New Generation is in the final stages
of fundraising in order to build its
second transitional apartment. We
have received funding from the
McIninch Foundation, Agnes M.
Lindsay Trust, and Samuel P. Hunt
Foundation, and are preparing to
start the first phases of construction
thanks to their support.
The apartment will have the capac-
ity to serve an extra two women and
two children in their own separate
space. This is a more long-term
transition that is intended for women who are ready to take the next step towards self-
sufficiency, as they must be able to pay a modest rent, be in school or work full-time, and
be able to function independently. In addition to a place to live, they will also receive
case management from staff geared towards finding them a permanent and affordable
home of their own.

New Generation To Build New Transitional Apartment
A Note from Golf Chairperson Beverly Barney Dear Friends,
I want to thank every single Golf Tournament sponsor, donor, and player from the past 9 years! With all of your support we were able to provide so much more for mothers and babies, especially to help with their education and caring for the babies. This year is our 10th year to celebrate Ruthie's dream.
Thanks from my heart,
Beverly Barney, Golf Chairperson

Dear friends,
The Board, Staff, and Volunteers have been busy over the past year working hard to help each woman and child meet their potential. In the past year, we have not only provided 3,893 nights of
shelter to women and children in need - but also 11,000+ meals, and 250 hours of one-on-one case management services designed to help each woman meet her goals. Your support has enabled us to continue to serve our mission 365 days a year, “to provide a safe, family-oriented shelter for homeless pregnant women and their babies, helping to prepare and empower them to be successful in life.”
I cannot thank you all enough for your ongoing support of New Generation, and want to speak a little bit about why I support New Generation as well. I personally be-came involved as a Board Member back in 2006, and have found that it is a very rewarding experience work-ing with an organization that has the most complete approach to providing for the needs of homeless women and children, and the best “all-encompassing” approach to lifting family units out of poverty and into sustainable healthy family units. Each time I realize that we truly are creating a NEW GENERATION of families that will perpetuate the NEXT generation, it validates the work that our staff, volunteers, residents and board complete each day here at New Generation.
As you know, we are currently working to build a second transitional apartment at New Generation. We have secured the first 70% of the funds necessary for this project. However, we need to secure the final 30% so that we meet the full funding of this very important initiative. While most of us don't have the ability to simply gift someone a new home, this project allows a collective group of us to provide a home to women and children in need. If you feel so moved to help us with this endeavor, please make a donation today in the envelope provided, online at www.newgennh.org, or call or email Jen Bisson, Executive Director of Fundraising at (603) 436-4989 or [email protected]. If you want to do even more after making your donation, please consider joining the Board of Directors. We have openings currently and are looking for people who want to roll up their sleeves to help with fundraising and leadership. Some of our Board members have provided their perspective of serving in this capacity, as you will see in our Volunteer Corner above.
Please consider donating some of your treasure and talent today. YOU will truly make a difference in the lives of homeless women and children that will last forever.
Tracy Hardekopf, President, Board of Directors
Board Members are Volunteers too!
We currently have openings on the Board of Directors, which
consists of a group of dedicated volunteers, who donate their
time, talent, and treasure to help ensure the future of New
Generation for generations to come.
Highlights from current Board Members:
“Women benefit from a program that not only provides shelter,
but teaches the skills needed to succeed on their own, while being
the best parent they can be.” -Erin Williams, Board Member
“As a parent, I realize the importance of early nurturing as a benchmark for success in
life. Many of these women are in dire need of support at this very difficult time; and to
foster a "new generation" of healthy individuals, we as individuals and a community can
provide much needed support." -Susan Von Hemert, Board Member
To learn more about joining the Board of Directors, please contact Jen Bisson,
Executive Director of Fundraising, at (603) 436-4989 or [email protected]

Resident’s Corner When Nicole came to New Generation in February,
she was six months pregnant, recovering from
substance abuse, and had dropped out of school.
She was lost and needed somewhere to turn.
When she arrived at New Generation, she was pro-
vided not only with healthy food and a warm bed, but
also with crucial support and services offered by
staff. Through our Case Management services, she
has been able to obtain her ID and social security
card, establish substance abuse counseling, and re-
enroll in school. Through the Parenting Education
Program, she has gained many skills that all parents
would benefit from. “I have a lot more patience now,”
Nicole states, citing the emphasis placed on
sympathy and empathy within the Parenting Education
Program. She has also been excited to learn more about
her child’s development, and feels empowered by her
new knowledge. She is breastfeeding her baby boy,
although it was never something she thought of doing
before coming to New Generation. She credits this to the
education she received about the benefits of breastfeed-
ing.
Nicole feels that much of her success is based on the
structure provided by New Generation. “It gives me an
example of how to structure my life,” she says. “I feel like I
am finally blossoming into a woman.”

Please join us in remembering Carole A. Helliwell, 74, who passed away in 2012, after a courageous battle with
cancer. Carole will be deeply missed by the many lives she touched. In death, she has continued to show her
generosity of spirit by leaving a lasting legacy, by remembering New Generation in her will.
Carole was deeply involved in her community and believed that helping people was of the utmost importance.
She was heavily involved in her local church, and also chaired the Building Fund for the Kittery Historical and
Naval Museum’s Andrews-Mitchell Garrison Project, served on the Rotary Club of Kittery, and worked as a
hospice volunteer for the Hospice of York. She also taught Sunday School, worked as a nurse, legal secretary,
and Personnel Administrator for Nike, Inc. She owned and operated her own business, Artistic Cake Designs, while raising her
three children, George, Jr., Catherine, and Heather, until her retirement in 1995.
New Generation is deeply grateful to Carole for her generosity and our thoughts continue to be with her friends and family.
If you would like more information how to create a lasting legacy through Planned Giving, please contact Jen Bisson, Executive Director of
Fundraising, at (603) 436-4989, or [email protected]
