TRANSCRIPT
Volume 37, Issue 8 · August 2016
Last month, I talked about making our way from being a “welcoming congregaon” to being an “inving congregaon.” The big
difference between the two is that an inving congregaon doesn’t wait for people to find their own way to the congregaon.
Rather, people within the congregaon take the first step by asking people to visit.
I want to expand things just a bit to help us think about how we do our inving. When people are invited they may have two
quesons: “what is so special about your congregaon?” and “why is being part of a congregaon important?”
The first queson can best be addressed by knowing one or two ministries that you have seen or in which you have parcipated
that you believe are important and have some impact on the lives of people or the community. I can’t tell you what they will be for
you, but think about all that goes on at Bethlehem and select one or two about which you are genuinely enthused.
The second queson can be addressed by how God’s ministries in the congregaon have made a difference in your life. It could be
worship, service, nurture, youth and family, faith and learning, or any of the many ministries that proclaim God’s grace and power
to live a new life that you have experienced. It will help people understand why being part of a congregaon might be worth giving
up their Sunday mornings.
Lastly, I would encourage you to make a plan to meet them when they first arrive at one of our congregaonal ministries. A familiar
face will be such a gi. to people who are moving into a new territory. Your presence will make all the difference for how they
experience the congregaon the first few mes. Introduce the visitors to others. Coach them through the worship service if they
need it. Point out some of the ministries that we do.
I invite you to think how you can help us make the move from being a welcoming congregaon to being a more inving
congregaon.

AUGUST FEATURED MISSION COUNCIL: YOUTH & FAMILY
One of our goals for 2016 is to “increase awareness of and participation in mission council ministries.”
Our mission councils create and direct many of the acts of ministry that the congregation does
within our community of faith and throughout the Cedar Valley and the world.
BETHLEHEM’S MONTHLY POTLUCK
will be Sunday, August 7,
following 10:30am worship.
All are welcome.
Ovens are available at 10:00am.
Two of the five Vibrant Faith principles are “Faith is
caught more than it is taught,” and “If we want
Chrisan children and youth, we need Chrisan adults
and parents.” The Youth and Family Ministry Council
brings people together so that we can catch the faith
from each other. The Council brings adults and young
people together so that what Marn Luther called the
“mutual conversaon and consolaon” of the saints
encourages our faith.
The council helps form faith by providing cross-
generaonal church-family ministries, and
youth group opportunies for elementary, jr.
high and sr. high school youth.
The council helps form faith by encouraging
and resourcing families and individuals to live
out their bapsmal covenants.
