JUNIOR CHOIR: “Let there Be Peace on Earth”; Words and Music by Sy Miller and Jill Jackson

Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me. Let there be peace on earth, the peace that was meant to be. With God as our Father, family all are we. Let me walk with each other in perfect harmony.

Let peace begin with me, let this be the moment now. With ev'ry step I take let this be my solemn vow; To take each moment and live each moment in peace eternally. Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.

(Children may go to Sunday School)

SCRIPTURE READING: Mark 12:38-44 (read by Sonja Lundstrom)

ANTHEM: “The World of Our Dreams” Text and Music: Jeffrey Ames; Solo: Sarah Cory; Oboe: Caitlin Broms-Jacobs

There is a day I long to see, when we will live in perfect peace; When war and strife no longer reign, and kingdoms of hatred cease; Where freedom rings for every soul, and love is shown to all. Can you dream a world for our future? Can you dream within your heart?

It is a world without distress, the God of peace is there; He wipes away all tearful eyes, He banishes every care; The joys within this world are full, the songs are ever new. Can this be our world in the future? If you dream within your heart!

Dream of a world and lift your eyes to glorious visions in the skies. Oh, trust in faith and by His hand, we shall reach our promised land.

There are times in our world where it appears oppression rules; The hopes and dreams of burdened hearts become shattered jewels; The hollow pain from deep within; can nothing subdue this heartache?

How long will we mourn for this world? My spirit is faint as I see the faces of death. Yet arise, my soul and stretch thy wings. Arise my soul and live the dream!

The world I dream will meet the needs of every living soul; It reaches from the highest star to the dark depths below; Within my world are days of hope, of peace and harmony.

May this dream for ever live, and become reality. Dream a world within your heart.

POSTLUDE: First Movement from Concerto in C for 2 trumpets—A. Vivaldi (Caitlin Broms-Jacobs, oboe & Dean Pollard, trumpet)

The Anthem this Week

Long a favorite children’s song, ‘Let there be peace on earth” was written by husband and wife musicians, Sy Miller and Jill Jackson while working with an international children’s chorus in California in 1955.

American composer, Jeffrey Ames, wrote both the text and music for this anthem, composed in 2009. The sweeping melody and the use of the oboe solo both heighten the sorrow that war brings, and the unbound-ed optimism reflected in the text. In the middle of the piece, the soprano soloist reflects at first the despair she feels, and then a determination to dream for a better tomorrow. The choir then affirms this possibility in the closing measures, exhorting us to “Dream a world within your heart”.
