Prayer Shawl Ministry The Ministry’s message of caring is simple, universal and enduring. We care and want to bring comfort to those in need. The ministry is active here at Bethany UMC. The simple act of giving a shawl enriches both the giver and the receiver. If you would like to join the Prayer Shawl Ministry, please come to our meetings on the first Monday of each month in Room 119 at 2pm, or call Marge Veneziano @ 843-607-4519. Shawls are available if you would like one, or know someone who could use a “hug,” comfort, or prayer. Recipients are not required to be Bethany Members.

Bethany Quilters Our quilters quilt Tuesday’s 10-3. Bring a bag lunch. Should you quilt and want to join us any time between these hours, bring your needle, thimble and scissors and come enjoy some good fellowship. Our doors are also open to those who want to see the beautiful art of quilting!

PLARNING MINISTRY The Plarning Ministry reaches out to the homeless community to bring comfort

and a little joy. We make sleeping mats using ordinary plastic grocery bags.

The bags are cut into loops and looped together to make plarn balls which can

be crocheted into a 36 inch by 6-foot mat. It prevents them from sleeping on

the ground. No need to know how to crochet. We can

teach you or you can help by cutting the bags and mak-

ing the balls. If you would like to join our ministry,

please come to one or both of our meetings. We meet in

room 122 every Monday from 10-12 and Wednesday

evenings 6:15-7:15. If you have questions you may call

Clara Stonner at (843) 509-2849.

YOGA

Classes meet Tuesday and Thursday at 8:30 in the gym. $5 per class. Please bring your own mat.

KidsCare News: As this school year comes to a close, we are looking

back at all we have been blessed with at KidsCare!

We had an average of 60 children attending on a

daily basis! We have grown and learned many

things and have definitely seen God’s hand at work

in our ministry here at KidsCare! We had a 10 week

Bible Verse Challenge and memorized verses from

Proverbs, it will stay with the children as they continue to grow into Godly

young men and women! We participated in filling the blessing box several

times and the children gave and RECEIVED blessings from that! We look for-

ward to what the summer has in store for us as we continue to take reserva-

tions for our camp! We have so much fun planned it’s easy to get excited! We

will take field trips to the beach, the movies, and have picnics and water slides!

Please keep us in your prayers always as we continue to care for the most pre-

cious blessings God gives us, we really appreciate your prayers for safety as we

venture out and about with some really remarkable kids! If you are interested

in our Summer Camp, please email us at [email protected] or call

(843) 697-4429.

WELCOME MARK BARNES Mark Barnes joins our staff as Minister of Congregational Care. Mark

grew up on Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina before joining the Air

Force. He spent a couple of years in aircraft maintenance, and during

that time knew God was calling him to military ministry. He left the ser-

vice for a few years to complete seminary and serve as a pastor. He mar-

ried his wife Terri in 1985. Mark returned to the Air Force as a chaplain,

serving in locations all over the world. Mark and Terri chose Summerville

as their home when he retired from the military after thirty+ years of

service. They have three grown children, Will, Jessie, and Wesley, and a

daughter-in-law, Will's wife, Morgan.

Ecuador Missions

The Ecuador Mission Trip is scheduled for the end of June, beginning of July. Planning is well underway with flight reservations being made. If you are interested in participating on the trip this year, please contact Stephen Bishop ([email protected], 843-696-6938). VBS, construction, basic dental care, and in home visits are planned this year. No experience is necessary. Philippians 4:13 says I can do all this through him who gives me strength. Matthew 17:20 says "Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Know this, participating on the mission trip will leave you feeling blessed. I hope to see you on this trip. In His wakes… Steve.

We would like to extend our Christian Sympathies to the Family and Friends of Kevin Dubis as he joined The Church Triumphant.

MISSIONS

“Thank you” just doesn’t seem enough after the outpouring of love and support that I have received from my Bethany family since my cancer diagnosis and surgery. I have truly appreciated the visits, calls, texts, cards, flowers, and meals over the last two months, but thank you most of all for your prayers. Our incredible God has answered our prayers in ways I could have never imagined, as I have done “abnormally well” according to the doctors. Thank you to the Prayer Shawl Ladies and to the Flower Team as well for the beautiful gifts. As I continue this journey, please pray fervently for The Lord’s healing, and may He be glorified through it.

Thank you! Mona Gilbert

Register for VBS at bethany-umc.com One small step for kids…one giant leap for God’s Kingdom!

We are going to Mars and Beyond at VBS this year. We will help kids discover the

wonders of God’s universe as they become voyagers on a journey through space,

exploring where God’s power can take them. Once again we are expecting over 500

Voyagers, from children who are currently in a 3K class to those who have completed

sixth grade. Children are placed in VBS classes according to their current grade level.

We need lots of volunteers to make it a success. Please consider contributing your time

and talent to this week of fun and blessings.

A few more things to keep in mind for a successful VBS:

curriculum and plans for crafts, snacks, recreation, science and more. Child care will be

provided. Teen helpers do not need to attend this training.

space (or space looking) items such as telescopes, astronaut costumes, large stars, foil

Trustees Corner: The Bethany Trustees thank Maintenance Director Kevin Slack and Church Administrator Henry Thompson for their diligence in repairs at the “Blue House” and 303 Central Avenue.

Stephen Ministry The Living Oasis at the Flowertown Festival featured a prayer tent. The oasis offered seats and tables for a rest from the crowds at the

popular event. In addition, Stephen Ministers and other church members extended the chance to pray for individuals. A comfortable spot and “spiritual water” was offered to anyone who would like personal interaction and prayers. Thou hast set me at large when I was in distress: Have mercy upon me, and hear my prayer. Psalm 4:1 …and the prayer of faith shall save him that is sick, and the Lord shall raise him up... James 5:15 Current Stephen Minister trainees are over halfway through their approximately 50 hours of classwork. The group of 7 will complete the training in late May and be commissioned in June. Leader Carmie Wagaman asks that the congregation continue to pray for the trainees. All Bethany members are invited to receive or refer the gift of a Stephen Minister. The one-on-one relationship provides a caring friend to listen and to walk alongside someone dealing with hurt, conflict or crisis in his or her life. There is no obligation with an inquiry and never a fee for this Christian ministry. Please contact one of these leaders for a confidential conversation to learn how a Stephen Minister could help: Carmie Wagaman - 843-414-7026 ; Denis Tsukalas - 843-871-0381 or Mary Kay Wrenn - 843-323-2130.

News from

The CDC

EPIPHANY

It’s hard to believe another school year is almost over and it is a big milestone. This

month marks the completion of Bethany CDC’s 40th year! For 40 years Bethany CDC

has been providing quality early childhood education in a Christian setting to area

families. Students from the first CDC classes are now bringing their children to the

CDC! The idea for a weekday preschool here at Bethany began with June Wilson in the mid

70’s. She formed a committee to investigate the possibility of starting a preschool. As

members of this committee, Susan Gaston and Jane Nichols went to a summer

workshop at Lake Junaluska to learn more. When they returned, the committee used

this information to form a plan which was approved by Bethany’s administrative board

after much discussion. Bethany Weekday Preschool held its first classes in 1978/1979 school year. Since then

we have had so much support from the church over the years in the form of ideas,

volunteerism, sharing of gifts and talents. We have this program because of the

dedication and support of our church members and preschool staff over the years. The

vision for a weekday preschool shared by that committee more than 40 years ago has

grown and grown into the program you see today. We are blessed to have been able to

touch the lives of thousands of families. Special thanks to Susan Gaston, who has

served as our Board chair for these 40 years and continues to guide us today and to my

predecessors as director, Rainey Bernhardt and Pam Kahl. These women built a strong

foundation for this program and inspire me to do my best to live up to the example

they set to provide the very best program possible for the children we serve.

The last week of school features end of the year picnics for all the preschoolers on the

Bethany CDC playground. Our 4 year old classes will be celebrating the end of the year

with an Art and Music program on May 22nd at 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. You

will be amazed at their talents! Kindergarten graduation will be May 23rd at 6:30

p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Everyone is invited, and for children and families both, it’s a

wonderful time of celebration.

I can’t let the year end without taking this opportunity to thank our wonderful,

dedicated, caring and professional staff. They work hard to make Bethany CDC such a

special place. Our teachers love the children as if they were their own and strive hard

to provide the best in early childhood education for each and every child. I’d like to

recognize members of the CDC Board who volunteer their time to guide and support

our program: Susan Gaston, Jim Kahl, Jodie Collier, Jordi Graffis, Martha Houston,

David Leslie, Stephanie Mitchum, Renee Thomas, Emily Vick and Danielle Whitehead.

Last, but not least by any means, thank you to all of the CDC parents for sharing their

precious children with us this year.

Epworth Children’s Home is partnering with Bethany UMC and the Charleston District in a district-wide new program called “Every Child is a Miracle.” This program, supported through a grant of the Duke Foundation, is to recruit, train and support foster families in Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester Counties. This partnership will be a mission of Bethany and we’re excited about the ways we can come alongside these families. Stay tuned for more information and volunteer opportunities, as you begin to pray for this ministry.
