Still Loving There are many ways to
remember your loved ones and to give some-
thing back to God at the same time. Many
people do so through donations for
1. Mass intentions, or 2. the bread and wine for
Mass, or 3. The sanctuary candles that burn to
indicate Christ’s presence in the tabernacle, or 4.
the Tree of Life . The tree is a beautiful way to
memorialize a loved one or loved ones, living or de-
ceased. For information, please call the rectory at
718-761-6663.
IN LOVING MEMORY
Why not donate the bread and wine
used for the Masses during the week
for a special intention of someone liv-
ing, or in memory of someone who
has passed on? Call the rectory 718-761-6663.
This week’s intention is on page 2.

HOW TO FIND JOY IN LENT
GIVE GLOOM AND DOOM A REST!
“When you fast,” Jesus advises His followers, “do
not look gloomy like the hypocrites. They neglect their
appearance, so that they may appear to others to be fast-
ing…..but when you fast, anoint your head and wash your
face, so that you may not appear to be fasting...and your
Father who sees what is hidden will repay you” (Matthew
6:16-18).
Lent is not meant to be a season of depression and
death but one for nurturing hope and new life. Franciscan
theologian and author Francis Baur puts it this way: “Lent
is not an end to itself….Lent is a stepping stone to and
preparation for something else, and that something else is
Easter…..the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus
Christ. Traditionally, Lent has been rightly viewed as a
time of preparation. It is, however, not a preparation for
death but always and only a preparation for life”.
Father Baur sees no reason “why the time of prepa-
ration for this most exhilarating of mysteries should be
morose or sad or life denying.” As another Catholic Up-
date has pointed out, Lent originally developed as a “40-
day retreat before Baptism,” that is, a preparation period
for converts who would receive the new life of Baptism
during the Easter Vigil ceremonies. Certainly, the focus of
our Lenten journey is nothing other than that wonderful
new life! That is God’s wish for us.
Why not increase your capacity for joy by giving up the
things that force joy out of your soul?
Give up resentment, and become more forgiving.
Give up hatred and return good for evil.
Give up complaining and be more grateful.
Give up pessimism and become more hopeful.
Give up worry and become more trusting.
Give up anger and become more patient.
Give up pettiness and become more noble.
Give up gloom and become more joyful.
OUR LENTEN VIDEOS
There is no better way to strengthen our faith
than to take advantage of all our Lenten offer-
ings. Starting Monday, February 23 at 7pm in
the Church basement, we will present Rev. Rob-
ert Baron’s video on Jesus Christ: Priest,
Prophet/King. It is deeply biblical and filmed in
High Definition. Join us for a stunning presenta-
tion. — EVERY MONDAY AT 7PM!

FROM THE BOROUGH PRESIDENT
Last Fall, we released BP Assist, our of-
fice’s mobile app, available to iPhone and An-
droid device users. This app is allowing constit-
uents to instantly report problems directly to us
from their smartphone. So, if you are walking
and see a streetlight out, you will have the ability
to instantly report the problem to us without
making a single phone call.
The technology is exciting, but our app is
so much more than that. We are turning it into a
hub of information about Staten Island to be
used by residents and visitors to our borough.
Some examples of information include upcom-
ing events, the ferry schedule, and important
phone numbers. Downloading this app will even
allow you to receive important notifications
about emergencies, traffic conditions, and other
important issues. For more information, you can
visit statenislandusa.com/bpassist.
