    From Fr. Toms Desk

    AN INVITATION TO A GRACED

MOMENTToday is the feast of St.

Philip. His icon appears on thefront of our bulletin. He was afriend of the First-Called St. Andrew, and was introduced toJesus by him. The whole event isrecorded in the 1st chapter of St.Johns Gospel. Philip had foundsomething he was searching forthroughout his life when he metJesus, and he wanted to share this wonderful experience with his

friend Nathaniel. At first, he wasrebuffed. Nathaniel was suspicious, amost cynical. He responded toPhilip something like this, A Jesusof Nazareth! You have to bekidding, could anything great evercome from Nazareth? Nazareth was a back-water, no-account

village. It was a place hardly worthmentioning. Philip was not put off.He urged his friend, Come and seefor yourself.Because of Philip, a graced momentwas about to happen in Nathanielslife. St. Philips day is special in the

Church Calendar. It begins theperiod known as the St PhilipsFast, or as Pylypiwka. It is a timeset apart for prayer and fasting inpreparation for the Celebration ofthe Lords Nativity. We do not havea period known as Advent, whichappears in the Latin Rite. It israther a season I would like to callcome and see for yourself. This isthe beginning of a time of grace and

for new spiritual awareness asChristmas approaches. So, this is afast time? Maybe for some peoplethis is the last thing in the worldone might expect. This time has been greatly mitigated; the fast isnow called a voluntary one. That

being said, I hope it will not betotally ignored. Yes, sacred time begins tomorrow. One of the great challenges thatEastern Church Christians have is

how to live out our religious andspiritual traditions in this modern,post-Christian atmosphere within which we live. It is very difficultliving in a society that is on anotherpage then us.There is the temptation to fit in.Often I hear the remark that because Roman Catholics dont doit, why should we? We do not live ina vacuum, and it is difficult to live

out the spirituality of ourChurch is here in the United States. Yet, the Holy Father has calledupon us to hold on to the spiritualpractices that have been handeddown to us. Having said that, I would like to promote a fewthoughts on fasting during thistime of the year.I have just finished a book on theimportance of fasting as it ispracticed in many religioustraditions throughout the world.Fasting is described as, aninvitation to still the noise andlisten to the silence, to cut theclutter and see the order, and toslide beneath what is superficialand trivial to touch what is worthwhile and lasting. Note the words: invitation to still the noise

[] listen [] cut the clutter [] get beneath the superficial and trivial[] touch what is worth while andlasting. So this Fast is, first of all, aninvitation to a time of special grace. Its the kind of invitation that Philipoffered when he said, Come and

see. No, it does not oblige underpain of sin. It is a sacred time thathas a lot of noise and busyness inthe background. Those of you whoknow me know that I frequently

call noise and busyness some of ourmajor spiritual killers. Maybe a bitof daily quiet time out of the daywould be good spiritual exercise.Cut the clutter. The trivial andsuperficial often invade our lives. Whats really going on in my life? What really counts? Is my lifecluttered with trivial nonsense? ThePhilip Fast is a time for spiritualhousecleaning. There are many

worthwhile and important things inour lives that often take a second orthird place. In his rule on fasting, St. Benedict wrote, Nothing is moreinconsistent with the life of aChristian as overindulgence. Weare often weighed down with toomuch eating, working, leisure, TV,and Krispy-Kremes. You can fill in your own too much list. We allneed to fast from something inorder to open our minds to spiritualvalues. The Philip Fast is a time to turnaway from self-absorbed actions tofocus on deeper ideas. It is a timeto refocus everyday priorities andawaken our awareness to thepresence of God in our lives and theneeds of others.

Come, O faithful! Inspire by God,let us go to see the divine mercythat is revealed in Bethlehem. Letus cleanse our minds and offer virtues in our lives instead ofmyrrh. Let us prepare with faith toenter the feast of Nativity, storingup treasure in our souls as we sing
