    - For a bit of fun in Miraflores, try the small street between Parque Kennedy and Bellavista, locally known as the "calle de las pizzas" (Pizza Street). It is a big tourist trap, but on the other hand you are guaranteed to meet other travelers in high spirit.

    - At the end of Av. Larco you can find the LarcoMar amusement area, with spectacular views of the beaches, about 40 meters below it, and the Pacific Ocean, and the usual western style shopping mall shops and fast food chains.

    - Crypto, heavy metal and hard rock pub on the first side-street of Calle de las Pizzas. Unmarked entrance, just a black door. They sell pitchers of rum & coke for about $5. Excellent atmosphere if you're in the scene, but a bit intimidating for tourists who just wander in.

    - [NEED TO BOOK])

o SEE PREVIOUS PAGE FOR DETAILS The Lagoon Information

    - At the lagoon you can hire paddle boats or row boats. Its also possible to swim in the lagoon.

Dunes (Walking) Information - Soak up the views at top of the sand dunes for a rewarding, yet exhausting experience.

It will take up to an hour, depending on fitness (and which dune you pick!). The views of both the lagoon and town itself are spectacular, not to mention the rolling sand dunes on the horizon. Take a camera, plenty of water and a scarf or something to protect eyes/camera equipment from the wind swept sand at the top. Particularly beautiful at sunset

    Dune Buggy Rides Information

    - Considered by many to be the most exciting activity in Huacachina, fans of adventure sports and rollercoasters will find that taking a dune buggy ride is an essential component of a trip to southern Peru. Rides are offered by most hotels and hostals, usually for around 40-45 soles although in the low season this price may be negotiable. There is a "tax" of 3.80 soles per person which is to be paid to the driver either righ before you enter the sand area or when you return to the village. This tax is not announced when you buy your tour. It is unclear whether this payment is forced on everyone and whether it is actually a tax. Arguably the best driver in Huacachina is known as Chupon, and works exclusively for the Casa de Arena hostal. Most dune buggy tours are two hours long, which includes approximately one hour of sand boarding. The late-afternoon tour, usually starting at 4 PM, is probably the best time of day to take a tour as the sun is bright enough to illuminate the landscape but no longer bright enough to cause sunburn, and sometimes drivers will take passengers to look-out points to observe the beautiful desert sunset. The wind carries alot of sand which gets into your eyes and mouth. Wear sunglasses. Be aware that the ride resembles a roller coaster and might be quite dangerous. Drivers do all sorts of crazy stuff on the sand and vehicles are self-made and don't seem safe.

    Free Walking Tour Information

    - Starts at 12:15pm in Regocijo Square

    2) The Tram (Tranvia)

You will undoubtedly see the converted tram driving around Cusco and perhaps dismiss it for the

rather flashier tourist bus service, the tram however is a fun alternative way to see Cusco.

Departing 5 times daily from Plaza de Armas, the tram comes complete with a local Cusco Guide who

will talk to you about the local area and some of the main sites as you wind your way through the

streets of Cusco. The tram is a great way to get orientated before you set off to explore in earnest.

The tour last around 1.5 hours and you will pass by key sites such as the Plaza de Armas, Plaza

Regocijo, Avenida El Sol, the area of Wanchaq and all the way up to the statue of the white Christ

    which overlooks the City.

Not the most sophisticated of tours but a fun and different way to see the Inca capital! Tickets can be

brought on the tram or from the tram office on Plaza de Armas.

    3) Walking down from the statue of Christ

One option to follow on from the tram tour is to disembark the tram tour at the statue of Christ

overlooking Cusco. The statue provides breath taking views across the whole of Cusco, a great stop

for panoramic photos and to truly appreciate the beauty of the area.

From the statue you can now take your time and explore the fields and sites that the area above

Cusco has to offer. For th

fields that sit above the Inca capital. There are also art galleries and local restaurants dotted around

the area and this makes for a great place to get off the beaten track.

Then take a leisurely walk down towards the ruins of Sacsayhuaman, a fantastic opportunity to see the

ruins from a different view point. Down the side of the ruins are steps that take you all the way back

to Cusco. A stunning walk with amazing mountain views and vistas of Cusco from above. Why not

stop for a drink in one of the panoramic restaurants and sit and watch the sun go down.

  • 4) The Markets

Cusco is filled to the brim with markets and they are a great way to see another side to the Inca

city. Some of the more popular markets, for tourists and locals alike, are:

    1. San Pedro

Located next to Plaza San Francisco and next to the old Cusco train station, San Pedro market

provides a great opportunity to mingle with the locals. Try out your Spanish (or Quechua!) with the

market ladies as they try to sell you blankets or freshly made fruit juice. San Pedro market is filled

with unusual shops, colours and smells and beautiful architecture, a real treasure to explore.

    2. Wanchaq

If local sights and smells are your thing then Wanchaq market provides both. A short walk from the

historic centre of Cusco, Wanchaq market provides locals with a plethora of items from dog food to

fresh cut flowers as well as being home to some fantastic fresh made fruit juices and cheap and

    tasty local food.

    3. Artisanal

Set at the bottom of Avenda El Sol the main avenue in Cusco, the Artisans market is a tourist

shopping haven. Home to everything alpaca and jewellery up to the ceiling, make sure you visit

here before you leave and stock up on all those Peruvian presents!

    4. Molino

Molino market is home to the bootleg everything and also a great place to try the local delicacy of

Cuy (Guinea Pig!). So if you are in need of some clothing or shoes or perhaps some local music or

cakes, then Molino is the place to go.

As always, make sure you take extra care of your belongings but particularly in the markets, just

take out with you what you need for the day

July 12, 2014 [Rest Day] Machu Picchu Rest Day

July 13, 2014 Machu Picchu Name: 4D/3N Lares Trek Link: http://www.alpacaexpeditions.net/ The 4D/3N Lares Trek is amazing and has the special addition of visiting a local village on the first night. Because the Lares trek is not regulated by the Peruvian government, you don't have to worry about a permit, but it also means there is not someone looking after the trail and making sure its well maintained. We try to do as much as we can - when we do the Lares trek or any alternative trek we always bring an extra porter just to help clean the trail from garbage other hikers leave behind. When we visit the village that first night, we try to encourage the kids to help us with that job. We create a huge vat of hot cocoa and each kid who brings some garbage gets a cup (to be honest, they all do, but it makes a fun game). You get to really see how they live and spend time with them, its really special. The first two nights of the trek are camping and then the third night is spent in a hotel in Aguas Calientes. That last morning you will wake up really early to catch one of the first buses up to the ruins to hopefully see the sunrise before you begin your tour of Machu Picchu.
