Sundeala FR Board achieves Class B-s1, d0 to BS EN 13501-1 both as an uncovered notice board and as a fabric covered composite notice board panel. This means it is safe for use throughout public buildings and exceeds the minimum mandatory classification for corridors and

circulation areas as well as being safe for use in large classrooms and high risk areas.

Tests performed at fire research establishments have shown that notice boards will significantly accelerate the spread of fire if they are

incorrectly fire rated. Boards are prone to spreading fire by convection, which accounts for more fatalities than any other means, according to

government guidance.

It is vital that the fire certificate covers the board as a whole, particularly the core material of the board, and does not refer only to

the fire rating of any covering used.

Installing notice boards that meet or exceed the correct fire rating will slow the spread of fire through a building and potentially buy precious time for building users to evacuate.

Building Regulations specify the use of fire resistant materials in public buildings – guidance for complying with these regulations can be found in detail in Approved Document B, Vol 2 and have been expanded for additional guidance in BB 100 for school buildings.

These documents outline the following requirements:

• Rooms and classrooms that exceed 30 square metres;

• High risk areas, including science labs, kitchens and technology rooms;

• Lobbies, reception areas, corridors, social spaces and other ‘circulation’ areas.

REGULATORYREQUIREMENTS & ADVICE

The minimum legal requirement is for schools to use certified, fire resistant notice boards in the following areas:

• Protected fire evacuation routes (boards should be covered, less than 3m wide and installed with at least 1m spacing).

• Displays should not block fire exits or be close to potential sources of ignition such as soft furnishings.

Lower rated boards are permissible in certain conditions, but together with the Chief Fire Officers Association and relevant Government Guidelines, we recommend using fire resistant displays throughout.

There are only two legally recognised fire safety standards for notice boards in the UK:

• European testing for Reaction to Fire (EN 13501-1: 2007 + A1: 2009) - fire resistance ratings from B (highest) to F (lowest)

• British Standard BS 476 parts 6 and 7 - fire resistance ratings 0 (highest) to 3 (lowest)

Fire Rated Boards must be certified compliant with one or other of these standards. Fire certificates for the British standard must be for the complete board, not just the fabric, and need to cover both parts 6 and 7. Many boards are advertised as Class 1 but this refers only to the fabric covering and as such does not adhere to building regulations.

Because Sundeala FR Board is manufactured without synthetic binders or harsh chemical solvents and is coloured with natural mineral pigments, it can be safely installed in working and learning environments without concern for excessive VOC emissions, contributing to a safe and healthy working environment for students and employees.

UNIQUELY ECOLOGICAL

Sundeala FR Board uses recycled cellulose fibres from used newsprint and commercial and domestic waste that might otherwise go to landfill. Sundeala FR Board is the only notice board material on the market in the UK that does not use any virgin fibres and as such it is environmentally friendly and ecologically sustainable.

The fibres that comprise Sundeala FR Board are broken down using water from the local river then pressed and dried to produce a robust, rigid board. Water pressed from the board is recycled back into the process and is the only by-product of the manufacturing process, which returns to the natural water cycle.
