Assistant Principal’s Corner- by Lisa Aqenneni

Welcome back to school, Summerwind families. I am the new Assistant Principal

and have received a very warm welcome from staff, students and parents. This is

going to be a great year of growth for our students!

This month I will focus will be on our driving and parking habits on campus. As

you all know, we have limited parking and driving access on campus. We all need

to be extra careful of our children and other cars when you are dropping off and

picking up students. Please be patient with the other drivers as they navigate our

driveways and parking lots. This year, our front parking lot is for pick up/drop off

of our kindergarten students only. For all other students, please utilize our valet

drop off area.

In the kindergarten parking lot, please be aware of the crosswalks and red curbs.

These areas must be kept clear so traffic flow can move along in a safe timely

manner. Also, remember be on the lookout for our young students running be-

tween cars. Again, remember to be patient with other drivers and pedestrians

during this time so it will be a safe process for all.

If you pick up or drop off your child in the valet area in the rear northwest back

parking lot, please do not park in any crosswalks or by red curbs. Again, we want

to have a safe timely flow of traffic . Our campus supervisors are there to assist

with the drop off/pick up of your students in a safe manner. Please do not call

your student to run across the line of cars, please walk over to the dismissal gate

to get your student. If you are using our valet area, please again be patient and

watch for our students crossing the flow of traffic.

We are all here for the well being and safety of our students. Working together,

we can help each other to ensure our pick up and drop time times run smoothly

and safely. If you encounter a situation that you feel needs our attention please

feel free to contact the office.

I hope you and your students have had a great start to the new year! I look for-

ward to serving the families of Summerwind this year.

KINDERGARTEN NEWS Hello Parents, Wow! We made it through the first week of Kindergarten! Thank you for the support as we begin our year with learning the basics of following school rules and classroom procedures. We are also working on name writing, ABC's, counting, writing numbers 0-10, and colors and shapes. Please continue to practice these skills at home with your child along with the proper way to hold a pencil and scissors. If you have not yet signed up for the Remind app, please do so as soon as possible. It is an excellent tool to communicate with your child's teacher and stay up to date with Summerwind's calendar of events. We are all looking forward to a fabulous year of learning watching our "Kinder Garden" grow!

Sincerely, The Kinder & TK Team

First Grade News

Welcome back to school...First Graders!!! We are so happy you are here at Summerwind for your First Grade year. Each month, please look here for more information about what is going on in First Grade. You have an awesome First Grade team of teachers...Mrs. Campos, Mrs. Garcia, Ms. Granger and Mrs. Jones. For the month of September, you will be learning our Routines for Learning in your classroom. Being a good listener is KEY to learning as a first grader. We have started Eureka Math Module 1 Sums and Differences to 10. You can learn more at home about your daily lessons if you go to greatminds.com. We have started our Phonics Mastery lessons for CVC words (fun, bat, hug, etc). Most students do pretty well at this booklet as it is a review of Kinder reading....but it will get harder...so listen, practice and participate, kids! Remem-ber to be consistent with pick up locations for after school as changes can cause problems. So, again...welcome back! It's going to be a GREAT SCHOOL YEAR!!!!

Active Listeners

Have eyes on the speaker Maintain a quiet body Use appropriate expressions and show interest Be patient while the speaker chooses what to say, give enough wait time Think carefully about what the speaker is saying Students are required to be an Active Listener on our campus, walking in line, at P.E., in the library or cafete-ria and during recess. The students are also learning about reading and writing stations in the classrooms. In the area of math, we

are working on arrays, repeated addition, commutative property of multiplication and distributive proper-

ty. The students are encouraged to memorize their multiplication facts. They should have their 2’s, 5’s, and

10’s memorized, and then begin memorizing their 3’s and 4’s. We are very excited for a great year of learn-

ing!
