A Note to Parents/Guardians

Welcome! For many of you, this is the first time your son/daughter is away from home for a significant period of time. We understand that this can be an exciting and apprehensive time both for parents and students. In this section, we hope to provide you with useful information and give you a better idea of what to expect in the areas that matter most to you. If you have any questions that we have not answered here, please visit the Contact Us page for email and phone details.

UVM’s Summer Academy program is an opportunity for the most achieved and mature young students to experience life on campus while gaining college credit. Our Summer Academy students are evaluated by the same academic standards as UVM undergraduate students, so the students who have applied to our program have shown us they have demonstrated the intellectual ability to succeed in the course they have chosen in our program.

When students are not in class or engaged in homework or other class assignments, they are encouraged to take advantage of a full calendar of co-curricular activities and academic and social events. We do require them to participate in the residential activities and workshops, unless there is a valid reason they cannot attend. We encourage participation from all students even if they just go to watch.

Independence is central to the UVM Summer Academy experience and this may be new grounds for many of our young students. They will need to find within themselves self-discipline to manage their time, set their priorities, and to be mindful of such things like eating balanced meals, getting enough sleep and doing their own laundry – all without parental assistance. This will be a wonderful opportunity for many of these young students to manage some of these skills in a well-supported environment of our staff and their peers.

We hope that the rigors of our academic program, the learning environment we provide and the supportive team which encompasses our overall program, will prepare your student for their college experience. Below is a quote from a couple of our Summer Academy students this year when asked:

Q: What would you tell your friends about the UVM Summer Academy program?

“The course was very fun, informative, and well-taught, many of the activities were incredibly fun, and the experience of dorm living with a group of really great people was one of the best things I've ever experienced.”

“It was so much fun, and I met a lot of great people. It also showed how much work college classes can be.”

A couple of things in closing I want to thank you for sharing your student with us this summer, we hope your son/daughter enjoys the program and we hope you are able to relax and enjoy

while he/she is away. On that note, I wanted to mention that UVM does have 24 law enforcement and security services on campus and we have blue light poles with phones all over campus that go directly to campus police if there was ever an emergency. As a policy we ask that students only leave their dorms with their RA’s for evening activities and if students are outside for a recreational activity they need to be in the dorm by 10pm curfew.

Please let us know if you have any questions. Thank you again for a great summer.

Campus Living Standards and Expectations

Your safety is important to us and it should also be important to you, so please be responsible and use these preventative measures to keep safety at the forefront when living in a campus community.

Always keep your dorm room locked, whether you are in the room or out of the room

Do not allow unfamiliar people in the residence halls (even if you are just paying for a pizza you ordered – greet them at the entrance with your money)

Always keep bathroom doors/stalls locked Do not go in to unoccupied dorm rooms, even if they are unlocked Do not prop open entrance doors/fire doors – the alarm will sound off. And this

goes back to not allowing unfamiliar people to enter the residence halls. Always report any suspicious activity or person acting suspicious to a member of

the Summer Academy staff. Be sure your items are not placed in front of your doorway/hallway so if you had

to escape quickly you could. Another words, keep your areas clean and tidy.

Free time guidelines:

Students are allowed to leave campus during their free time. However, students are not permitted to leave campus by themselves—they must be accompanied by a program assistant. Students must return before any scheduled activity and no later than curfew. Failure to follow these guidelines may result in discipline and possible removal from the program.

If a parent or guardian is in town and would like to spend time with their son or daughter or if the student would like to visit relatives or family friends within city limits, it must be scheduled during the student's free time when there are no activities planned. The student must return to the dorm by 10pm curfew. In addition, the student’s parent or guardian must send written permission via email to Nichole Hathaway at least 48 hours before the student is planning to leave campus. The email should include details about the visit, such as the time that the student will leave and return to campus, and the cell phone number of the relative or family friend the student will be with.

Students are not allowed to miss any class time and there are no overnight absences for Summer Academy residential students.

Residential Policies

Curfew Policy - all students must be in the residence hall between the hours of 10:00 PM & 7:00 AM. RAs will check with students in their dorm room at 10:00 PM to ensure that all students are in the building. Any students who are not in place will be reported as absent.

Students are not allowed to leave campus without a residential assistant.

Safety and Supervision

Harris-Millis is staffed with a Resident Director (RD) and several carefully selected Resident Assistants (RA) 24 hours 7 days a week. The RAs live on each floor with the students and accompany them on all program activities. Standard curfew is 10 pm. Many planned activities are mandatory. For all non-mandatory elective activities, students will be required to submit their preferences on an attendance log so whereabouts can be monitored. During free-time, students are allowed to leave campus as long as they are accompanied by an RA.

UVM also maintains a full-time professional police department to assist in the event of an emergency.
