When we tread the road to the malls, the only God we most likely encounter there is the God of commercialism, the God of want and invented needs. But while all the ads point to the mall roads and shopping areas, the Advent Season points us to a different road, the road to the desert. On this Advent Season, we turn our collecve graze once more to the figures of John the Bapst, Zechariah, Elizabeth, Mary and once more points us to this road less travelled. The Church once more points our aenon to the Incarnate One who will say to us, “I am the way, the truth and the life.” In the Scripture, the desert has always been a road to purificaon, of purgaon, of being stripped down to the bare essenals. Israel was puri- fied 40 years in the desert before reaching the Promised Land. Jeremiah encountered God in a trying me in the desert. Jesus spent 40 days pre- paring for the acve ministry in the desert. Let us not then treat these days as simply preparaon for the holidays. Let us make these days truly Holy days of ancipaon and welcome and allow the joy that Christ gives in our lives. Encounter with the true God is only possible when we are purified, purgated and stripped down to bare essen- als because God is not a God of superficial- ity, shallowness and excess. He is the God of meaning, depth and simplicity.

REFLECTION It’s Advent Season once again, the beginning of a new liturgical year. The Christmas rush is officially on, especially after Thanksgiving Day with the Black Friday mad and frenetic day. All roads seem to lead to the mails and entertainment places once again. When we tread the road to the malls, the only God we most likely encounter there is the God of commercialism, the God of want and invented needs. But while all the ads point to the mall roads and shopping areas, the Advent Season points us to a different road, the road to the desert.

On this Advent Season, we turn our collective graze once more to the figures of John the Baptist, Zechariah, Elizabeth, Mary and once more points us to this road less travelled. The Church once more points our attention to the Incarnate One who will say to us, “I am the way, the truth and the life.”

In the Scripture, the desert has always been a road to purification, of purgation, of being stripped down to the bare essentials. Israel was puri-fied 40 years in the desert before reaching the Promised Land. Jeremiah encountered God in a trying time in the desert. Jesus spent 40 days pre-paring for the active ministry in the desert.

Let us not then treat these days as simply preparation for the holidays. Let us make these days truly Holy days of anticipation and welcome and allow the joy that Christ gives in our lives. Encounter with the true God is only possible when we are purified, purgated and stripped down to bare essen-tials because God is not a God of superficial-ity, shallowness and excess. He is the God of meaning, depth and simplicity.

ADVENT

Beginning the Church's liturgical year, Advent (from, "ad-venire" in Latin or "to come to") is the season encompassing the four Sundays (and weekdays) leading up to the celebration of Christmas.

The Advent season is a time of preparation that directs our hearts and minds to Christ’s second coming at the end of time and also to the anniversary of the Lord’s birth on Christmas. The final days of Advent, from December 17 to December 24, focus particularly on our preparation for the celebrations of the Nativity of our Lord (Christmas).

Advent devotions including the Advent wreath, remind us of the meaning of the season. The Advent calendar is found at www.usccb.org can help

you fully enter into the season with daily activity and

prayer suggestions to prepare you spiritually for the

birth of Jesus Christ.
