It’s February and we’re wrapping up our 2013 Community Report. We hope you, as an investor in WOSU Public Media, will take a few minutes to review it. Looking back, it was a year that certainly reflected our mission to educate, inform, entertain, and inspire.

Our educational efforts in central Ohio classrooms received national recognition; a collaboration called Surge Columbus was unveiled; we developed a new smartphone and tablet app to expand our audience; and we celebrated notable successes in planned giving and membership with passionate listeners and viewers deciding to include WOSU in their estate plans and join us as sustained givers.

Aside from popular programming from national sources such as PBS and NPR—Downton Abbey, Antiques Roadshow, Morning Edition, Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!, Performance Today and much more—we’ve been quite productive locally.

Columbus Neighborhoods: South Side premiered as did a highly successful pledge special on the Neighborhoods; a documentary on the life of John Glenn aired and will be distributed on PBS stations across the country; a new arts and culture series Broad & High premiered on WOSU TV; Columbus on the Record and All Sides with Ann Fisher continued to bring thoughtful, important information to our community; In the Know kicked off its 31st year; our 89.7 NPR News Team once again was named the #1 radio news operation in Ohio; Classical 101 premiered new programming—Fretworks, The American Sound, By Request, Columbus in Concert and new podcasts; and we so enjoyed christening the Anne Melvin Classical Music Studio.

This just touches the surface. Please review the WOSU Public Media community report when it’s available mid-month at wosu.org. We print a limited number, but copies will be available in our lobby. Thanks for making 2013 an extraordinary year of public service from your public media organization.

The President’s Volunteer Service Award honors volunteers who have achieved extensive hours of commitment during a twelve month period. Recipients receive a lapel pin, personalized certificate of achievement, and a congratulatory letter from the President of the United States. Based upon hours of service, WOSU volunteers were recently honored: Jan Confer received a silver pin, and Grace Bachman, Bill Gobert and Dale Knutson received bronze pins.

Bob Yocom was given the Lifetime Service Award in recognition of his unfailing dedication and devotion to WOSU across the span of many years. He received the award for completing a remarkable 4,698 total recorded hours of service over the course of his lifetime. The dedication of all our volunteers is an immensely valuable resource, and is crucial to the success of WOSU Public Media. We cannot thank them enough for their hard work.

For more information on volunteering with WOSU Public Media, and the Presidential Volunteer Service Award, please visit: wosu.org/about/volunteer-for-wosu and presidentialserviceawards.gov.

If you have made arrangements to leave a gift to WOSU in your will, why should you let WOSU know? Here are some thoughtful points to consider:

Many donors are hesitant to share their intentions because they are afraid that other organizations could solicit them for an estate gift as well. There is an easy fix for this: tell WOSU you would like to remain anonymous and do not want to seek any recognition for your gift. We will respect your wishes.

Sometimes donors want to remain flexible about the organizations they want to leave in their will and thus are reluctant to share their estate plans. Yet, one of the greatest components of planned giving is that most gifts are not set in stone: if you change your mind later on down the road, you can easily change your will as well. WOSU will understand if you need to alter your planned gift for private reasons.

Some donors say they feel their gift is not significant enough to merit notification. But community organizations like WOSU rely heavily on member contributions, big and small, and knowing that planned gifts are

Is WOSU Public Media in Your Will? If So, Please Consider Letting Us Know.

expected helps us to better plan for the financial future of WOSU. In addition, WOSU Public Media likes to be able to thank donors during their lifetime and find out what donors would like to see accomplished with their gift.

We would love to hear from you if you have made a planned gift to WOSU. We will do our best to honor your wishes for privacy, recognition and the ways in which your gift will be most meaningful to you. In turn, you will be helping plan for WOSU’s future, so that we can continue to provide services that enrich the lives of people each and every day.

If you have any questions or would like to talk with someone about leaving WOSU Public Media in your estate plan, please contact Dana Viglietta, WOSU Advancement, at (614) 292-2159 or [email protected]. You can also visit wosu.org/giftplanning for more information.

On January 4th, WOSU Public Media hosted an Afternoon Tea and Premiere Screening inspired by the launch of the fourth season of Downton Abbey at the Columbus Athenaeum. More than 400 guests donned bowlers, fascinators and flapper apparel. Guests were treated to a photo booth, a silent auction and guest speaker Gayle Strege of The Ohio State

Tea, Fashion and Photos University who took a look at the fashion of the era. More Downton Abbey fans then joined the Afternoon Tea patrons up in the balcony for the free screening of the first hour of the first episode of the new season.

It was a privilege for WOSU Public Media to provide such a unique experience to our PBS viewers and their support helps us to keep programming like Downton Abbey on the air.

89.7 NPR News & Classical 101 Highlights

R A D I O H I G H L I G H T S

The All-Day NPR News Station

What to Look for in 2014Each morning the WOSU News Team gathers for its daily editorial meeting where we decide what stories 89.7 NPR News listeners will hear and what visitors to wosu.org will read. Let’s look ahead at some of the stories we will be covering this year.

The Race for Governor This likely will be The story of the year as Governor John Kasich seeks a second term and tries to fend off a challenge from Democrat Ed Fitzgerald (if he fends off a possible primary opponent). Kasich’s re-election will depend largely on Ohio’s economy which has bounced back a little from the Great Recession. Democrats point out Ohio’s job growth has stalled and the state now lags behind many other states.

Campaign 2014 Ohio voters will decide more than the governor’s race this year. They’ll vote on races for state auditor, attorney general, secretary of state, treasurer, and Ohio Supreme Court justice. They’ll also decide on members of the state legislature and Congress, although 2011 gerrymandering makes most of those races uncompetitive. Voters may decide controversial ballot questions to overturn the state’s gay marriage ban or prohibit mandatory union dues payments.

Challenging City Hall Fresh off its opposition to the failed Columbus City Schools levy, a group of citizen activists is taking on the establishment of Columbus City Hall. The group wants voters to approve a system of public financing for City Council candidates. Supporters say it will provide voters with more information and give challengers a better chance to unseat incumbents. Skeptics say it could lead to other problems. That same group, through a separate ballot initiative, also is looking to

end city of Columbus lease payments to the publically owned Nationwide Arena.

Central Ohio’s Economy Columbus is not experiencing boom times, but at least they are better times. The central Ohio unemployment rate has dropped and the housing market has rebounded in the last couple years. The first six months will tell us if the recovery will hold, speed up or stall.

Downtown Riverfront Development Plans are moving forward to redevelop the west side of the Scioto River in downtown Columbus. Leaders want to demolish Veterans Memorial Auditorium and replace it with a different memorial and park land. Plans also call for a downtown Columbus zoo and a mix of apartments and retail stores.

Affordable Care Act Now that it’s largely in place, facts will start to trump rhetoric. After three years of predictions that “Obamacare” would either save or ruin America, we’ll start to see actual evidence. 2014 will show whether more people will be covered, if premiums rise and if the Affordable Care Act puts an unbearable burden on businesses.

These are the stories we know we’ll be covering; what makes our morning meetings interesting are the stories we don’t expect. Stay tuned to 89.7 NPR News.

Central Ohio’s grayest month of the year also brings American music inspired by bright colors and good weather, Howard Hanson’s Song of Democracy in the run-up to Presidents’ Day, and “paws” for a special “treat” for Walking the Dog Day. All this and more on The American Sound!
