Summit Middle School has been recognized as a Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Distinguished School for providing broad access to transformative learning opportu- nities for students through PLTW Gateway. It is one of just 176 middle schools across the U.S. to receive this honor. PLTW is a nonprofit organization that serves millions of PreK-12 students and teachers in over 12,200 schools across the U.S. The PLTW Distinguished School recognition honors schools committed to increasing student ac- cess, engagement, and achievement in their PLTW programs. To be eligible for the designation, Summit Middle School had to meet the following criteria: Offer at least one PLTW Gateway unit at each grade level; Have more than 50 percent of the student body participating during the 2019-20 school year; Have 25 percent of students advancing to high school participate in two or more units, Have strategies and supports in place that support reasonably proportional representation with regard to race, ethnicity, pov- erty, gender and can support such claims with relevant data. Through PLTW programs, students develop STEM knowledge as well as in-demand, transportable skills that they will use both in school and for the rest of their lives, on any career path they take. PLTW Gateway empowers students to lead their own discovery and uncover a range of paths and possibilities they can look forward to in high school and beyond. PLTW courses are taught by Mr. Force (SMS Tech Ed teacher) and Ms. Bloom & Ms. Jenkins (SMS Computer Science teachers). Summit Named a Project Lead The Way Distinguished School in 2019-2020 May 2020

Summit Middle School has been recognized as a Project Lead The Way (PLTW)

Distinguished School for providing broad access to transformative learning opportu-

nities for students through PLTW Gateway. It is one of just 176 middle schools

across the U.S. to receive this honor. PLTW is a nonprofit organization that serves

millions of PreK-12 students and teachers in over 12,200 schools across the U.S.

The PLTW Distinguished School recognition honors schools committed to increasing student ac-

cess, engagement, and achievement in their PLTW programs. To be eligible for the designation, Summit Middle School

had to meet the following criteria:

Offer at least one PLTW Gateway unit at each grade level;

Have more than 50 percent of the student body participating during the 2019-20 school year;

Have 25 percent of students advancing to high school participate in two or more units,

Have strategies and supports in place that support reasonably proportional representation with regard to race, ethnicity, pov-

erty, gender and can support such claims with relevant data.

Through PLTW programs, students develop STEM knowledge as well as in -demand, transportable skills that they will use

both in school and for the rest of their lives, on any career path they take. PLTW Gateway empowers students to lead their

own discovery and uncover a range of paths and possibilities they can look forward to in high school and beyond.

PLTW courses are taught by Mr. Force (SMS Tech Ed teacher) and Ms. Bloom & Ms. Jenkins (SMS Computer Science

teachers).

Counselors Corner

For Advisory this month, all Falcons will be discussing our school-wide theme of Connected-

ness.” Students will discuss with their peers and Advisory teachers how they are connected

to others at school and in the community. All grade levels will talk about growth over the year

and how they can be more involved at Summit and in the Fort Wayne community. Each team

will be encouraged to work on community service projects during the month of May. Students

and staff are being asked to think, “How can I be of service to those around me?” this month.

Registration Day at Summit Middle School is Wednes-day, July 29th, from 8:00am - 8:00pm. Yearbook pictures will be taken this same day as well.

Online registration opens July 20th, and should be completed prior to Registration Day. Look for details about registration and more in the coming weeks.

It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge. - Albert Einstein

We want to give a shout out to Summit’s terrific group of teachers. They work hard every day to provide a positive, consistent and caring environment for our students. We can’t be with our teachers right now, but we appreciate their commitment and dedication to providing the best educational expe-rience possible. THANK YOU, Summit Teachers!

Athletic News We continue to wait and watch for guidance on activities such as athletics. In the meantime, we

encourage all Falcons to exercise in some way on a regular basis. Mrs. Stemen and Mr. Veith have

taught you a number of body-weight activities in PE that could be used in the home, and there are

many 30-minute fitness videos to be found online as well.

Wrestlers: many of you still have your uniform from this past season. We will be collecting those in

May when we collect laptops. Please put the uniform in a bag labeled with your name, or pin a la-

bel to the uniform itself.

Fall Athletes: please continue to watch for information concerning camps, running clubs, tryouts,

clinics, etc.

PLEASE NOTE: New information was released by the IHSAA relative to sports physicals:

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic during the 2019-2020 school year and the continued stress

on the medical community, effective immediately, valid physical and consent forms for eligi-

ble students during the 2019-2020 school year shall be valid during the upcoming 2020-

2021 school year.

As more information is shared with us regarding 2020-2021 sports activities, we’ll be sure to pass

it along to the Falcon community.

A Note from Nurse Lund…

Please review this chart for the re-

quired and recommended school im-

munizations, and contact me at

[email protected] with any ques-

tions you may have. Please have all

immunizations completed and docu-

mented prior to your child’s first day

Summit PTC!

The library media center will be collecting library books at the same time that student laptops are re-turned May 21-28. To re-fresh their memories about books they currently have checked out, students can login to Destiny Discover using the link on the SMS Media Center’s Canvas page. Students experiencing problems accessing Destiny Discover accounts can use Canvas messages to contact Mrs. Kittaka or Mr. Moore. After collecting books, the media center will store them “in quarantine” for a period of time before handling them, so families should expect a delay before seeing the books checked in from student ac-counts. Because the SMS Library Media Center does not charge penalty fines for overdue books, students and fami-lies should not worry that a book is marked overdue.

Summit Middle School is lucky enough to have a great group of parents who make up our

PTC. They take such good care of our teachers and staff, providing meals and snacks,

helping in the office, and so much more.

So, THANK YOU, for all your hard work and effort this past school year. We appreciate

it, and all of you, so much, and look forward to seeing you again soon!
