A new investment network will launch in West- meath tomor- row with a funding pot of e1 million for promising ven- tures in the midlands. Lir Investors, the Midlands Business Angels Network, has brought together a group of private investors with the aim of supporting promising local entrepreneurs who have lim- ited funding options. The initiative is the brain- child of Mullingar-based in- vestor and web entrepreneur Martin Nally. Formerly managing director of the Westmeath Examiner Group, Nally now runs the sites Handyweb.ie and Farm- ersforum.ie. ‘‘It has been on my mind to research some way to make funding available to businesses who have no other access to funding,’’ said Nally. ‘‘Having researched the Halo Business Angels Network [HBAN], I felt it was an excel- lent way to bring together peo- ple who have funds with the intent of putting something they have made back into the community.’’ Nally’s aim in setting up Lir Investors was, he said, to create a flexible match-making ser- vice to bring worthy businesses together with suitable inves- tors. So far, he has assembled a group of ten investors with combined funding of up to e1 million, but hopes tomorrow’s launch in Mullingar will draw interest from other suitable candidates. ‘‘I was attracted to the flex- ibility of the HBAN operation. Investors are not handcuffed,’’ he said. ‘‘You don’t have to put money in, and you are only in the group because you trust the other members and they trust you.You can invest in one project ^ or several ^ with one or a number of other investors, or you need not invest at all.’’ Nally said the new network would look most favourably on investees with clear potential for growth and a sturdy sales strategy. ‘‘We are particularly inter- ested in any businesses that are suitable for the export industry. There are huge markets world- wide that are predominantly unaffected by the global down- turn, and if we can enable a midlands company to move into export markets we are creating opportunities for long term income and employment for the midlands region,’’ he said. Lir Investors will host its open evening tomorrow from 7pm in the Mullingar Park Hotel in association with the Midlands Regional Authority and the Midlands Gateway Chamber. John Teeling, foun- der of the Cooley Distillery, will chair the meeting and speakers will include Gerry Duffy, UK Deca-Enduroman Champion 2011 and HBAN national director Diane Ro- berts.
