Valmiki RamayanaM Sundara Kandam Sargam 58

The Sundarakandam inValmiki Ramayanam describes the valiant adventures of Hanuman the Aanjaneya who performed the heroic task of jumping over the Southern ocean(the present Bay of Bengal) from the southern tip of India (somewhere in Dhanushkoti?) in a single leap, reached Devi Sita who was kept in captivity by the Rakshasa King Ravana in his Island Kingdom Lanka, delivered to her the message of Sri Rama, Caused irreparable damages to Lanka and reached back where his friends were wating for him eagerly. Once the whereabouts of Sita were known and the tidings were passed on to Rama and Lakshmana and the Monkey king Sugriva, the princes along with the army of monkeys built a bridge across the ocean, crossed over to Lanka and fought a fierce battle with Ravana. Ravana with all his associates was killed and Sita was released and she was restored to the company of her husband Rama.

But for the amazing show of valour and astuteness of Hanuman as described in the Sundarakandam, the glorious turn of events in Ramayana would not have been possible at all. Rarely indeed in lores of heroism that we can find such an exploit by a single person with nothing other than his own adroitness to come to his rescue, performing actions in uncanny precision where even a single wrong step forward would have proved fatal for both the Hero and all others whose life and dreams entirely depended upon the success of this one person.

After having seen Sita, Hanuman has jumped back to India and is in the eager company of his doting associates including Angada, the heir apparent of the Kingdom of Monkeys, Kishkinda, Jambavaan the valiant and deathless boar, and hundreds of other valiant monkeys.

The 58th chapter of Sundarakandam is actually a resume' of what all the inimitable Hanuman did during the time-span starting with his jump towards Lanka leaving behind his friends and ending with the moment he jumped back home after successful completion of his great mission. The narrative comes in the form of answer to a query by the wizened Jamabavan and one can have a clear Idea of the contents of the whole of Sundarakandam by reading this single chapter alone. The chapter in 166 couplets is an erudite condensation of the whole Sundarakandam consisting of more that 2800 couplets. This chapter is as important as the first chapter of the first Kandam (Bala Knandam) of Ramayanam, where the whole story of the epic which is later described in about 24000 couplets, is given in a nutshell.

After the arrival of Hanuman who was received by his friends in great jubiliation, the whole group of valiant monkeys with the heroic Anjaneya in the forefront, proceeded to one of the prominent and comfortable peaks of the mountain Mahendra. There the venerated elder minister Jaambavan who was in an excited state of greatest admiration for the achievement of his colleague, asked the great monkey about all that had been achieved by the latter after he had left all alone in his glorious mission. “ How did you manage to meet Devi Sita in captivity? What is her state of welfare there? Has the Cruel Demon Ravana inflicted on her any damages or has he tortured her ? You the valiant monkey, be pleased to tell us all these in great detail. We have to decide on our further course of action after hearing what you have to say.

Now we have to go and report to the Princes Rama and Lakshmana and our King Sugriva. We have to decide on what all things we should report and what tidings we should refrain from divulging. You are the best judge. Please tell us.”

Thus persuaded, Hanuman the great monkey possessed of great intellect and immense physique, was very happy, and after offering pranams mentally to Sita, started his great narrative.

“ You were all witnesses to my huge leap from the top of this very mountain Mahendra. towards the sky in the direction of Lanka seeking the southern-most tip of the ocean. While I was forging ahead there appeared some serious-looking obstacle in my path. It was in the shape of a very beautiful peak of a mountain raising skywards. Placing himself in my aerial path the mountain appeared to be a great obstacle for my onward journey.

Approaching the great mountain peak of golden hue the idea that occurred in my mind was that the obstacle before me should be shattered to pieces. Therefore I lashed at the mountain with my huge tail. The top of the mountain which was shining like the Sun itself, was shattered to smithereens. Then the great mountain, apprehending my hostility addressed me in endearing terms intent upon pacifying me “My son, you please recognize me as your uncle. I am the dear friend of your father the God of wind. I am popularly known as Mainaaka ( the son of the great mountain Himavan and Mena) and I am at present staying immersed in the great ocean of the south. In ancient days, the mountains had wings and they flew across the sky and landed upon the earth at random on various locations, causing great damages to the occupants on the planes. Learning about the unruly behaviourof the mountains, Paakashaasana, the illustrious Indra, hunted the mountains in thousands and started cutting off their wings. While I was fleeing from the fall of the weapon of thunderbolt belonging to Indra, your father helped me by carrying me in great speed and dropping me in the southern seas there to hide in the depth of the ocean.

Moreover since the seas were created by the forefathers of Rama, and since the ocean is my benefactor, I am bound by duty to be of service to Rama. Rama is the foremost among the virtuous persons and is equal in valour to Lord Indra himself. "

My spirits were roused by hearing the words of the great mountain Mainaka, and after paying respects to him and having been lauded by him, I continued my journey along my aerial route. The mountain and its human form then submerged itself into the great ocean. And I surged along in the southern direction with great speed.

As I forged ahead on my way to the shores of Lanka, Devi Surasa, the mother of all snakes appeared before me and accosted me on my path. She informed me that I am ordained as her days food by the gods. Therefore she would eat me, she continued. She considered me her most suitable food of her lifetime. When I was told by her like that I stopped before her with folded hands in utter respect. The healthy colour of my face vanished on the face of such a demand from the divine mother. I presented before her the following words. “Sri Rama, the son of Dasaratha, came for a sojourn as ascetic in the Dandakaaranya to fulfil the desires of his valiant father. He was accompanied by Sita and Lakshmana. The virtuous Sita is abducted to Lanka by the evil demon Ravana. I am on my way to Lanka as an emissary from Rama in search of her. This I am doing under the directions of Rama. Oh divine mother, may you be pleased to help me in the service of Rama. If you are too insistent that I should become your food, I promise you that I shall surrender myself to you after finding out where Seetha is and after taking message from Sita to Rama and paving the way for his reunion with Sita." But Devi Surasa who is capable of assuming any huge form, warned me that no one can, after being sought by her, have the power go away from her, and that was the boon given to her by divinities. Then she expanded her form and enlarged it to a width of ten Yojanas. Immediately I shrunk myself to half that size. Then she also reduced her girth to fit my size. Seeing her narrowed down mouth I reduced my size tothat of the little finger of a hand. In that thumb sized form I simply jumped in and out of the mouth of the mother of Nagas. Her

condition that I should enter her mouth was satisfied. It was only a test for me. The Divine mother took her normal form and bade me to proceed towards the fulfilment of my mission and blessed me to unite Vaidehi with Raghava, the exalted soul. She blessed me with eternal welfare and stated that she was pleased with me.Watching this wonderful episode all the elements and beings on earth praised it as a great achievement. Then once again I soared skywards and proceeded in the direction of Lanka. While moving ahead I felt as if my shadow has been captured by some eerie creature. My momentum was lost and I could not move towards any of the ten directions. I could not guess who had obliterated my path. Then I began to search if there was anything manifest anywhere blocking my forward movement. Then I looked downwards in anxiety and exhaustion. There I saw an ogress lying in the ocean. She laughed aloud shouted these words at me, even though I was not perturbed by it. “Who are you of huge body., where are you going? I am lying here without food for a long time and you will form sumptuous meal for me." I said, “Let us see” and I went to her and filled entered her mouth tight to the extent it was opened And her mouth was expanding to consume me as the food. But she was not aware of my capacity and my astuteness. I reduced the size of my body, caught hold of her heart and lifted her and jumped up in the air. And after carrying her to great heights I just relaxed my grip and let her fall back to the salty ocean. She lost her life in that fall. Then I heard the Sidhdhas and charanas moving in the aerial routes who has watched the entire episode exclaiming to one another, “ the evil ogress Simhika has been easily executed by the great Hanuman”

After sending Simhika to the abode of death, I remembered my primary duty and proceeded on my long and lonely

Page 28: Sundarakandam Sargam 58

path. Finally I saw the southern shores of the ocean where the great city of Lanka is situated. The lord of the Day, the Sun was preparing himself to call it a day, and I entered the city which is the abode of the Raakshasaas. This entry was effected me without attracting the notice of the terrible and valorous demons. While I was about to set my foot on the land of Lanka, a huge demoness of the dark hue of the clouds that appear at the time of deluge appeared before me giving out a very loud roar. Her hair was so red and it was shining like burning embers against the background of the setting sun. Shewas demanding me for an answer as to why I was entering the city and was preparing to attack me. I simply gave her a punch with my left hand and she was defeated and fell unconscious. Ientered the city while it was still twilight. The demoness who regained consciousness after sometime told me that she was the presiding deity of the city of Lanka itself come there in person and since my valour has overcome her strength, it was definite that I was about to vanquish the whole Rakshasa population of Lanka.

I spent the whole night in Lanka roaming around in search of the great daughter of Janaka. I even searched inside the harem of Ravana but could not locate the beautiful Sita. I was immersed in the ocean of sorrow which at that moment seemed impossible for me to escape from. While I was continuing my search in that utterly desolate state of mind, a garden shining like gold came to my sight. The garden was surrounded by various ornamental seating arrangements. When I entered the garden I could see large cluster of trees which formed the Ashoka Vana and in the middle of it I saw a Simsupa Tree.

Unnoticed by others, I climbed over the simsupa tree and within a short distance, I saw a garden of plantain trees with fruits of golden colour. And there I saw the inimitable Sita who could be described only by the most gifted person, now her colour having taken a blackish tint because of austerities and sorrow, her face emaciated. She was wearing a single cloth and her hair was covered

with dust. She was in utter sorrow of separation indicating that she is extremely devoted to her husband. She was surrounded by Raakshasiis who were all looking ugly and cruel, and who were always eating bloodied fresh flesh making their mouth look cruelly red, and it looked as if a beautiful female deer was surrounded by cruel group of tigresses. I saw her being berated by the demonesses with cruel words and gesticulations. She was wearing her hair in a single strand. She looked miserable, always haunted by the thoughts of her husband. She was lying on the bare earth treating it as her bed, and her body colour had lost its natural sheen, like the colour of the lotus when it is the time of mist and the Sun is not so bright. She abhorred the thoughts of Ravana and was almost on the verge of contemplating self-annihilation. Her eyes resembled a hurt doe. Ultimately I had reached her vicinity. Seeing the consort of Rama in that state, I remained atop the simsupa tree. Then I saw some commotion around and also the tinkling of anklets and hipornaments in the house of Ravana. Then I shrunk my form to the

tiniest possible way and perched on the simsapa tree like a bird. In a short while Ravana made his appearance in the Ashokavana accompanied by his multitude of wives. It was here that Sita was confined and I was sitting atop the simsupa tree.

When she saw the Lord of Rakshasaas Ravana approaching Sita folded her thighs over her body and covered her ample bosom with both her hands , and in terrible fear and sorrow was looking hither and thither. The ascetic she was, she wastrembling with fear seeing no one with whom she could seek protection. Ravana addressed her asking her not to hide her face and maintain silence but to join him in his harem. He further warned her, terming her as extremely arrogant, that if she persisted with her rigid attiude and did not accede to his wishes within two months, he would make her his food and drink her blood. On hearing the nasty and

terrible words of the evil minded demon Ravana, Sita was overcome with rage and uttered the following words, which befitted her status as an icon for womanhood.

“ You, the most wretched member of the Rakshasa clan, I am really surprised why your dirty tongue has not fallen out by itself after having uttered such words to the consort of the valiant Rama and the daughter in law of the great King Dasaratha. Fie on your valour as you have abducted me sinfully from the abode of my valouros husband when he was not present. You are in no waycould be compared with Rama in stature, and you are not even fit to be his servant. Rama possesses great scriptural knowledge, he is extremely honest and he is ready for any fight and always emerges as successful in wars and is praised greatly for that." On hearing the harsh words of the daughter of Janaka the ten-headed demon was ablaze like fire with rage and turning his cruel eyes on her lifted his fist to hit her.

When the ladies accompanying Ravana noticed that he was murderously inclined towards Seetha, they all cried in anguish. Then Mandodhari, his chief consort approached Ravana who was blind with rage and desire, and dissuaded him from such action. She told him in sweet tones, “ Why should you bother about this Sita, you are as valorous as the king of Gods Indra himself, the damsels from the Deva, Gandharva, Kinnara and Yaksha clans are keeping you company always and so you enjoy with them and what is the use of this Sita for you?”

Thus mollified, the wanderer through nights Ravana was conducted to his abode by the ladies accompanying him. Once Ravana had left, the Raakshasis surrounding Sita started berating Sita with cruel, hurtful and insulting words. And the daughter of Janaka ignored their words like pieces of grass. When the shouts of the demonesses who relished eating the dead bodies, praised Ravana and tried to persuade Sita to accept Ravana and such

words were rendered futile by their complete dismissal by Sita, the cruel beings slowly started sleeping. While the creatures were thus sleeping, Sita kept awake and was brooding over the welfare of her husband. She kept on weeping miserably and was in deep agony. Then from among the sleeping Raakshasis, one named Trijata woke up and started speaking as follows..

“You Rakshasis, protect yourself, the daughter of Janaka, the pious daughter-in-law of King Dasaratha, Sita is not going to perish. I have now seen a dream which is piteous to Ravana but is most heartening to Rama. In that dream I saw the victory of Sita’s husband and the annihilation of the Rakshasa clan. This Sita is capable of saving us, the group of Raakshasiis from the wrath of Raghava. So let us apologise to Sita beg and entreat for our protection. I think that is the appropriate action which will save our skins. When such a dream comes to me in the matter of the utterly miserable Sita, I am sure that her miseries are going to end and she will be freed from sorrows and attain great pleasure and welfare. The daughter of Janaka, Maithili, is always kind to those who approach her in total surrender.” Hearing of the forebodings of the victory of her husband, the young lady Sita was highly pleased and said that if Trijatas words became true, the Rakshasis would be given refuge.

However, seeing the present state of affairs in which sita was entangled, I was patiently sitting atop the simsupa tree and contemplating further course of action but my mind was not freed from anxiety.

I was thinking of ways and means to get an opportunity to communicate with the daughter of Janaka. I started narrating the eulogy of the race of Ikshwaaku( the ancestral lineage of Rama). Hearing the song about the glory of that race Seetha looked up with eyes filled with tears and talked to me. “ who are you and for what purpose you have come here, do tell me the foremost amongst

monkeys?. Also tell me what is the reason for your pleasant relation with Rama.” Listening to her words I replied. “O mother, the King of monkeys, Sugreeva of great valour is the friend of Rama. May you be pleased to know me as the servant of thatSugreeva, Hanuman by name, and I have come here. I have been directed by your husband Rama, the achiever of great deeds, to come here in search of you, my beloved mother. Please see this signet ring belonging to that tiger among men Rama, who has directed me to deliver this to you my mother of great virtue. Now I am waiting upon you to take your orders as to what course of action I should follow from now onwards. Please tell me what message you are ordering me to be taken to Rama and Lakshmana. Hearing this and realising my credentials after seeing the ring, the daughter of Janaka, Devi Seetha said that Rama should defeat Ravana and lead her back in honour. Taking the order of the divine mother who is of blesmishless virtue, with bowed head in supplication I pleaded for some object from her for the recognition of Rama. She gave me the wonderful jewel which adorned her head and told me to show this to Rama and assured me that he will recognize it and receive me with honour. Also she asked me to deliver her message to Rama. I mentally prostrated before her, and circumamulated the mother with great respect . Finally before giving me leave to depart, she told me. “O Hanuman, you should report to Rama all that you saw here and also my plight in a way that on hearing the tidings both Rama and Lakshmana in the company of Sugreeva would rush to Lanka to ensure my rescue. If they do not arrive within time, there will be great damage done. I am given time of two months alone by Ravana to live. If that Kaakutsa, the Rama does not come to rescue me within that time I will have to die here like an orphan.” Hearing those words, I was overcome with rage directed against Ravana. I decided in my mind what job is left for me in Lanka. My body grew to the size of a mountain. And very eager for a fight, I started inundating that favourite garden of Ravana. The

Page 33: Sundarakandam Sargam 58

animals and the birds in the garden were agitated and they started running helter skelter creating a lot of commotion. The ugly-faced demonesses who were asleep woke up hearing the din and bustle. And roaming around the garden they saw me destroying it. They rushed to Ravana and reported the bad news that an evil monkey has totally destroyed his beloved garden and that the monkey must have done it without realizing the great valour of Ravana. They represented that immediate orders should be issued for the execution of that monkey. Hearing this Ravana who is the Indra among Rakshasaas, despatched a special detachment of soldiers named Kinkaras to fight and kill me. The kinkarars in thousands, armed with tridents and barbed bludgeons marched towards me. I made ashort job of them by simply crushing most of them with an iron pestle I happened to see in the grove. Someone among them who had stealthily run away reported to Ravana about the rout of the Kinkara brigade. Now a fresh idea struck me. I proceeded towards the main mansion in the heart of the city of Lanka and killed the Rakshasas who were present there crushing them with an uprooted pillar. Further I razed the mansion which was the pride of Lanka, to the ground. Then Ravana instructed Jambumali, the son of Prahasta the minister, to handle my assault. He came for the fight accompanied by many demons who were of terrible shape. I faced the well-trained warrior and his army with an iron pestle and I made the best use of it to make mincemeat of the whole lot. The next turn to fight was awarded by Ravana to the battalion led by the sons of the ministers of Ravana, who were famed to be great fighters. Here also, they marched towards with me with a huge number of soldiers in tandem and all of them including the leaders were duly despatched by me using the good offices of the iron pestle again.

Page 34: Sundarakandam Sargam 58

The news of the departure of the sons of the ministers was duly reported to Ravana and he detailed the five leading generals of his army for further assault on me. The story was repeated and I simply killed them all along with their army. Then the ten-headed Ravana handed over the mission of annihilating me to his own son the valiant Akshakumara. He was backed up by innumerable Rakshasa soldiers. The prince was the son of Mandodari and an acclaimed expert in warfare. I just caught hold of his legs when he was jumping down in a war exercise against me , caught him between my legs, strangled him, rotated his torso a hundred times and catapulted him away completely mashed. When Akshakumara also departed to the abode of yama, Ravana called his heroic son Indrajit to face me and put an end to this macabre game. I had no difficulty in reducing the force of this Indrajit to nought, and I was really jubiliant now. But Indrajit knowing that I was invincible used the ultimate weapon, Brahmastra, which would not harm me seriously because of a boon from the Brahmadeva himself but I had to show respect to the pitamaha and the ultimate weapon and so remained bound by it for a muhurta.

Meanwhile the Raakshasaas made a thorough job of tying me up with ropes. In fact when something else was tied over the spell of the Brahmastra, the brahmastra simply withdrew its effect. But by now I was eager to meet Ravana and tell him a few words. So I pretended as if I was bound and Indrajit and his followers dragged me along the streets and presented me before their King and master. I came face to face with the evil Ravana and he interrogated me as to why I had come to Lanka and why I had killed so many Rakshasaas. I simply stated that I had come to Lanka in search of Devi Sita. I stated that I had visited his house to see if Seetha was confined there. I introduced myself to Ravana as the Son of the God of Wind, living in the shape of a monkey named Hanuman. I also made it known to him that I had come to Lanka as the emissary

Page 35: Sundarakandam Sargam 58

of the Great Hero Rama and that I was an important minister of the king of monkeys, Sugriva.

Sugriva of great eminence, has sent his good wishes to you, I informed him. He has also wished that you may tread the righteous path with right balance of Dharma, Artha and Kama. While Sugriva was living in hiding in the Rishyamooka mountains with a large number of trees, he had the benefit of gaining the friendship of Rama who is the most valorous in wars. Rama told me, oh King, that his wife Sita was abducted by a raakshasa andRama had asked the help of Sugriva in searching for that Sita. Ihave also informed Ravana of the manner in which Vali was killed. I told Ravana that Sugriva and Rama concluded an alliance of friendhip in the presence of the holy fire. Lakshmana also joined them. Vali was drawn into a fight and was killed by Rama with a single arrow. Hence the King of the monkeys is bound by friendship to help Rama is finding out the abducted Seetha. Therefore, I told Ravana, I had reached his presence in search of Sita.I told Ravana that Sugriva had asked Ravana to release Seetha to Rama without any delay. I have also conveyed to Ravana that Sugriva reminded him about the purpose of birth of Vanaras and also reminded him of the fact that monkeys are a much respected clan and often visit the devas after receiving invitation from the dwellers of heaven. Hence Ravana was cautioned not to take the King of Monkeys and his forces too lightly. Hearing this, Ravana was beyond himself with anger and cast his buring eyes on me, as if he is intent on burnig me with those eyes.. Then Ravana the terrible demon ordered that I should be executed. This that evil soul did without evaluating my valour and capacity. But Vibhishana, his brother and a person of great wisdom intervened and pleaded for more mercy in my case. He told the Kind “ Oh King, you are also a well-versed adherent to the rules of Politics and it is nowhere seen in those rules that an emissary from a

Page 36: Sundarakandam Sargam 58

foreign land can be killed. Therefore may you be pleased to abandon the idea of killing him. This emissary should be send back to report the real state of affairs to the adversary king so that he will be dissuaded from making any precipitate action against us. Even if the emissary has committed grave errors, oh King of infinite valour, he should not be killed. In shastras, they prescribe the punishment of making him ugly and matter of public laughter". Thus requested by Vibhishana, Ravana directed that my tail should be set on fire. Hearing this the ever-eager demons tied my tail with dried ropes and waste clothes and applied oil and set fire on my tail. I was dragged around the royal highway, my tail set with fire and after I was bound all around by lots of ropes, with demons making derisive shouts all around me. Then I restored my huge form and simply tore off all the ropes. Catching a huge iron pestle in my hand I managed to kill all the demons around me. Then when I reached the entrance of the city I jumped up and set fire on the top of all the mansions and pavilions and they caught fire very easily. The whole of Lanka was gutted. To my surprise the burning tail did not give me any pain or anxiety. At this stage I became anxious that since the whole of Lanka was gutted, it was possible that Devi Sita is also consumed by fire. I was for a moment overcome by grief that I had ruined the purpose of my mission and the cause of Rama by taking this hasty action. Then I happened to hear the conversation of Charanas who were talking to one another about the happy tidings that even though Lanka is burned, Seetha is safe and unaffected. The good omens all around also reinforced these words. While my tail was burning, I did not feel any pain and I was enjoying the aroma of the natural wind. Finally I dipped my tail in the ocean and doused the fire. I was relieved of my anxiety by the words of the sages and once again I went to the place where Sita was confined and met her and took her leave to depart. Then I proceeded to the peak of ArisTa mountain and from there started my journey back by jumping, in the fond hope of meeting with you all. I traversed the path

frequented by the wind, the moon, the sun, the siddas and gandharvas and have come back to you because of the greatness of Rama and because of your good wishes for me This onerous mission was accomplished by me for the sake of Sugriva my king. Now I have reported to you all that had happened after I took leave of you in my long journey in search of Sita. Now whatever is not accomplished by me in this mission should be followed up by us.”

Thus ends the narrative of Hanuman in the 54 th Sarga of Ramyanam the Aadhikaavyam of Vaalmiki

Note: While translating the slokas, I have not attempted a word by word translation in the academic way. My purpose was to reproduce the original text and a reasonably readable translation of the whole chapter in English prose. The incidents covered by the whole Sundarakandam is covered in this chapter.

After this the monkeys proceed from the southern tip of India to Kiskinda and Hanuman reports to Sri Rama about the discovery of Sita. Ramayanam continues from there to Yudhdhakandam and Uttarakandam. Rama fights a fierce war with Ravana, kills him and regains Sita. He is anointed as the King of Ayodhya… and may His Grace bless us all.
