    Mass Readings and Intentions

  • FROM FATHER TERRY J+M+J

I hope you are having a blessed Christmas. I believe that we all needed Christmas in a special way this year. We had to be reminded of the love, peace, hope, and joy of the Christ Child. Today we conclude the Christmas season with the Solemnity of the Baptism of the Lord. Before beginning his public ministry, Jesus is baptized by St. John the Baptist in the Jordan River. The Catechism of the Catholic Church tells us, “The baptism of Jesus is on his part the acceptance and inauguration of his mission as God’s suffering Servant.” (536) Does not the word MISSION stand out for you? Jesus was on a mission! Through our Baptism in the Christ Child, we too are on a mission. What is our mission? To carry the Christ Child in our arms and carry his love, peace, hope, and joy to the world. Everybody needs a mission. We have one. Stay close to the Christ Child and make everyday Christmas!

In thinking of Baptism, I am sometimes approached by family members who are concerned that children in their immediate or extended families are not baptized. One or both parents may be Catholic but, for whatever reason, they have not yet had their children baptized. We need to pray that the parents say yes to Baptism. Also, let us carry the Christ Child in our arms to inspire parents to baptize their children. Finally, we can, on occasion, gently remind the parents of the beauty and importance of Baptism.

Congratulations on our one year anniversary as a parish. We officially became a parish on January 6 of last year. what a year it has been. I believe that we have come together as a parish family on so many levels. We have united in our friendships, councils, ministries, programs, social events, and fundraising. We have done a lot of this through COVID! Amazing! The challenges that we have faced together will serve to bring us closer together. The best is yet to come! Mary, Mother of God, pray for us. Congratulations on one year!

Drum roll please. I am happy to announce that we will officially be moving into our new Parish Center on Tuesday, January 19. Therefore, beginning on the 19th, all parish business will be conducted out of the Parish Center, located immediately below St. Angela Church. We ask that you access the center at the main entrance which is to the left of the main school entrance, next to the large Mary statue (a good sign). If you are attending daily Mass, you can also access the center via the elevator. The parish address, phone number, and emails will all remain the same. I congratulate all of you on your generous efforts to make the center a reality. It is incredible and I know that you will love it! It will surely help us in spreading the Gospel and unite us as a parish. This is our collective center, Mary, Mother of God Parish. I will have much more to say about the center in next week’s bulletin.

As we conclude our Christmas season, I thank all those who had a hand in making our Christmas liturgies so beautiful. I hope all of you had a blessed season. I am happy to say that I sure did! I also thank those who decorated, our churches looked spectacular. We further thank those who generously made flower donations. Poinsettias are free for the taking after the last Masses this weekend at each of our churches.

Friday, January 22, is the 48th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in the U. S. Since this Supreme Court decision, there have approximately 63 million abortions performed in the U.S. alone. Currently, there are about 2,400 abortions each day in the U.S. According to the U.S. Bishops, January 22 “shall be observed as a particular day of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion, and of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life” (GIRM, n.373). Forms of penance can include such things as fasting, self-denial, charitable works, peaceful

protests, voting for pro-life candidates, giving to pro-life causes and candidates, and standing up for life in daily conversation. In regard to the 22nd, there will be a variety of opportunities for you to stand up for life. First, the 8:30 a.m. daily Mass on the 22nd will be for life. Second, we will have an in person and livestreamed Holy Hour for Life on the 22nd at St. Angela from 4 – 5 p.m. Finally, the U.S. bishops have launched “9 Days for Life” from January 21-29. This is a program calling for prayer, penance, and pilgrimage. Please visit www.9daysforlife.com for more details.

Over the years, I have proudly helped in leading groups to the March for Life in Washington, D.C. to peacefully protest abortion. At the time of this writing, the March is scheduled for Friday, January 29, 2021. However, due to the pandemic, I have elected not to be a part of leading a group to the March this year. I invite you to watch the March on EWTN, beginning at 9:30 a.m. May we truly be a culture of life. Next weekend, January 16-17, we will have the annual second collection for the St. Anthony School Programs and the DePaul School for Hearing and Speech. We have St. Anthony School Programs right here at Mary of Nazareth. I point out that this collection off-sets our Parish Share Programs. That is, the amount we collect will be deducted dollar for dollar from our Parish Share goals. Please be as generous as possible to these collections which help children with various disabilities. Details are in the bulletin.

St. Clare was designated as the patron saint of television by

A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM ST. ANTHONY SCHOOL PROGRAMS AND DEPAUL SCHOOL FOR HEARING AND SPEECH:

A new year is upon us and we are so grateful to have the opportunity to share a bit about our programs and to work together once again. This weekend has been designated for the special collection to benefit St. Anthony School Programs and DePaul School for Hearing and Speech. On behalf of our students and staff, we can’t thank you enough for supporting these invaluable programs that benefit many members of our Diocese.

St. Anthony’s and DePaul both fill a necessary role for special education within the Diocese of Pittsburgh. St. Anthony School Programs offers an inclusive education to children ages 5-21 years with special needs and DePaul School for Hearing and Speech teaches children, birth to 14 years, who are deaf or hard of hearing to listen, speak, and learn. Both programs empower students to become active and contributing members of their respective communities.

Any help you can give is deeply appreciated and makes a tremendous impact on the students we serve, as well as their families. Our fundraising efforts have been greatly impacted by the pandemic, so again, any support you are able to give means so much. Thank you for your time and God bless.
