How to follow Christ Today (part 1) "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross and follow me." (Mt. 16; 24) "As He was passing along, He saw Levi, the son of Alpheus, sitting at the tax collector's place and He said to him, 'Follow me.' (Mk. 2; 14)
"One thing you are still lacking. Sell all you have and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven, and come, follow me." (Lk. 18; 22) "You do not believe because you are not of my sheep. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them and they follow me." (Jn 10; 27)
The heart of Christian spirituality is to follow and imitate Christ. Through the Incarnation, God became man to redeem us and to show us by His teaching and example how we are to live in this passing world on the road to eternity. If we love Jesus, we keep His commandments. We are constantly bombarded by the temptations of the world around us through the mass-media via television and the Internet, and people who are preoccupied with making money and having a good time. Our faith is tried and we begin to ask ourselves how can we follow Christ in the world that we live in that goes against everything Christ stands for? "Be still and know that I am God." (Ps 46; 10) Jesus came into this world as a silent infant, and His first words are recorded when he was 12, and then silence for 18 years. During His public life, Jesus spoke often, but spent long silent hours in quiet conversation with His Father. At 2 dramatic points during His Passion, His silent spoke with an eloquence that will be remembered for all (Cont. on pg. 3)

time. He did not answer to the accusations leveled against Him before Pilate and He did not say a word while Herod and his court mocked him as an ignorant fool. Whenever Christ spoke, He had the right thing to say; when He was silent, He refrained from saying anything wrong. We must then take time out from talking with people and retreat to a church for periods of solitude and silence. Enter the depths of our soul and think and praise God with unspoken words and thoughts. We have to go apart, or even go away as Christ did, from the world that clamors for attention to be seen, looked at, to be heard and listened to. This is to condition us for mental prayer, communicating with God. Faith tells us that as God, Christ was one in being with the Father. But as a man, Christ was in constant communion with the Father. He would retire to the desert and mountains to pray. Yet His Priestly Prayer at the Last Supper in John's Gospel is spontaneous mental prayer that He allowed the disciples to hear, and thus give us the inspiration to pour out our hearts to God. To follow Christ means to imitate Christ. To remain a Christian in a de-christianized society, one must practice the virtues of Christ. In a world that is self-idolized and self-important, we are to imitate His humility; where lust is celebrated, we must emulate His chastity, where the accumulation of wealth is idealized, we must approximate His practice of poverty; where the pursuit of pleasure and avoidance of pain are a norm of life, we must learn from His patience and, like Him, carry our daily cross, and where cruelty, even to the murder of unborn innocents is legalized, we must give witness to Christ's heroic charity. All these mean the following of Christ, the eternal Son of the eternal Father. He became man so that by imitating His life on earth we might become more like Him who is our God. (to be continued)
