Today we are starting a new series looking at the life and ministry of Jonah. Jonah’s mission was to call the Ninevites to repentance. The town was part of Assyria and this country had been exceptionally cruel to the Israelites, hence Jonah’s reluctance to obey God’s call. He set sail on a ship in the opposite direction but even through his disobedience, God used this for his glory as the sailors came to faith in the Living God. The book of Jonah gives us a picture of the real Saviour. Jesus was a prophet, his death and resurrection were a fulfilment of the sign given through Jonah. Both had three days in an ocean, one literal and the other was cast into the ocean of God’s wrath (at the cross) by taking on our sin. The difference between the two was that Jonah went through all he did because of his disobedience while Jesus’ experience was because of our sin. There are many things that we can learn from this but a couple of important lessons are firstly, that the trials we face are not designed to pay us back for our sin, but to bring us back from sin. And secondly, as we experience God’s mercy we need to be moved to grow our love for God and our compassion for the lost.
