Summertime
VISITOR
THE VINE
STREET
Vine Street Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) June 2014 Telephone: 217/543-2292; Email: [email protected] 2014, No. 6
The approaching summer reminds me of George Gershwin’s song,
“Summertime.” The lyrics and the laid-back melody signal a change of pace: “Summertime, and the livin' is easy. Fish are jumpin' and the cotton is high.” Folks are invited to relax a little more, to breathe
deeply, and to enjoy the sights and sounds of the changing season. The summer may give us increased opportunities for fellowship, as
neighbors linger over front porch conversations during the season’s longer days. We may listen more attentively to one another and learn new things about friends and neighbors who we’ve known for years.
Our sense of well-being may increase as winter’s isolation fades through this increased contact. We may obtain a deeper sense of the
richness that comes from “knowing and being known” by God through these acts of fellowship and acceptance by God’s people. St. Paul talks about the gift of knowing and being known in 1 Corin-
thians 13:12: “For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.” One of the deepest needs that humans have is to
connect with our Creator in a way that lets us know that we are loved to the core of our being. It takes time to develop this growing sense of
intimacy with God, and it is a process that continues throughout our lives – until we go home to be with our Lord. In the meantime, we can catch glimpses of this divine closeness in loving Christian interactions
with other people. The Reverend Nicole Chilivis quotes Richard Rohr as she writes about this process in The Christian Century: “‘Such perfect receiving
is what transforms us. Being totally received as we truly are is what we wait and long for all of our lives.’ A mysterious power is often felt in
moments of listening. Something shifts. When a human being looks in-to another’s eyes, accepting even the broken or unsavory parts, it evokes a deep and abiding hope.”
As we interact with each other this summer, let us discover this deep and abiding hope that is just a foretaste of what we’ll experience
in eternity with God.

OUTDOOR SERVICE ON JUNE 8! We will hold outdoor worship in the church courtyard on June 8. You are invited to walk & ride bikes & golf carts to church, as Park Street between Vine and Walnut will be blocked off. Bring lawn chairs, too! This is an early Father’s Day celebration, and fathers and sons will be honored. The After Church Lunch Bunch will be held outside on tables provided by the Pumpkin Patch. The pulled pork/fried chicken meal will be catered, and the cost is $5.00 per person or $15 per family. Write “June 8” on the pew pad, or add your name to the sign-up sheet on the L-table by June 1 if you’d like to come.
Worship Notes
Even though Children’s Sunday School is out for the summer, we will continue to follow the lectionary. The scriptures and sermon titles are listed below. June 1: 1 Peter 4:12-14; 5:6-11 Casting Cares June 8: 1 Corinthians12:3b-13 Gifting in God June 15: 2 Corinthians 13:11- 13; Holy Kisses June 22: Matthew 10:24-39; Sparrows & Swords June 29: Matthew 10:40-42; The Righteous Brothers (& Sisters)
PENTECOST OFFERING: The Pentecost Offering, which sup-ports the establishment of new Disciples of Christ congrega-tions, will be received June 1 and June 8. This is the second year that the churches in our Lakeland Cluster have asked each other to set an individual church goal for the Pentecost Offering. Then, these individual goals are combined to create a collective goal for the Cluster. Our church’s contribution to the collective Lakeland Cluster goal (of $3,200) is $150. The purpose of this multi-church effort is to demonstrate our solidarity with other Disciples churches in our area as we work together “To be and to share the Good News of Jesus Christ, witnessing, loving and serving from our doorsteps ‘to the ends of the earth.’ - Acts 1:8.”

MISSION TRIP PLANNED FOR JUNE 26-27
On November 17, 2013, an F-4 tornado destroyed homes
and businesses in Washington, Illinois, injuring dozens and kill-
ing one person. Since that time, Bethany Community Church has
been working with churches and concerned citizens to provide
community relief by coordinating work teams and cleanup crews.
Vine Street Christian Church is one of the churches who
will be helping with these efforts. A mission trip is planned for
Thursday, June 26 – Friday, June 27, 2014. All ages are wel-
come. Children under 14 will work with an adult in a donation
center. Others may assist with debris cleanup in the community.
Workers can choose to work one or two days. Those who work
both days can stay Thursday night at Eureka College.
There will be an informational meeting at the church on
Tuesday night, June 10, at 7:00 in the Genesis Room. If you’d
like to go on the trip, come to the meeting,
and/or add your name to the pew pad or
the sign-up sheet on the L-table. See

BARBERSHOP SINGERS ANNUAL SHOW
By their support, long time area church friends
have made it possible for the Coles County Barber-
shop Chorus to have a meaningful community out-
reach. Through Christmas and Easter (Lenten) Bene-
fit Concerts and Singing Valentines, the group raises
annually nearly $8,000 for area food pantries, home-
less shelters and high school vocal music programs.
Performing at church worship services provides an
opportunity for the CCC to not only praise the Lord,
but also to thank congregations for their encourage-
ment.
On Saturday, June 7th at 4:00 PM in the Dvorak
Concert Hall on the EIU Campus, the 30 man chorus
and four local quartets will perform their 45th Annual
Summer Show, “Barbershop Buccaneers...Pirates.” It
is their only moneymaker for the year. As always, it
will be a fun filled program, for folks of all ages and
it will be FAMILY FRIENDLY.
The guest quartet, Premium Blend, comes from
Kansas City and were Semi-Finalists in the Interna-
tional Contest last summer in Toronto. The site has
adequate parking and wheel chair accessibility. Tick-
ets can be purchased at Coldwell Banker (Charleston)
and at either Porter Auto Body locations (Mattoon
and Charleston). On line tickets are sold at
www.colescountychorus.org. Ron Hawkins, Ticket
Chairman, can be reached at 217-276-3312.
