Christians aren’t people who are going to
heaven because they’re good.
Christians are people who are good because
they know they’re going to heaven.

Many of you have read C.S. Lewis’s book The Lion, the Witch and the Ward-robe. The book has a great line in it where Mr. Beaver describes Aslan, the Lion who also serves as the Christ figure of the book, to Susan. It reads:
“Aslan is a lion-the Lion, the great Lion." "Ooh" said Susan. "I'd thought he was a man. Is he quite safe? I shall feel rather nervous about meeting a lion "… "Safe?" said Mr. Beaver ..."Who said anything about safe? 'Course he isn't safe. But he's good. He's the King, I tell you.”
In a way that no one else could, C.S. Lewis highlights in just a few lines one of the big mistakes we often make when thinking about Jesus. Jesus is the “Lion of the tribe of Judah” (Revelation 5:5) but, like Susan in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, we feel rather nervous about meeting a lion. So what do we do? Sadly, we often get so nervous we no longer think of Jesus as a lion but rather begin to describe Him as a docile, declawed house cat. We take Jesus’ “roar” about the coming judgment and turn it into a soft “meow” that is less intimidat-ing. We begin to think of Jesus as “safe” rather than the all-powerful, all-holy God.
Is Jesus safe? Well, Jesus is good. Jesus is loving. Jesus is willing to die so you might have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10). But if by safe we mean “is Jesus tamable,” then the answer is a resounding “no.” We cannot put God on a leash and we do Him a great injustice when we think of Him or describe Him in a way that doesn’t reflect His glory and power. However, we likewise do Him a great injustice when we don’t remember that God chooses to use His glo-ry and power to secure for us forgiveness and life.
Aslan may have been good and loving, but He was still a lion. Our God is good and loving, but He is still our almighty LORD. May we always remember this and give Him our praise and worship.
