This two-day training is intended to prepare staff to safelyprevent and manage dangerous behavior. Staff learns tointervene professionally and therapeutically using a safe,effective approach designed to prevent or reverse escalationof problem behavior and avoid the use of restraint. SafetyCare de-escalation skills work with individuals who cancommunicate verbally and those who cannot. Safety Care isbased on an Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) model andfocuses on removing/reducing environmental consequencesthat reinforce problem behavior.

Community Based Instructionwill be defined and its purposes explored. The role that theParaprofessional plays in the instruction of students in thecommunity will be outlined as well as the effective teachingmethods that must be used to facilitate active student participation and effective student learning.

Paraprofessional Academy: 8-Day Series Beginning August 22, 23, 24, 25, 20168:30 AM – 3:30 PMTraining Hours: 24 hours Presenter: OPDC ConsultantsCost: No chargeTarget Audience: Special education paraprofessionals, instructional assistants, classroom assistants, and Title I assistants

This is the first four days of an eight-day series that willprepare paraprofessionals to meet rigorous federal and statestandards and the Pennsylvania Paraeducator credential.Once the eight days have been completed in their entirety, individual assessments are complete, and supervisory approvalhas been given, the paraprofessional will be able to apply forthe PA Paraeducator credential. Participants must attendevery one of the eight sessions to meet the requirements.PLEASE USE ONLINE REGISTRATION and enter: Paraprofessional Academy-August, 2016.

Days 5 through 8 will be held during the months ofOctober 2016, January, March and May 2017.Para interviews, reception and graduation will be held on June 16, 2017 from 9:00 am-5:00 pm. This is a required component of the class for all August 2016Academy participants.

Cannot attend the August Academy but can attendfour days in June, 2017?The four training days in August will be repeated in June 2017 (June 13, 14, 15, and 16). Paraprofessional interviews, receptionand graduation will be held on the last day–June 16, 2017. If this isan option for you, then you must attend a mandatory meeting at theBCIU on October 4 from 4:00-7:30 pm. State and federal mandates hold school districts increasingly accountable for graduation rates of all students. Students with disabilities are more thantwice as likely to drop out of school compared to students without disabilities.Extensive research points to practical strategies for meeting the needs of students who demonstrate high “alterable” risk factors.

The session will provide an overview of dropout prevention research and participants will begin to develop plans for applying evidence –baseddropout prevention strategies in their school settings. Emphasis will be placed on tiered models of intervention that have been demonstrated to impact graduation rates of high-risk students in rural, suburban, and urban districts when implemented at elementary, middle, or high school levels.

for Students with Disabilities: An Overview

This session will address transition assess-ment and multi-year transition planning forstudents with disabilities who plan toattend 4 year college, community college,or technical school.
