PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Our Lady of the Annunciation Roman Catholic Parish is a people of living faith rooted in the Gospel, centered on the

Eucharist and led by the Holy Spirit. We are inspired by the example of Mary to continue the mission of Jesus Christ by ministering to all. Annunciation Parish Website: www.annunciationparishabq.org

From the Pastor

26TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The Liturgy speaks to us today about doing the heavenly Father’s will. Jesus uses the

example of two brothers, recorded in Matthew 21: 28-32, who are asked to work in the

Father’s vineyard. The first says no, but later reconsiders and actually does do the work.

The second says yes, but then does not do it. Which brother are we like? Perhaps we tell

God yes and pray to God and even sing God’s praises, but never do the Father’s will. On

the other hand, we might be like the first son who initially turns away from God, but later

recants and has a change of heart, which includes a change to a godly way of living and acting toward others. What is

really required for this conversion is the humility to admit our sins and an openness to allow the Holy Spirit to transform

us through the graces offered us by Jesus in the Church. Jesus, the sinless One, is the model of humility and obedience

to the Father as we read in St. Paul’s Letter to the Philippians 2:6-11: Though He was in the form of God, (Christ Jesus)

did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, He emptied himself, taking the form of a slave,

coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, He humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of

death, even death on a cross. With such an example of humility in our Savior, we can imitate Jesus, as Paul says in Phil.

2:3-4: Do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather humbly regard others as more important than yourselves,

each looking out not only for his own interests, but also for those of others. So let us ask God for the grace of humility

and obedience in the words of Psalm 25:4-5: Your ways, O Lord, make known to me; teach me your paths, guide me in

your truth and teach me, for You are God my savior.

RECOVERY SUNDAY

In many parts of our nation, today is known as Recovery Sunday. This is a day to pray for and

support those going through various forms of recovery–from loss, addiction, broken relationships and

so much more. Let us then reach out to heaven and earth with the prayer and encouragement every

soul needs today and each day as Heb. 3:13 reminds us to: Encourage each other daily while there is

still today!

DEACON CANDIDACY

I am pleased to announce that our parishioner Stan Sluder was admitted to Candidacy for the Diaconate by

Archbishop Wester on Thursday, Sept. 17th in Santa Fe. Please pray for Stan as he continues in a program of

formation leading up to Ordination as a Deacon just a few years away. Thank you, Stan, for heeding the call

of the Lord for service to the Church here at Annunciation Parish. God bless you! HUMAN DIGNITY AND PRAYER

FOR FAITHFUL CITIZENSHIP

When you consider the fact that the very first book of the Bible, Genesis 1:26-31, reveals that we are created in the

image and likeness of God, it would seem clear that we are to treasure each person as the handiwork of the Lord. Yet

the history of the world seems to point in the very opposite direction. The Second Vatican Council’s Document on the

Church in the Modern World, Gaudium et Spes, #27 states: Whatever insults human dignity, such as subhuman living

conditions, arbitrary imprisonment, deportation, slavery, prostitution, the selling of women and children; as well as

disgraceful working conditions, where men are treated as mere tolls for profit, rather than as free and responsible

persons; all these things and others of their like are infamies indeed. They poison human society, but they do more harm

to those who practice them than those who suffer from their injury. As we approach national, state and local elections in

the upcoming days we would do well to pray a Prayer for Faithful Citizenship:

Merciful Father, thank You for inviting each of us to join in your work of building the Kingdom of love, justice and

peace. Draw us close to You in prayer as we discern your call in our families and communities. Send us forth to

encounter all whom You love: those not yet born, those in poverty, those in need of welcome. Inspire us to respond to

the call to faithful citizenship, during election season and beyond. Help us to imitate your charity and compassion and

to serve as models of loving dialogue. Teach us to treat others with respect, even when we disagree, and seek to share

your love and mercy. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy

Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen (USCCB).
