Dear Friends,
There are many who pride them-
selves in being broad-minded.
They feel that they are tolerant
and respectful of other views, and
are always ready to learn some-
thing new or different.
Up to a point, these people have a firm
intellectual basis for their conviction. Yet,
there are other facets to the term “broad-
minded.” A person who agrees with all,
accepts all, tolerates all, is not really broad-
minded, but convictionless. To such a one,
all views are equally important, equally
factual. That mind is open to every convic-
tion, but does not close on any conclusion
or decision. It is a symptom of our times to
be sure.
A truly broad-minded person should not
strive merely to be open to all views, but
to hold certain convictions personally.
There is often a right way and a wrong
way in doing many things. This person
believes in a definite way of life, and
organizes life in such a way that conforms
to the highest standards demanded by this
faith and belief.
Rabbi Morris Adler once wrote: “To be
broad-minded means to combine depth of
faith with breadth of concern; to
unite conviction with intellectual
hospitality; to join firm belief with
capacity to learn.”
Broad-mindedness is not to dwell
in a “never-never land” of accep-
tance of all one sees and hears, but
the combination of strongly-held convic-
tions with a respect for the views of others.
Respect, not emulation or imitation.
Chanukah (“The Feast of Rededication”)
is around the corner. Its main message is:
“Be Jews. Be maximal Jews.” On Chanu-
kah, we celebrate our unfailing pursuit of
Jewish values in a world that is often the
antithesis of those very values. On Chanu-
kah, we renew our belief that broad-
mindedness does not mean to succumb to
whatever is currently popular or expedient.
Will we live our strongly held Jewish
convictions? Will these convictions form
the bedrock of our being?
Happy Chanukah everyone!
B’Shalom – In Peace,
From the Desk of Rabbi Irwin A. Tanenbaum, D.D.
TBA Men’s Group
Come to our meeting on December 18th at 9:00 AM and join with the fellowship
and conversation regarding our Temple and the community.
The certificate for Volunteerism Program continues to work well. Those who have
paid up dues to the TBA Men’s Group receive a certificate for every event that they
volunteer their time to. When the Men’s Group runs an event that has a cost associ-
ated with it, the certificates can be turned in towards the cost of that event. Look to-
ward a golf outing in February! Volunteer a few times, and go for free!!

Temple Sinai – Temple Beth Am Social Group
On October 13th, Temple Sinai members joined Temple Beth Am members for a
Sukkot Pot Luck Dinner featuring fall foods. We were treated to delicious dishes like
lentil soup, vegetarian stew, eggplant parmesan, vegetarian chili, sweet potatoes, and
many salads, kugels and desserts. Over 70 people representing both congregations
came together in the Social Hall for dinner, followed by the Israeli movie, “Ushpizin.”
Watch for more information as we plan more “fun raisers” in the next few months.

From Cantor Sharon Eve Colbert, M.J.S.M.
Have you ever heard the term “Mi Sinai?” Literally – from Sinai. It is a term used to
refer to a Jewish musical tradition that is so engrained in our communal conscience
that we think it goes back to Moses. Actually “Mi Sinai” is around the 1500s! The
melody for Shema that we sing almost exclusively for all services, and is referred to
as “Mi Sinai,” was written in the early 1800s.
It is important to me as your invested hazzan to guard Judaism’s musical history, and
not let it be overwhelmed, forgotten or lost. The melodies that I presented at the High
Holy Days – Selichot through Simchat Torah – linked us, here in the 21
st
century to
generations of Jews before us.
I was heartened, at the conclusion of the High Holy Days, that so many people felt a
connection with the song “Holy Ground.” It was written in 2009. The melody for Kol
Nidre was first heard in 11th century France. The arrangement I have brought to
TBA is from the 1940s and the 5th Avenue Synagogue in New York City. Other
melodies, like the Adon Olam we enjoyed together on Erev Rosh Hashanah, was writ-
ten for Jan Pierce by Shalom Secunda (Mein Dir Bist Duchein) in 1919.
In 5772/2012, I hope to broaden your musical sensibilities with a Klezmer Shabbat,
and, in my wildest dreams, a Cantor’s Shabbat, where I will present some great melo-
dies no longer commonly utilized in modern Temple Shabbat services. I hope you
will support me in my efforts to strengthen the link, the shalshelet, the chain of melo-
dies that defines the Jewish people.

A Hanukkah custom frequently overlooked is to linger, without working, for about thirty minutes, while the twinkling candles are burn-
ing down. What a gift! And, it is free! What would you do with those thirty minutes?
Perhaps this is an opportunity to retreat from our busy schedules and just relax with our families. It may sound trite, but the best gift we
can give our children is to spend time with them.
Take this opportunity to reconnect. Find out what is on your children’s minds. Ask open-ended questions. You may unexpectedly spend
more than thirty minutes. This quality time might be the best gift you receive this year. Happy Hanukkah.

The new year of BATY has gotten off to a great start! Our focus this year is on volunteering throughout the Western New York
area. Many of our programs will be based in volunteering and community service. We really want to make a difference, and we
are excited about this new addition to our program. BATY is a great way to get involved, lend a hand, and have a great time do-
ing it! We will also still feature social events. New members are welcome at any time, so feel free to join us! If you have any
questions about BATY or membership, please contact Liz Messer at 512-5218 or [email protected].

Greetings From Sisterhood
It was wonderful to see new faces at Sisterhood’s Paid-up Brunch in October.
Long-time members and guests also came to enjoy Sheryl Genco’s moving
violin performance. Sheryl played a beautiful collection of classical music, with
some Jewish favorites mixed in. My favorite was her haunting theme from
Schindler’s List. Our thanks go to our event chair, Diane Symons, and to Jean
Messinger, Janice Cohen, Rella Corris, Mary Usen, and Jennie Pohl for all their
contributions to make this a lovely get-together. Jonny C’s catered the spread,
and a few members contributed desserts, including Grace Bluestone’s famous
apple cake. Thank you to all who contributed and all who attended.
Please continue to participate in our events and fund raisers. We especially
hope you will volunteer to assist with our activities. You don’t want to see the
same people running every event, and believe me, the same people do not want
to be in charge all of the time. When you RSVP next time, please offer to help
out. You will enjoy yourself even more.
Please support Bingo. Our Temple is committed to Monday night Bingo. If you
cannot volunteer, come to play. Come to Sisterhood Bingo night on Monday,
December 12th. Join me, and tell all your friends to come and play Bingo with
us.
Lastly, we are invited to join the Men’s Group Sunday morning Health Lecture
series and any fund raisers they do. Come join us whenever you can.

The Hanukkah Book Bag Mitzvah Project
(sponsored by the Religious School)
Help families from the Shalom Zone, a Community
Center near School 45. Drop off new or gently used
books for Pre-K through 6th grade and deposit them
in the giant Hanukkah Book Bag in the Religious
School foyer from December 1st - 13th.
Clean, gently used warm clothing would also be
appreciated.
Meet with the Rabbi
If you need the Rabbi for guidance,
advice, or if you just want to schmooze,
every Tuesday from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM
is your opportunity. Check with N.Jo
at 633-8877 to make sure you’re on his
schedule, or just stop by his office and
he will see you on a first come, first
served basis.

Annual Giving
Annual Giving got off to an exciting start! Just within the first few weeks, our congregants submitted cash and pledges that brought
us within 35% of our goal. Thank you all for your generous and immediate response. I am confident that there are many more con-
gregants who will follow your lead. By reaching our ultimate goal of $85,000, we ensure that all of our families will reap the benefits
of keeping Temple Beth Am alive and healthy to nurture our spiritual lives. Reaching our goal ensures that the future of Judaism will
live on in our Religious School, and in the hearts and minds of future generations that will sit in our classrooms. Reaching our goal is
possible only through the participation of our congregation, at a level of your own discretion.
If you have not sent in your donation or pledge yet, remember that December 31st is right around the corner. This would be a won-
derful way to close out the year with the spirit of tzedakah in your heart, and getting a tax break at the same time! In the words of my
very wise son, “there is no doubt that Temple Beth Am will use the funds for a better purpose than the government will!”
Please check the Temple Topics each month, starting in December, for a listing of our Annual Giving Donors. Thank you.
