Serving Breakfast to the Homeless at St. PaulEvery other month, our church prepares and serves breakfast for the homeless at St. Paul UMC in Denver. The 140 guests at St. Paul enjoyed a warm and hearty breakfast of burritos, fruit, juice, and coffee on Sunday, February 28, calling us the “burrito church.” On the previous day, Katie Vigil organized a crew that made 210 breakfast burri-tos. Then, a crew of church members traveled to Denver early Sunday morning to warm the burri-tos, and serve them with fruit and juice for a nutri-tious breakfast. Thanks to all of the Arvada UMC members who prepared the burritos and served the breakfast.

St. Paul’s is now serving a full breakfast on the last Sunday of the month. Arvada UMC will make bur-ritos again on Saturday, April 23rd, at 7:30am in the Center kitchen. The next day, members will finish preparing the food and then serve the break-fast. Sign-up boards will go up in April. Join by adding your name on the signup sheet or contact-ing Katie Vigil at [email protected].

The cost for the food we serve every other month comes from the Faith in Action Hunger Fund. If you would like to donate tothis fund, please indicate“FIA Hunger Fund” on thememo line of your checkto Arvada UMC.

Theology ofOptimisticPathologyThe Positivein Powerful ThoughtSunday, April 3, 11:15amReverend Charles Schuster invites us to be in conversation about how we can rethink our understanding of God in a way that enables us to celebrate the good times and find meaning when life is difficult. This session will include poetry, theology, life experience, humor, story and irony. Contact: Deb Williams, 303-421-5135, [email protected] for more information.

Fellowship Groups have a long tradition in the church, helping people get con-nected and stay connected. They offer natural support and a sense of community. Some AUMC “Units” have been meeting for 4 decades. The groups are made of 8-15 people in similar life phases and they usually meet monthly for a variety of activities. AUMC is currently reigniting these groups and we welcome your participation. Two new groups are currently forming for parents of children. This small group of families with children isplanning two future events and has ideas formany more. We are flexible with members and encourage you to show up as you are able. In April concluding April 17 we will be workingon Pinwheels for Ralston House. In May, wewill be working on a book drive service event. Ending May 22, we will be collecting anddelivering books to the Denver Channel “Books for Kids.” Upcoming events will include more social events with kids & their families. In November & December we will coordinate with the Faith in Action Committee to support families in our community over the holiday season.

Questions? Contact Shannon Ousterhout [email protected] or 303-929-0542.

A second group focused on social activities for families with pre-school children will meet. Please contact Valerie Oden ([email protected]) if you are interested in this group. A third group for families with elementary children built around social activities is also up and running.

We will continue creating new groups for people in various life phases, not just families withchildren, so it would be helpful to know your interest. Please contact Valerie to be part of a new Fellowship Group. Let’s get connected!

Again this year, AUMC will sponsora pinwheel garden to support thechildren in the community who havesuffered abuse as well as efforts tokeep children safe from abuse. Your$5 donation will plant a pinwheel inour garden, which will be a visiblereminder of our support to all who pass by. Watch for more details about how you can support this effort.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

For the past three years, many volunteershave greeted, cooked, served, cleaned upand provided desserts for the freeNeighborhood Meal on the 2nd Wednesday of each month in the Center. Our head cooks, Irv and Elaine Levy, plan all the menus, shop and oversee the cooking of delicious and nutritious meals. The greeters welcome all who come; the servers load up the plates and put together extra food boxes for folks to take to others or just enjoy at home; the clean-up folks wash all the dishes, pots and pans, put away tables and chairs and sweep. Just in the last year, the Arvada Meridian has been providing salad and Covenant Village has begun providing desserts. We thank them for that support and donation.

Some of the folks from the neighborhood are struggling with job loss, low incomes, insufficient food budgets, loneliness, illnesses. We have journeyed with parents and couples who have lost their jobs, struggled with addiction issues, need a little help with food at the end of the month; with aging singles living alone, grandpar-ents taking care of grandchildren on low incomes, people disabled. There are usually 60 to 80 people eating with us each month including the 18 volunteers needed and church folks who want to join in the fellowship and hospitality (and eat a delicious meal.)

Thank you to all those of volunteers and to AUMC for the financial support needed to make this meal happen. We are truly attending to the needs of the least and most vulnerable among us as we walk in the way of Jesus.

Description: From Alain de Botton, on Ted.com: “One of the most common ways of dividing the world is into those who believe and those who don’t –into the religious and the atheists. And for the last decade or so, it’s been quite clear what being an atheist means…what I’d like to inaugu-rate today is a new way of being an atheist– if you like, a new version of atheism we could call Atheism 2.0. Come and listen to this 15 minute Ted Talk and we’ll discuss what we’ve heard!

Each Sunday we have 10-12 adults who havethe very important job of teaching, supervising, guiding, supporting and encouraging our AUMC kids. They are the most important part ofmaking our programs work effectively. I wouldlike to thank every person who has worked with our children & youth… you are all very specialpeople that we appreciate SO much. When: WednesdaysMarch 30-May18(eight weeks), 7pmWhere: In the ChapelWhat to bring: Please purchase your own copy of the book, The Soul of a Pilgrim: Eight Practices for the Journey Within by Christine Valters Paintner before March 30.Read the introduction and firstchapter before the first class.Questions: Call Rev. Sharon McCormick at 303-422-0932

One of our favorite authors, Christine Valters Paintner, has created a new book that invites us to make a per-sonal pilgrimage within ourselves. Paintner’s creative spiritual prac-tices will provide us with guidance and inspiration for traveling inward. Complimented by the scriptural reflec-tions of Paintner’s husband, John, and her own creative poetry, this book takes the reader on a journey of dis-covery that has the potential to change the direction of one’s life.

Women’s Spiritual Journey

Spring Study: The Soul of a Pilgrim

Daring Greatly

You know the sensation as well as I do: someone asks “How are you?” Inside, we may be roaring or tumbling or cry-ing or even giggling with glee, and yet what comes out of our mouths is, “I’m fine thanks, and you?” In that brief moment, we cover who we are. We hide our authentic selves and miss out on a chance for meaningful connection.

I am not suggesting that we unroll a litany of complaints in that moment. I am suggesting that there may be an authentic way to respond that invites real connection, and part of being ina faith community is seeking realconnection together.

Dr. Brené Brown has spent 12 years exploring vulnerability in human beings and has come to see it as a path-way to purpose and meaning. She says that living with courage starts with

showing up and letting ourselves be seen.

I invite you to join me on a journey toward more meaningful connection, exploring what it means to “show up.” We will read Daring Greatly together and see what resonates and what doesn’t; we’ll talk about where she asks us to go too far out of our comfort zone and what it would mean to follow her path toward wholeness.

Join us Tuesdays at 7:00 pm beginningApril 5th for a 5-week study of the book Daring Greatly. And if you can’t make the class, I encourage you to read it anyway, or go to Tedtalks and search for the author’s talk. It may just be yet another re-start in living in the grace of God.

Peace,

Valerie’s Reveries

“Vulnerability is the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, courage, empathy, and creativity. It is the source of hope, empathy, accountability, and authenticity. If we want greater clarity in our purpose or deeper and more meaningful spiritual lives, vulnerability is the path.”

How the courage to be vulnerable transformsthe way we live, love, parent, and lead. by Brené Brown

Helping Others with Grocery Cards

Faith Based AdvocacyThe Social Principles of The United Methodist Church state, “the strength of a political system depends upon the full and willing par-ticipation of its citizens.” As people of faith and concerned citizens, we are called to speak from our perspective in the public sphere, perhaps at city council and school board meetings, or with our elect-ed officials at the national, state and local level. We also serve on city, county and state commissions and boards, vote in all elections, write letters to the editor, and sign petitions. Check out these web sites for information on some of these possibilities. www.arvada.org/government, www.jeffcopublicschools.org, www.leg. state.co.us.

There are a few bills before the Colorado Legislature this month of interest to faith communities as we seek to speak on behalf of the least and most vulnerable in society. Please check the website listed above to carefully read these bills and contact your representatives if you have concerns and opinions.

HB 1050 Low Income Parents Education Child Care Realizing that parental education and income directly impacts child success in school, this bill focuses on supporting low income parents in pursuing more education. The bill calls for establishing a task force charged with evaluating the best way for state agencies to coordi-nate to address the child care needs of low-income parents of young children who wish to advance their education. The bill passed out of committee and has been sent to the appropriations committee.

HB 1278 Residential Drug Treatment for Probationers Currently, the court may only recommend residential drug treatment for peo-ple convicted of a drug offense. This bill would expand the ability of the court to recommend any person to participate in residential drug treatment as a condition of probation. This would allow per-sons with addictions to get help no matter what the offense.

HB1006 Clarify Tax Exempt For Housing Authority Clarifies that public housing authorities are exempt from sales tax on construction materials. Passed onto appropriations commitee.

SB 102 Repeal Certain Mandatory Minimum Prison Sentences Removes mandatory minimum sentences for certain types of 2nd degree assault and for violating bail bond conditions. Would require case-by-case decisions from judges to insure just and fair decisions.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) partners with local organi-zations to provide simple supplies, such as a space heater, hygiene kits, mattresses, blankets, and coverlets, as well as soap, diapers, and sanitary pads. Over $500,000 was spentlast year and the support continues for the ever increasing number of refugees.

$250 for Kenyan Orphanage Poultry Project The orphanage that Arvada UMC has teamed with is looking for opportunities

to become more self-sufficient. This donation will allow them to purchase a chicken for each of the orphans, along with supplies to house and feed the chickens. Eggs produced from the chickens will be used to feed the orphans and surplus eggs will be sold in the local market for other supplies. If you would like to provide additional funding for the orphanage, make your checks to Arvada UMC and put Kenya Project on the memo line.

$200 for the St. Paul Homeless Breakfast Program Six times each year, AUMC provides a wholesome meal in a welcoming atmosphere to people who are homeless in Denver. A need for paper goods for the program at St. Paul was identified, and this money will be used topurchase plates, napkins, and utensils.

Stop by the Center any Sunday morning after church and pick up a rechargeable grocery card for $10. You can add to the $10 already on the card the next time you shop; just add the money before you check out. For those who wish to purchase grocery cards to give to others, $25one-time cards are also available.

President’s Greeting:April Showers Bring May Flowers... Following the uplifting joy of the Lenten and Easter Season, together we begin again with a fresh start, a greater spiritual awareness and a renewed purpose in searching for personal meaning in our lives. You may experience this in solitude or in community. UMW offers multiple spiritual retreat opportunities as we move into spring. Notice the titles of these conferences or retreats: Spiritual Life Retreat: Holy Fools for Christ, Spiritual Day Together: Your Road Well Traveled, and the Western Jurisdiction Quadrennial: A Fresh Wind is Blowing. The season of spring brings with it the promise of new life, and the renewal of all that has been lying dormant over the cold winter months. May the seeds sown during a time of spiritual renewalblossom in your life in the coming months.

A Note of Thanks! Following the uplifting joy of the Lenten and Easter Season, together we begin again with a fresh start, a greater spiritual awareness and a renewed purpose.

Ginny Dunkelberger, AUMW President
