Installation of a Sunbeam Symmetrical system (‘east-west’ configuration). > see p. 5-6
This installation guide describes the installation of Sunbeam Nova systems for mounting solar modules on flat roofs.
Installation always needs to be based on a configuration and ballast plan generated by the Sunbeam Calculator software.
Please keep a copy of the configuration and ballast plan and this installation guide with your project documentation.
If you have any questions about the installation, please contact Sunbeam BV (for contact details see last page).

Base unitsThe base units support the system. They are available in several lengths, enabling you to vary the distance between the rows.
CarriersAttach the carriers to the base units to form a stable triangular base for mounting the solar panels.
Ballast racks and wind platesIn addition to carrying ballast and deflecting wind, these planar elements have an important secondary function: they reinforce the system’s matrix configuration.

Preparation and safety
• Make sure the roof is empty and clean.• Make sure the delivery is complete.• Work accurately and systematically.• Don’t place heavy pallets directly on the roof.
The local load on the roof may become very high.
• Beware of parts and packaging blowing away in the wind and sharp-edged parts damaging the top layer of the roof.
• Always observe adequate safety measures, such as placing bannisters along the roof edge.
• The roofing construction needs to be strong enough to carry the weight of the entire solar energy installation in addition to the regular wind, water and snow loads.

Sizing tool
The sizing tool enables you to place the base units at exactly the required distance from each other.
Adjust the sizing tool by sliding the flanges protruding from the plastic sliders up against the side edges of the solar panels. Firmly tighten the screws at the bottom of the slider. If you don’t have a solar panel at hand, you can adjust the sizing tool using a measuring tape.
Configuration and ballast plan
Every Sunbeam project plan includes a configuration and ballast plan (for each individuel array of solar modules), which is prepared using the Sunbeam Calculator software. This picture shows the positions where ballast racks are needed. The numbers indicate the number of tiles to be placed in the racks. Boxes without numbers represent empty ballast racks used to facilitate installation. It is possible to use several types of ballast tiles, allowing for a large range of weights. Always make sure that the actual weight of the tiles matches the weight prescribed in the configuration and ballast plan!
Only systems that are installed according to a configuration and ballast plan generated with the current version of the Sunbeam Calculator at the time of ordering the system, are eligible for the Sunbeam product warranty. For more information about the warranty terms and conditions: see last page.
• The roofing material needs to be in good condition and should be able to withstand the maximum local pressure under the Sunbeam feet. When required, the maximum pressure can be lowered by placing additional feet under the system.
• Always ensure proper drainage of water under the system. When obstacles or gravel are blocking the free flow of water the system may be heightened with rubber blocks.
When in doubt about any of the above points please
consult a structural engineer or roofing expert.

Ensure that the entire system is straight and squared, using tools such as a folding square or a laser, or by drawing a ‘3-4-5 triangle’. Always use the sizing tool to make sure the base units are at the correct distance from each other.
A triangle with sides of 3, 4 and 5 metres always has a square angle.
1. Placing the feet and the base units
Sunbeam Nova Universal
Place the base units on the roof in the order indicated in the configuration and ballast plan. Each row is terminated (at the northern end) with an additional foot.Caution: Do not assemble the base units yet!
Attach the ballast racks using the short screws. Tighten the screws firmly, but take care not to strip the thread.
Attach one foot per base unit by clicking it into place at the end without connector. The holes in the base unit line up with the ribs of the feet.
Repeat this with the end block at the opposite side. When assembling a Universal system, you must first carefully bend the carrier until it assumes the correct angle.
1. Insert the connector into the next base unit until it is up against the stop.2. Insert the yellow end block into the slit. 3. Push outwards to align the screw holes.
Attach the end blocks to the base units with the short screws. Make sure that the base units are inserted all the way, and that all the holes are aligned properly!

5. Placing solar panels
When placing a solar panel, pay attention to the lip at the end of the carrier, which prevents the solar panels from falling down between the carriers.
Sunbeam Nova end clamps can be used universally for panels ranging from 23 to 46 mm in thickness. Fit the clamps using the long clamp screws.

6. Finishing
The small hole above the central rib in the foot can be used for grounding the system or for attaching cable conduits.
Mount the wind plates at the backside of the carriers. Wind plates may overlap.Fix them in place with the short screws.
Tie cables running between panels with the cable clips. Additional cable clips can be ordered separately.
The mid clamps ensure a 10 mm gap between the panels. Fit them with the long clamp screws as well.
Place the ballast. To prevent bending of the ballast racks, put the ballast as much to the sides as possible.
