Ive got two best friends. We used to play together at school and at weekends, but now there is a problem. The other two live in the same street and they go to tennis club together. They spend lots of time together, and I feel left out. Please help me. Ellen, age 11. Answer

I dont like my hair because it looks boring. I want to look beautiful like a film star! But I dont know how to do it. How can I get a beautiful hair style? Lily, age 12. Answer

I am unhappy at school. There is a group of boys who are mean to me. They ask me for money, but I havent got any. They say horrible things to me at breaktime, and they

say to other boys, Dont play with him!. I used to play foot-ball at breaktime and lunchtime, but now no one wants to play with me. Please help me.

    Max, age 11. Answer

My dad is always cross with me. He thinks I dont work hard at school, but I do! I used to get good marks in Maths, but now I always get bad marks. Maths is my worst subject! When I get my test marks, he always says, That isnt good enough. You need to work harder. What should I do? Ben, age 12. Answer

Pam says: Not everyone can look

like a film star! But you can improve your hair style. First, you need some ideas. Look at magazines and choose some hairstyles that you like. Ask a friend to help you. Then go to the hairdresser. Ask the hairdresser to help you choose the best style for you.

Pam says: Your dad wants you to get good

marks at school. He doesnt understand that Maths is difficult for you. Talk to him. Tell him youre working hard and you want to get good marks. You should talk to your Maths teacher too. Perhaps your teacher can give you some extra help. And perhaps your dad can help you with your Maths homework. Good luck!

Pam says: Three is a difficult number.

Often one person feels left out. You want to spend time with your best friends, but you need other friends too. What is your favourite sport or activity? Can you join a club? Try to play with other children at school and at weekends. You will soon make more friends.

Pam says: This is a serious problem.

The boys are bullying you. You mustnt give them any money! You need to talk to someone about the bullying. Who can you talk to - your parents, a teacher, or an older child, perhaps? Tell them what is happening, and they can help you decide what to do. This bullying must stop!

When it snows, very tiny ice crystals fall from the sky. As they fall, they join together with other crystals to make snowflakes. Then the snowflakes join together with other snowflakes to make bigger snowflakes. Snowflakes usually have six sides, but all snowflakes are different. They are often very complex and beautiful.

    1

In the high mountains you can find rivers of ice. They are made of snow. The snow is compressed and becomes ice. This is called a glacier. A glacier moves very slowly down a valley, towards the sea. Some glaciers are very small, and some are enormous. They can be very thick some glaciers are as high as 60 school buses! You find glaciers all round the world, even in hot countries near the equator but only high in the mountains. Glacier ice covers about 11% of the surface of the earth. If all the glaciers in the world melted, it would be a big problem: sea levels would go up about 90 metres!

    2

When a glacier goes into the sea, it becomes an iceberg and floats in the water. There are five sizes of iceberg. The smallest is the size of a car and the biggest is the size of an oil tanker. Most of an iceberg is under the water, so icebergs are always much bigger than they look. Icebergs are very dangerous to ships. On 14th April 1912, the famous ship the Titanic sank less than three hours after it hit an iceberg. More than 1500 people died.

Sometimes a loud noise or an earthquake can make a mass of snow and ice come loose and fall down the side of a mountain. The snow gets faster and faster and after a few seconds it can be moving as fast as 130kph. This is an avalanche, and they are very dangerous. Every year, people die in avalanches. The worst avalanche in history happened in Peru, in South America, on 31st May 1970. At 3:23 pm, many people in the city of Yungay were watching a World Cup football match on TV. Suddenly, there was a terrible earthquake. The city was destroyed. Then there was a massive avalanche.

1 Duck races started in 2002.

2 In 2007, there were 165 000 ducks in the Great British Duck Race.

3 In 1992, lots of plastic toys fell into the Atlantic Ocean.

Have you ever been to a duck race? It sounds strange, but racing ducks in rivers is a popular way to raise money for charity. The ducks arent real they are toy ducks, made of plastic. The first duck race in the USA took place in 1988. In the same year, there was a duck race in Stockbridge in Scotland. Now there are duck races all around the world. People pay money to adopt a plastic duck. Then thousands of ducks are put into the river. The winning duck is the first one to arrive at the finishing line. The person who adopted the winning duck wins a prize. There is a duck race in Singapore every year. In 2002, they raced 123 500 ducks. That was a world record. In 2007, the Great British Duck Race in London broke the record when they raced 165 000 ducks!

And here is another story about plastic ducks. In 1992, some boxes of toys fell off a ship into the Pacific Ocean. The boxes broke open, and the toys floated away. There were about 29 000 toys in total. Most of them were ducks, but there were some frogs, turtles and beavers too. Some of the toys floated south, towards Australia and South America, but most of them floated north. Some of the toys were found in Alaska and Canada. Eight years later, in 2000, some ducks were found in Iceland. Why did they take so long to get to Iceland? Scientists think they got stuck in the ice! In 2003, some of the toys floated to Europe, and some floated to the east coast of the USA. Many of the toys have visited three oceans: the Pacific, the Arctic and the Atlantic! Scientists are very interested in the toys. They want to know when and where people find the ducks, because they can get a lot of information about how the oceans move.
