The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Suncoast Chapter offers scholarships to graduating high school seniors and
to college/university students who reside in South Florida. Students must plan to attend or currently attend a four-year college/
university with a declared major in Communications/Broadcasting with a concentration in television in the STATE OF FLORIDA.

Interviews will be conducted on: Thursday, April 2nd, from 10:00AM – 3:00PM.
The eligibility requirements are as follows:
• Applicant must reside in South Florida and must plan to attend an accredited college or university in the
STATE OF FLORIDA.
• Be a high school graduating senior or a college student with a declared major in Communications/Broadcasting
with a concentration in television.
• Have a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
• Submit an unofficial transcript.
• Submit a resume along with the application.
• Submit a one page bio.
• Submit an essay (250 to 350 words):
Who in the TV industry serves as your role model and why? - OR -
Considering the variety of media outlets available today, what role does TV play in remaining an important
source of news and programming?
• Submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member.
Please note: The letter should attest to character attributes such as integrity and leadership.
• Participate in a personal interview with Scholarship Committee members. Be prepared to give the name of the
school you will attend and the cost of your tuition.

IRENE BERMAN, TELEVISION INDUSTRY PIONEER, HAS PASSED AWAY
Irene Berman, former President and Trustee of the National Academy of Television Arts & Science Suncoast Chapter passed away on January 17, 2015.
Irene was the first female television producer in the U.S. with a long, successful career earning many awards producing popular shows like: The Skipper Chuck Show, Miss Universe Pageant, New Year’s Eve in Miami, Getting Ready, The Orange Bowl Parade, entertainment specials, documentaries and educational programming (winner of the Ohio State award).
In 1960, Irene fought to study television (women were not permitted), finally convincing the professor to make an exception for her, winning a spot in the television class at Lindsay Hopkins School (the only Florida school teaching classes for jobs in the television industry) in Miami, FL. Irene began performing freelance production work in the burgeoning film industry in Florida in a variety of positions. In 1961, based on Irene’s experience working production in the film industry, decades of experience as an entertainer and her newly earned certificate from Lindsay Hopkins, Irene was hired by WTVJ Ch.4 in Miami to produce the Skipper Chuck Show. This was a popular children’s tv show which aired from Palm Beach to the Keys and throughout the Caribbean. As producer for the show, Irene was responsible for many innovative segment ideas, contests and other new show elements, as well as writing the script for the show. Many South Floridians who were member’s of the show’s on-camera audience still remember “Miss Irene”.Irene left WTVJ to form her own television production company “Video and Film Productions” known as “V&F Productions”.
Irene positively impacted many lives by creatively producing telethons for charities including: Muscular Dystrophy, Easter Seals, March of Dimes, United Cerebral Palsy, Children’s Cancer Caring Center, United Negro College Fund and The Miami Children’s Hospital. She felt this was meaningful and important work which she enjoyed very much, with much of what she produced being aired nationally on the national network portion of these shows, as well as internationally. Irene was instrumental in the formation of the Florida Film Office and local liaison offices in the 1970’s, and was personally responsible for helping to bring the L.A. production “Miami Vice” to Miami to shoot at the Ivan Tors Studios. Irene met often with the show’s producers, promoting South Florida. With the help of a few volunteers, Irene personally tore out metal stadium seating located at the Ivan Tors Studios before the show’s L.A. producers came to town to make it ready for filming. The rest is television history.

HANK TESTER LEAVING MIAMI’S WTVJ AFTER 22 YEARS By Mark Joyella TVSPY
Hank Tester‘s bio at NBC-owned WTVJ in Miami begins, “it has been a hell of a run and it is not over yet,” but the veteran South Florida reporter says his tenure at WTVJ is ending after 22 years. “Always classy,” said former WTVJ reporter and NBC News correspondent Kerry Sanders on Facebook. “ An era in top-notch Miami news coverage ends indeed.”
Tester joined WTVJ in 1992 just weeks before Hurricane Andrew. He’s covered countless major stories for the station since, and been honored with numerous Emmy® Awards and a NATAS Silver Circle Award. Former WTVJ anchor Bob Mayer described Tester as “a kind and honest man, a true journalist, (and) a great storyteller.”
Tester takes decades of experience—and his signature roll cue, “let’s take a look,”—as he leaves TVJ.
BRIAN ANDREWS HAS LEFT CBS4 MIAMI
Reporter Brian Andrews has left WFOR. Andrews came to CBS4 Miami in 2012. Prior to his return to South Florida, he spent several years in Latin America reporting stories about lifestyle and culture and runnng the English language operations of one of Colombia’s largest broadcasters. His work with RCN made him one of the most recognized “gringos” in Colombia.
Before joining RCN, Brian spent time as a consultant for Caracol Television and as a freelance Correspondent for CBS New, CBS Radio and The Miami Herald.
For more than a decade, Brian was one of the most popular news anchors and reporters on South Florida television. Whether it was breaking news, politics, a huge international story, or a major storm, viewers of WSVN7 and CBS4 were used to seeing Brian on the story. He has reported from Cuba, Chile, Colombia, the Bahamas, Belize, Haiti, Italy, Israel, Jamaica, Panama, Venezuela, Peru, Thailand, Sri Lanka and throughout the Caribbean.
In 2012, Brian was named Best TV News Reporter by the Miami New Times. The New Times wrote of Brian, “Few television reporters in South Florida offer more charisma or insider knowledge of the region than Andrews. The dude is 100 percent elan, and his vibe perfectly fits Miami and Broward. He pulses with color. And Andrews’ stories, whether detail the latest on a murder or a major storm or some international intrigue, always go further to bring us the news we need now.”

WESH NAMES SUMMER KNOWLES By Aneya Fernando TVSPY Summer Knowles has joined the Orlando NBC affiliate WESH news team.
Knowles left Miami’s WFOR in December, where she was an anchor/reporter, after two-and-a-half years at the CBS-owned station.
“Summer is an outstanding journalist with a fantastic ability to deliver breaking news fast and accurately,” said WESH news director Kirsten Wolff. “Her presence and personality will shine on-air and in our newsroom.”
ADRIAN WHITSETT JOINS WESH AS WEEKEND EVENING CO-ANCHOR
Adrian Whitsett will join Summer Knowles as co-anchor of the WESH weekend evening news.
Whitsett previously worked at Omaha ABC affiliate KETV. Whitsett is an an Iraq veteran.
“Adrian’s experiences as a Marine and as a seasoned journalist give him a unique point of view that will connect with Central Florida’s large military community,” said WESH news director Kirsten Wolff.
MIAMI REPORTER TO ANCHOR IN NEW ORLEANS By Kevin Eck TVSPY
Adrianna Hopkins has joined New Orleans NBC affiliate WDSU as an anchor for the 5:00 and 10:00 p.m. news.
Hopkins comes from WSVN in Miami. She started her career at WRAL in Raleigh, N.C. She has also worked at WGXA in Macon, Ga. and WHAS in Louisville, Ky.
“Adrianna’s background is ideal for New Orleans,” said WDSU news director Jonathan Shelley. “She’s skilled and experienced at bringing home the big story, and as everyone knows, we have plenty of those here in NOLA. We’re excited to have her join our team.”

WDSU REPORTER NAMED WEEKEND ANCHOR By Kevin Eck TVSPY
Gina Swanson has been named weekend evening anchor for New Orleans NBC affiliate WDSU.
Swanson had been anchoring weekends on an “interim” basis. She started at WDSU in 2008 as a general assignment reporter. She’s also worked in Monroe, La. and Austin, Texas.
“We’re thrilled to have someone with Gina’s experience and deep local roots anchoring ournewscasts, said WDSU news director Jonathan Shelley. “Gina knows news and New Orleans inside and out. She truly defines the term ‘broadcast journalist.’”
JUAN KINCAID TO JOIN WVUE By Kevin Eck TVSPY
Juan Kincaid is joining WVUE as sports director.
Kincaid left New Orleans CBS affiliate WWL in mid-January. He takes the place of Fred Hickman, who has left the New Orleans FOX affiliate.
“We couldn’t be more excited to have Juan join our award-winning sports team,” said Mikel Schaefer, WVUE’s news director, in the news release. “He’s a talented, hard-working journalist who has great storytelling skills. Whether it’s the Saints, Pelicans, LSU, Tulane or prep sports, Juan brings passion to covering all sports, and is very well respected by viewers and his peers.”
Kincaid must sit out a noncompete clause in his WWL contract, and will work behind the scenes at WVUE until making his July debut on WVUE’s newscasts.
“I had the pleasure of bringing Juan to the New Orleans market more than a dozen years ago, so I am thrilled to be working with him again,” said Sandy Breland, group vice president for the Alabama-based station group Raycom Media, which manages WVUE for Tom Benson‘s Louisiana Media Co., and former WWL news director. “He embraced New Orleans from day one and has a passion for this area that reflects our team at Fox 8.”
