”

“WiFi for people out of town, such as myself, is exceptionally bad...”

“Regardless of where you are, the internet never seems to be very good. I am not sure if that is due to our lack of service, location, or some other factor; but it's awful.”

“We should have an actual town WiFi, so if you want to connect you would just put in Sundre WiFi and it would connect you for free instead of using data or going to places where there is WiFi.”

“There is hardly any place to connect to WiFi in Sundre to notify someone if needed.”

“It works, but it's often quite slow.”

Final Note: The last question on the survey asked “Did we miss anything?”

Seventy six (76) survey participants responded to this question. Almost all indicate that the survey did not miss anything and/or covered most topics of concern to youth: e.g. This pretty much covered everything”; “I don't think you missed anything”; “...this survey went very in depth and explored a number of topics about improving Sundre for youth”.

Several comments identified the importance of including youth participation: “...it's good, thanks for asking”; “....this was a great idea to engage us in these decisions”; “Thanks for making this survey”. “Thank you for trying to help us and make our town more fun”.

Many thanks to all the Sundre and area youth who contributed to this survey project!

We welcome your comments, ideas and suggestions for change - all great resources for planning activities and services for the future.
