Always in the Savior, Fr. Joe

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

This past week has been a great one. It seemed to be a time to reach out and begin new things. The seniors group Fun with Friends got off to a great start by going to see the play Death by Design at the VBC. The Meet and Greet get-together of young married couples went very well with a great deal of excite-ment. The Knights of Peter Claver and Ladies Auxiliary attracted a large group to their information session to learn more about the group’s work. Holy Family School as well at St. Joseph Religious Education is gearing up for another great year. St. Joseph parish is on the move. God is certainly blessing the many efforts that are being made to not only preach the Gospel, but to live the Gospel. I like to think of it as not just hearing the Good News, but being the Good News. So, congratulations to you all. This weekend, we have the Knights of Columbus who will be sharing their vision for the parish after each of the Masses in the chapel. In the coming weeks, our Adult Religious Education will unveil its new offerings. So, stay tuned to see what is happening here at St. Joseph. It has been just a few weeks since the Eucharistic Congress in Birmingham and the call for Mis-sionary Disciples. As we think about the invitation, let us also think about what the first step might be. In order to evangelize others, we must evangelize ourselves. You can’t give what you don’t have. Here is a little something I found on the Archdiocese of Vancouver website to chew on. Enjoy.

What is Evangelization?

'FATHER…this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.' 'God our Savior desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.' 'There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved' – than the name of JESUS.' Catechism of the Catholic Church – Prologue Evangelization means to fulfill the missionary mandate of Jesus Christ, who commanded us to “Go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:18). “The transmission of the Christian faith consists primarily in proclaiming Jesus Christ in order to lead others to faith in him. From the beginning, the first disciples burned with the desire to proclaim Christ: 'We cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard' (Acts of the Apostles 4:20). And they invite people of every era to enter into the joy of their communion with Christ.' Catechism of the Catholics Church 425

Who is Responsible for Evangelization? Every baptized person: “To teach in order to lead others to faith is the task of every preacher and of each believer.” St. Thomas Aquinas

What is the Role of Evangelization in the Overall Life of the Church? “The Church in her very nature is missionary, sent by Christ to all nations to make disciples of them.” Catechism of the Catholic Church 767 “Evangelization is in fact the grace and vocation proper to the Church, her deepest identity, she exists in order to evangelize.” Pope Paul VI, Evangelii Nuntiandi, 14 “The pilgrim Church is missionary by her very nature, since it is from the mission of the Son and the mission of the Holy Spirit that she draws her origin, in accordance with the decree of God the Father.” Vatican Council II, Ad Gentes, 2 “It is the duty of the Church to proclaim always and everywhere the Gospel of Jesus Christ…” Pope Benedict XVI, Apostolic Letter Ubicumque et Semper establishing the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization

You are in my thoughts and my prayers. May God bless you with the very best.
