People Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

THE FIRST LESSON Ezekiel 33:7-11

Reader A reading from the book of the prophet Ezekiel.

You, mortal, I have made a sentinel for the house of Israel; whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me. If I say to the wicked, “O wicked ones, you shall surely die,” and you do not speak to warn the wicked to turn from their ways, the wicked shall die in their iniquity, but their blood I will require at your hand. But if you warn the wicked to turn from their ways, and they do not turn from their ways, the wicked shall die in their iniquity, but you will have saved your life. Now you, mortal, say to the house of Israel, Thus you have said: “Our transgressions and our sins weigh upon us, and we waste away because of them; how then can we live?” Say to them, As I live, says the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from their ways and live; turn back, turn back from your evil ways; for why will you die, O house of Israel?

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Pueblo Demos gracias a Dios.

PSALM 119:33-40

Reader Let us read today’s appointed Psalm in unison. Teach me, O Lord, the way of your statutes, * and I shall keep it to the end. Give me understanding, and I shall keep your law; * I shall keep it with all my heart. Make me go in the path of your commandments, * for that is my desire. Incline my heart to your decrees * and not to unjust gain. Turn my eyes from watching what is worthless; * give me life in your ways. Fulfill your promise to your servant, * which you make to those who fear you. Turn away the reproach which I dread, * because your judgments are good. Behold, I long for your commandments; * in your righteousness preserve my life.

SALMO 119:33-40

He aquí, anhelo tus mandamientos; * en tu justicia, preserva mi vida.

THE SECOND LESSON Romans 13:8-14

Reader A reading from Paul’s letter to the Romans.

Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. The commandments, ‘You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not covet’; and any other commandment, are summed up in this word, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law.

Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us live honorably as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarrelling and jealousy. Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires..

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God.

Pueblo Demos Gracias a Dios.

THE GOSPEL Matthew 18:15-20

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said, “If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault when the two of you are alone. If the member listens to you, you have regained that one. But if you are not listened to, take one or two others along with you, so that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If the member refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if the offender refuses to listen even to the church, let such a one be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.

Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

Again, truly I tell you, if two of you agree on earth about anything you ask, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.”

Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

EL EVANGELIO San Mateo 18:15-20

Diáconoo Santo Evangelio de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, según San Mateo. Pueblo ¡Gloria a ti, Cristo Señor!

Si te hace caso, ya has ganado a tu hermano.

THE NICENE CREED

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE ANTHEM Charles V. Stanford

O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands: serve the Lord with gladness, and come before his presence with a song.

Be ye sure that the Lord he is God; it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise; be thankful unto him, and speak good of his Name. For the Lord is gracious, his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth from generation to generation.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be. World without end. Amen.

(Recorded 23 February 2020)

THE LORD’S PRAYER - Praying in the language of your heart.

Celebrant And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

People Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Notes on this morning’s music: Composer David Hurd (b. 1950) is a New York based concert organist, church musician, teacher, composer and choral conductor. Educated principally at the Juilliard School, Oberlin College, and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, he directed chapel music and taught at The General Theological Seminary for nearly four decades. He has also taught at Duke University, Yale University, The Manhattan School of Music, and Westminster Choir College. He has been director of music at The Church of the Holy Apostles, All Saints Church and The Church of the Intercession, and has served in various capacities in other New York churches. His musical accomplishments have been recognized with four honorary doctorates and various other national and international awards. In 2010 he was awarded the Distinguished Composer Award from the American Guild of Organists. Many of his compositions are widely performed, and he is well represented in major church hymnals in the US and abroad. The Gloria is from his hymnal mass setting New Plainsong. Carl W. Haywood, a native of Portsmouth, Virginia, is a cum laude graduate of Norfolk State University and a recipient of the Master of Sacred Music (organ) and Master of Music (choral conducting) degrees from Southern Methodist University. Dr. Haywood also received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California. In Lift Every Voice and Sing II: An African American Hymnal published by the Church Publishing Company of the Episcopal Church, Dr. Haywood who served as the Service Music Editor arranged/composed twenty-nine compositions. He is also the leading contributor to Wonder, Love, and Praise (supplement to the Episcopal hymnal.) from which this morning’s hymn “Heal me Hands of Jesus” is taken. Dr. Haywood is one of the leading church musicians in the field. For twenty-six years he served as organist/choir director at Grace Episcopal Church, Norfolk and has served on the Liturgical Commission for the Diocese of Southern Virginia, the Standing Commission on Liturgy and Music for the Episcopal Church of America and as Director of Music for the Union of Black Episcopalians. He has received commendations from the cities of Norfolk and Portsmouth, Virginia for his cultural contributions to citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia. He has also received awards from the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, the NAACP, and the National Association of Negro Musicians for his musical contributions and promotion of the music of African Americans. The South African Alleluia verse we have been singing in our online services was transcribed from oral tradition by Gobinga George Mxadana who was born in Soweto, Johannesburg, in 1948. The founder of the Imilonji KaNtu Choral Society with which he is synonymous, Mxadana has earned enormous respect for his achievements with the group. Most significantly, the choir led the indigenization of choir competition performance, in both song and dress. Mxadana was also the first black chairperson of the International Eisteddfod of South Africa. He is the chair of the Old Mutual/Telkom National Choir Festival, the deputy chair of the Arts and Culture Trust and a member of several music and cultural boards in South Africa. Mxadana grew up in a township community where music was a way of life. An altar boy during his youth, he was exposed to his love, church music, from an early age. He achieved a significant milestone in 1982 with the formation of the Imilonji KaNtu Choral Society. The choir, rooted in the South African struggle for democracy, provided comfort during the dark days of apartheid and joy in the transition to democracy. The choir actively supported democratic-movement organizations like unions, churches and civic groups, earning it the accolade “People’s Choir”.

Reddall. The diocese was established in 1959, and today has more than 60 congregations, several excellent primary schools, and four college chaplaincies. We focus on church growth and development, Spanish-speaking and Native American ministries, and welcoming the newcomer. The parishioners in our diocese are a vibrant group of believers making a difference in countless ways throughout the state.

We exist to encourage and connect leaders as they grow Christ’s church.
