On this, the Sunday within the Octave of Christmas, we honor the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph. In honoring them, we also honor all families, big or small. And in honoring all families, we honor the family of God, the Church. But most especially, we focus in on the hidden, day-to-day life of the Holy Family of Nazareth.
What was it like to live day in and day out in the household of St. Joseph? What was it like to have Jesus for a son, Mary as a wife and mother, and Joseph as a father and husband? Their home would have certainly been a sacred place and a dwelling of true peace and unity. But it would have also been so much more.
The family home of Jesus, Mary and Joseph would have been, in numerous ways, just like any other home. They would have related together, talked, had fun, disagreed, worked, eaten, dealt with problems, and encountered everything else that makes up daily family life.
Of course, the virtues of Jesus and Mary were perfect, and St. Joseph was a truly “just man.”
Therefore, the overriding characteristic of their home would have been love.
But with that said, their family would not have been exempt from daily toil, hurt and challenges that face most families. For example, they would have encountered the death of loved ones, St. Joseph most likely passed away prior to Jesus’ public ministry. They would have encountered misunder-standing and gossip from others. Our Blessed Mother, for example, was found with child out of wedlock. This would have been a topic of discussion among many acquaintances for sure. They would have had to fulfill all daily chores, earn a living, put food on the table, attend gatherings of family and friends and the like. They would have lived normal family life in every way.
This is significant because it reveals God’s love for family life. The Father allowed His Divine Son to live this life and, as a result, elevated family life to a place within the Trinity. The holiness of the Holy Family reveals to us that every family is invited to share in God’s divine life and to encounter ordinary daily life with grace and virtue.
Reflect, today, upon your own family life. Some families are strong in virtue, some struggle with basic communication. Some are faithful day in and day out, some are broken and deeply wound-ed. No matter the case, know that God wants to enter more deeply into your family life just as it is right now. He desires to give you strength and virtue to live as the Holy Family. Surrender yourself and your family, this day, and invite the Triune God to make your family a holy family.

En este, el domingo dentro de la Octava de Navidad, honramos a la Sagrada
Familia de Jesús, María y José. Al honrarlos, también honramos a todas las
familias, grandes o pequeñas. Y al honrar a todas las familias, honramos a la
familia de Dios, la Iglesia. Pero sobre todo, nos enfocamos en la vida oculta
del día a día de la Sagrada Familia de Nazaret.
¿Cómo era vivir día tras día en la casa de San José? ¿Cómo fue tener a Jesús
como hijo, a María como esposa y madre, y a José como padre y esposo? Su
hogar ciertamente habría sido un lugar sagrado y una morada de verdadera
paz y unidad. Pero también hubiera sido mucho más.
La casa familiar de Jesús, María y José habría sido, de muchas maneras, como
cualquier otra casa. Se habrían relacionado, hablado, se habían divertido, no
estaban de acuerdo, habían trabajado, comido, lidiado con problemas y encontrado todo lo demás que conforma la
vida familiar diaria.
Por supuesto, las virtudes de Jesús y María fueron perfectas, y San José fue un verdadero "hombre justo".
Por lo tanto, la característica principal de su hogar habría sido el amor.
Pero dicho esto, su familia no habría estado exenta del trabajo diario, el dolor y los desafíos que enfrentan la

familia una familia sagrada.

The red Sanctuary Lamp above the Tabernacle burns to remind us of the sacramental presence of Jesus Christ. If you wish to have the Sanctuary Candle burning in memory of a loved one, to honor a special occasion, or a special intention, you can make arrangements with the Parish Office. The cost of the candle is $20 and it burns for one week. A notice of your intention will be posted in the bulletin. Have you ever been unable to explain the “why” of Catholic beliefs? Have you ever wondered why the Old Testament sounds so different from the New Testament? In the Old Testament, God began building a plan and laying a foundation for the beautiful traditions of the Catholic Faith. Fulfilled explores the biblical roots of the Catholic Faith. It uncovers God’s consistent design for our worship of him and his relationship with us. In Part Two – Drawn into the Divine Mystery focuses on elements of the inner sanctuary of the Tabernacle and how they connect to the Magisterium, the Eucharist, Incense, Mary and
more. I hope you will join us as we return to our weekly bible study. This study will be offered Wednesdays 9:30am beginning January 15 and runs 7 weeks. This study will also be offered Thursdays 7pm beginning January 16 and runs 7 weeks. Materials for this class will cost $25 payable at the first class. Recycle Your Christmas Tree!!!
Troop 144 will be recycling Christmas Trees again this year. Trees may be dropped off in the parking lot on Washington St.
behind the SJB Parish Center (across from the high school football field). Drop off days are Saturdays Dec. 28th and Jan. 4th., from 10am to 3pm. Suggested donation is $5. Wreaths, swags and garlands may also be dropped off. Trees can also be scheduled for pick-up for addresses with 97222 and 97267 zip codes. Tree pick-up days are Dec. 28th and 29th and Jan. 4th and 5th. Suggested donation for pick-up trees is $10. Please call Joe at 503-760-3454 to arrange for a tree pick-up.
