REFLECTION John the Baptist had been teaching the people that it was not

enough to have Abraham as father, which means, they are

God's chosen people. He confronted them with their daily life.

One must be a tree that bears good fruits. It is not enough to be

a Christian, to know the doctrine of the church or the teachings

of the bible, because one is only a luxuriant tree which does not

produce any fruits. This explains people's reaction to John the

Baptist to ask him, "What must we do?"

We cannot be believers only in our minds and in our words.

Our beliefs must be visible in our social contacts, in our con-

cern for others. John did not call people to a bible study, to a

miracle crusade, to a physical penance or to a prayer meeting.

He invites them into the coming of God's kingdom. The king-

dom of God happens when everybody does well on what is ex-

pected of him. If people are attracted to the sects, or stay away

from the church, it may be because we do not do what is ex-

pected of us, that is to love our neighbor, obey God's com-

    mandments, celebrate beautiful

    liturgies, share responsibility with

    the community and make them

    feel they are the church.

Misa De Gallo 2018—Dawn Mass Theme: “Living as Christian Stewards with Grace and Gratitude”

The tradition of Misa de Gallo (Spanish for “Rooster’s Mass), while mostly observed by

Spanish-speaking Roman Catholic countries in Latin America and in the Philippines, is an annual parish event for many of Hawaii’s Filipino Catholics. Sometimes referred to as Simbang Gabi

(Tagalog for “Night Mass”) or Misa de Aguinaldo (“Gift Mass”) the celebrations begin on December 16th and end on December 24th. After Mass, parishioners enjoy a myriad of Filipino holiday

delicacies like arroz caldo, bibingka and buto bumbong. Mass begins at 4:30 am with a light breakfast to follow. The daily themes are: Develop a Deeper Prayer Life, Depend on

and Trust in God, Live a Life of Thanksgiving, Nurture God’s Gifts Responsibly, Give Out of a

Sense of Love and Justice, Strive to Live in Readiness, Return to the Lord with Increase, Share

with Grateful Hearts, and Live a More Vibrant Christian Witness.

  • Marian Glossary

    PRESENTATION: The presentation and

dedication of Jesus to God by Mary and

Joseph in the Temple (Lk 2:22-39), in ac-

cord with Mosaic Law concerning the first-

born. At the Presentation, Simeon and

Anna sum up the expectation of Israel for

the long-awaited Messiah, the light of the

nations and the glory of Israel, but also as

a sign of contradiction. The presentation of

the gifts, especially of bread and wine, is a

preparatory rite for the liturgy of the Eucha-

    rist at Mass.

ROSARY: A prayer in honor of the Blessed

Virgin Mary, which repeats the privileged

Marian prayer Ave Maria, or Hail Mary, in

"decades" of ten prayers, each preceded

by the Pater Noster ("Our Father") and

concluded by the Gloria Patri (Glory Be to

the Father), accompanied by meditation on

the mysteries of Christ's life. The rosary

was developed by medieval piety in the

Latin church as a popular substitute for the

    liturgical prayer of the Hours.

VIRGIN BIRTH: The conception of Jesus

in the womb of the Virgin Mary solely by

the power of the Holy Spirit. The Church's

confession of faith in the virgin birth affirms

that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spir-

    it without human seed.

VIRGIN MARY: The mother of Jesus, who

is honored as "ever-virgin" for her perpetu-

    al virginity.

VISITATION: At the annunciation, the an-

gel Gabriel told Mary that she would be the

mother of the savior. Gabriel also told Mary

that her barren cousin, Elizabeth, had con-

ceived a son in her old age. Mary went to

visit her cousin and confirmed the truth of

the angel’s words. The time she spent with

Elizabeth is referred to as “the visitation.”
