INTO THE MOUNTAINS
Getting power across any landscape is a big challenge, but imagine building
lines through the mountains of the Kanawha Valley in West Virginia. In fact,
some of the existing lines have structures that were built almost a century
ago. In definite need of an upgrade, Appalachian Power is undertaking a
massive venture headed by Senior Transmission Construction Representative
Tim Clemons. His team of 100 people are spending six days a week for two
years upgrading the system with new structures to help ensure
reliability for customers for the next century. It goes to
show no matter how huge the task, our employees
are prepared to take it on. We may be a power
company, but the true power in our communities
comes from our people.

Live” cast member Ar-misen, himself a musician, are longtime friends.
Also on hand this dayfor idea-swapping and alunchtime game of bas-ketball — an outside hoopis the big perk — are writ-ers Alice Mathias, GrahamWagner and Karen Kilgariff. But the script that emergesis only the beginning ofwhat viewers ultimatelysee, a “loose blueprint”for filming in Portland, asKrisel puts it.
“The shooting becomesour rewriting ... because it’sso heavily improvised,” hesaid in an interview. “Andthat’s kind of the secret ofthe show, that once you’vegot this simple premiseand you’ve brainstormed itand written it, then on theday [of taping] you can justhave fun with it.”
He compares the showto an art project, such asa painting or sculpture, which ultimately finds itsown final shape.
“You don’t try to micro-manage it,” Krisel said. Ex-cept, it seems, in the edit-ing room, where the goalis to cobble together thevery best, “laugh-out-loudfunny moments” out of themany takes done for eachsegment. That can evenrequire a “Portlandia” ver-sion of computer-gener-ated special effects, such asmoving coffee cups aroundto preserve continuity.
“The end goal is to makea piece that everybody hasownership over and every-body’s proud of becauseeverybody contributed toit. I think there’s a commu-nist, socialist vibe to ‘Port-landia’ to make it work,”Krisel said, with a laugh.
