THE LIST OF THE PRIESTS OF THE PATERSON DIOCESE

CREDIBLY ACCUSED OF SEXUAL ABUSE

This past Wednesday, the five Catholic dioceses that are located in New Jersey issued simultaneous

statements to report the names of priests and deacons who have been credibly accused of the sexual

abuse of minors since 1937. Since the founding of our Diocese in 1937, 27 priests and 1 deacon

have been credibly accused of sexual abuse. I encourage you to visit the website of the Diocese of

Paterson to read Bishop Serratelli’s report to the priests, deacons, the religious, and the laity of the

Diocese and to view the names of the priests and deacons who have been credibly accused in the past

82 years. For your information, all of the men who have been credibly accused are no longer in-

volved in ministry. All are dead or have been removed from active ministry as priests or deacons.

A LIFE GIVING AND LIFE CHANGING MISSION

THIS WEDNESDAY AT 7 PM IN THE CHURCH

Parish missions are a normal part of Lent in most places. This

Wednesday, we will offer a one night mission for the parish. Our pre-

senter will be Andre Lesperance of Evangelical Catholic. Andre will

open for us the meaning of the story in Luke’s Gospel of the visit of

Jesus to the home of His friends, Martha, Mary and Lazarus, as well as

the meaning of Jesus’ teaching to the three siblings about what is most

important in the life of a disciple. Jesus’ teaching will present us with

the foundation of our joint celebration of the season of Lent in the parish this year. I hope that you

all will make an effort to be with us this Wednesday evening.

The Mission begins at 7 pm in the church. The Mission will include a teaching and prayer. Pizza

will be served at 6:30 pm for those who are coming directly from work or school. Childcare is avail-

able for families.

I hope to see you this Wednesday!

OUR PILGRIMAGE TO POLAND THIS MAY

It’s not too late to register for our parish pilgrimage to the Catholic shrines of Poland, May 13 to 20.

Brochures are available in the church and the Parish Center.

God bless.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

February 17-March 3

First Congregational Church of Chester (FCCC) will

host homeless families of Morris County enrolled in

the Family Promise Program.

FCCC is a small congregation and they need support

from St. Lawrence parish, especially since this time they

host the families for two weeks.

St. Lawrence Church supports this effort with volunteers

to:

• Set up facility for the families

• Clean up daily

• Provide dessert and/or dinner

• Host guests for one shift (sitting in the common

room, being available, helping kids with homework,

playing with them)

• Stay overnight

This is a wonderful opportunity for individuals or fami-

lies to get involved. If you are doing this for the first

time, training is available (not required, but helpful). If

you are interested in helping, please contact Beatrice

Basso at 973-294-4059.

TRAVELING MARY

Our “Traveling Mary” is a statue of Our Lady of Fatima

which will spend the week in your home. We are asking

that families/individuals say the rosary during that week.

Along with the statue are some pamphlets on how to say

the Rosary, a DVD for younger children and some rosary

beads for you to use. Please contact the Faith Formation

Office (908-879-6714) if you are interested.

HOMEBOUND OR HOSPITALIZED

Please notify our priests if you know of someone who is

homebound or hospitalized. Many would appreciate a

visit and the opportunity to receive Communion. Thank

you for helping us help others in our community.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

In recent years, there has been remarkable progress in

drawing persons with disabilities into full celebration.

Now it is generally accepted that worship places need

accommodations such as ramps or elevators, large-print

materials for those who are sight-impaired, and perhaps

even an assisted hearing system or signing in American

Sign Language. American Sign Language is not merely

English translated into movement, but a distinct language

with its own grammar, syntax (word order), and vocabu-

lary. For this reason, the American Catholic bishops have

approved American Sign Language (ASL) as an official

language of the liturgy.

Celebrating liturgy in our own language (the vernacular)

means that liturgy must be accessible to all languages

and cultures. The fact that Mass is celebrated this week-

end in some places in total silence, but with the full par-

ticipation of deaf people praising God in the movements

of their hands, and sometimes even with a priest who is

deaf, is nothing less than the Church being faithful to the

image of Jesus, who made the deaf hear and the mute

speak. Remember too that deafness is an invisible disa-

bility, and that there may well be people in your parish

who are quietly yearning for Mass to be signed for them

in ASL.

were assembled by the Good Samaritans and students,

TITHING IS GOD’S PLAN FOR GIVING.

Biblically a tithe means 10%. All are asked to consider

tithing and return 10% of our income to the Lord (5% to

the parish, 5% to God’s other charities) in gratitude. The

spiritual practice of tithing disposes us to make God first

in every area of our lives! The aim is to secure not the

tithe, but the tither. Not the gift, but the giver — for God!

Tithing Income February 10, 2019 $12,150.00

Tithing Income February 11, 2018 $10,587.00

Reflection: “Blessed are you when people hate you,…

exclude and insult you, and denounce your name…on

account of the Son of Man.” (Luke 6:22)

All of us have been in situations when someone has made

a negative comment or joke about God or our Catholic

faith. How did you respond? Did you stay silent or pre-

tend to go along with the crowd because you didn’t want

to cause waves and then, later, you felt bad? Know that

God is with you all the time; the Holy Spirit will put the

right words in your mouth. Pray for the strength and cour-

age to proclaim our faith to others, especially during un-

comfortable situations.

From Father Nick: “Once again I thank you sincerely

for the sacrifices that you make out of love for God and

for the support of God’s work in our parish!”

A Testimony by a Parishioner of St. Columba Parish

in Bloomsburg, PA: “With tithing, we also are teaching

our children that they, too, have an obligation to give

back to God and be thankful for all that is given to them

with their hands, hearts and monies.”

BLESSED

When we think of the word “Beatitude” we think of to-

day’s discourse from Luke’s Gospel, or the more familiar

one from Matthew (which begins “Blessed are the poor in

spirit . . . ”). Actually, beatitudes occur throughout the

prophets and Gospels. Today in Jeremiah (with an echo

in the psalm) we hear, “Blessed is the one who trusts in

the Lord” (Jeremiah 17:7). Following His resurrection in

John’s Gospel, Christ proclaims, “Blessed are those who

have not seen and have believed” (John 20:29). The

evangelists placed these sayings throughout the Gospels

as short reminders about the characteristics that one will

find in a follower of Christ, characteristics that will help

spread the Good News in this life and lead to eternal

blessings in the next. In Latin, the saints are called the

Beati, the “Blessed,” for they are the ones who lived the

“blessed” life as described by Jesus throughout the Gos-

pels. How blest are we, when we also strive to make our

own days a living beatitude!

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The one who trusts in the LORD is like

a tree planted beside the waters (Jeremiah 17:5-8).

Psalm — Blessed are they who hope in the Lord (Psalm 1).

Second Reading — Christ has been raised from the dead,

the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep

(1 Corinthians 15:12, 16-20).

Gospel — Blessed are you who are poor, hungry, weep-

ing. Woe to you who are rich, filled, laughing

(Luke 6:17, 20-26).
