Preschool/PreK (Ages 21/2 – 4)Weekly themes come to life as our youngest campers learn, explore, and engage in imaginative camp-style activities that promote STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) learning. Mandarin ImmersionPreschool/PreK (Ages 21/2 – 4)(Altadena campus only)Our Preschool/Pre-kindergarten camp is presented in a full Mandarin immersion environment. We combine our thematic STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) and inquiry-based instruction with learning-enriched activities that promote Mandarin language acquisition and other foundational skills development, including math, fine and large motor skills, and music. Students will develop new school experiences and socialization skills. This is a five-day full-day PS/PK mixed-age camp offered only at our Altadena campus.

Kindergarten Prep (Ages 4 – 5)Get campers ready for Kindergarten! Our Jr. Camper program is specifically designed for those campers entering Kindergarten in the fall. During the morning, Jr. Campers will work on the skills necessary for success in Kindergarten, such as phonics, fluency, math, printing, and social skills. Multimedia Storytelling for Past, Present, and FutureThe communities we live in are full of history of the past, stories of the present, marks for the future. As community historians, we help uncover, re-tell, and compose the stories of the communities across the space-time continuum.

Money Mastery for KidsIn California, one in five households report spending more than their household income. It becomes ever more important for children to practice smart financial decision-making from a young age. The goal of Money Mastery for Kids is for students to grasp the concept of budgeting and to learn about balancing the two key components, income versus spending. They will learn about the value of money and how they can raise income and/or make choices to decrease spending, helping them be more in tune with their needs versus wants and preparing them to be the stewards of their financial future.

Mystery Reading Detective Adventure (Grades 1 – 2 and 3 – 5)Uncover clues and solve mysteries in quality literature with this class focused on reading comprehension, critical thinking, logic, and vocabulary. Discover rich vocabulary and context clues used to solve daily mystery puzzles. Students will participate in a final mystery project in which literary clues and characters will inform solutions. Students will receive a Detective First Class certificate at the end of the session.

Chinese Wonderland (Grades 1 – 5)Campers explore Chinese culture and language through a wide variety of hands-on activities focusing on Chinese superstitions and ancient art this year. The camp aims to highlight key elements of Chinese culture and strengthen campers appreciation for global communities through collaborative, interactive lessons, and activities. Campers learn new vocabulary, phrases and apply their language skills in group projects and presentations. It is a great opportunity to develop broader appreciation for the Mandarin language and Chinese culture. Both Mandarin and non-Mandarin speakers are welcomed to join.

De-Mything Chinese Superstitions Every culture has its own superstitions. Chinese culture with its rich history is particularly rich in beliefs, customs, and superstitions. Why Chinese people don’t sweep the floor on New Year’s Day? Why eight is a lucky number and four is a curse? Why Chinese people don’t flip fish on a plate or jab chopsticks in a bowl of rice?

Campers will be introduced to some of the superstitions through Chinese Festival celebrations and daily life experience. Students will learn the symbolic meanings of these superstitions and carry out some fun activities to turn bad luck into good fortune. Campers will develop a broader appreciation for Chinese culture and showcase their learning through a Chinese Shadow puppet play on the final day of the camp! Come and explore with us!

Determine how journalists verify sources, research facts, combine information, and communicate information in writing. Students will create a News Hour exhibition on the final day of class. A link to the student News Hour video will be provided to participants and parents.

At the end of the session, students will create and publish storyboard cartoons to accompany their polished stories and books.

Speech and Debate (Grades 4 – 5) Do you feel that your child is a budding attorney? If your student loves to Debate, this is the perfect class! Speech and Debate instructors will guide students through the processes of research, writing, and performance that are required to be effective at public speaking. Students will learn how to articulate and support their ideas about current events. Through the process of carefully preparing statements, students will also learn confidence and patience skills.

Engineering to Save Our Planet (Grades 1 – 2)Come explore the many marvels of the engineering world! Campers will learn engineering design principles through open-ended innovations inspired by an interesting mix of materials. Working in teams, students will explore engineering adventures through interactive games and activities. Young scientists will learn about mechanical and package engineering and will participate in “Safe Removal of Invasive Species” and “Engineering Aid Drop Packages.” Students will increase their project collaboration skills, understand how to solve design problems, and provide real-world engineering solutions.

LEGO Robotics (Grades 3 – 5) Using the third-generation LEGO Mindstorms EV3 Robotics kit, students will learn to build various robots, such as an EV3 puppy and an EV3 color-sorter. In addition, students will practice teamwork and collaboration while focusing on important concepts such as loops, control flow and conditionals, and hardware components, including motors and sensors.

Come Fly with Me – Aero Engineering (Grades 3 – 5)Innovation is the name of the game in this interactive class designed to teach knowledge and application of engineering principles. Young scientists will learn about aeronautical and aerospace engineering, including interesting adventures such as “Engineering Flying Technologies” and “Liftoff - Rockets and Rovers.” Students will learn how to use engineering as a tool, and how to apply it to a variety of projects and activities in a dynamic and open-ended learning environment.

LEGO Robotics (Grades 1 – 2) With Stratford’s LEGO Robotics, students will explore hands-on engineering concepts and will learn to work in a collaborative and team environment. Using WeDo Robotics software, participants will be introduced to basic concepts in computer science through block programming. With the LEGO Education WeDo Robotics kit, campers will learn to build and program simple robots, such as a drumming monkey, a roaring lion, and many more.

In a block-coding environment, students will learn how to apply coding skills to real-world problems and activities. Students will balance their time between coding independently and working together with classmates on assignments.

Participants will have fun coding various game projects by detecting obstacles and adding score components. No previous programming experience required.

SPORTSSports Medley (Grades 1 – 2 and 3 – 5)This dynamic sports program leads kids through four different sports: kickball, Wiffle Ball, soccer, and flag football. This sampler course will give campers an introduction and practice for each sport and provide opportunities for further practice in their favorite choices. Wacky Robots and Widgets (Grades 1 – 5)Whether you love to build things or destroy them, this camp includes lots of both! Design and build structures using simple tools and your imagination! The machine madness starts when you discover how different machines, both simple and complex, are used in our daily lives. Build contraptions using simple machines, experiment with catapults, and use your skills to build a robot you get to keep!

Young Inventors (Grades 1 – 5)Creative Contraption Warning! This camp is designed by you — the Inventor! Each day you’ll be given a series of challenges that must be overcome using basic materials, simple machines, tips from world-famous inventors, and the most important thing of all — your imagination! With a little ingenuity, you’ll construct catapults and forts, and then lay siege to a castle. Assemble your own working light stick and prepare to rule the galaxy! Although Thomas Edison said, “Invention is” 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration, this camp is 100% fun!

Spy Academy (Grades 1 – 5)From decoding messages to metal detectors and night vision, campers check out spy tech equipment and take home lots of gadgets! Become a super spy, and learn clever ways of performing tasks as we take a hands-on view of the science that spies and detectives use! (Children must know how to read and how to write full sentences.)

Middle School Prep (Grade 6)Get campers ready for Middle School! Incoming Sixth Grade students spend part of each morning on life skills development (e.g., social-emotional learning, cyber wellness, organization, study skills) that will prepare them socially and emotionally so they can thrive in their Middle School years. They spend the bulk part of their morning on refining and enriching their language arts and math academic skills. Students will hone their language arts skills through vocabulary, novel study, grammar practice, and paragraph/essay composition. Pre-algebra concepts will be covered with a diverse mix of word problems, properties, and written expressions. MS Prep is a combo program that focuses on educating the head as well as the heart.

Mystery Reading Detective Adventure (Grades 6 – 8)Uncover clues and solve mysteries in quality literature with this class focused on reading comprehension, critical thinking, logic, and vocabulary. Discover rich vocabulary and context clues used to solve daily mystery puzzles. Students will participate in a final mystery project in which literary clues and characters will inform solutions. Students will receive a Detective First Class certificate at the end of the session.

In this course, students will learn about the urban farming revolution, how plants can be grown in cities, and the impacts urban farming can have on their communities.

Performing Arts (Grades 6 – 8)Does your child have unlimited energy and creativity? Does he or she sing along to favorite songs and movies? Ending with a performance showcase for friends and families, Stratford’s drama program will teach budding actors skills in singing, dancing, acting, prop and set design, and stage direction. This collaborative experience will give students confidence in performing, stage presence, and public speaking. This course will challenge and inspire your young movie star!

Surgical Techniques (Grades 6 – 8)Investigating how the body works, students participate in a range of hands-on activities — such as dissections and the construction of life-sized physiological system maps.
