“I had a career for a few years before law school, but since coming to ONU, I have felt empowered in a way that I never really did before. I know now that success is in my grasp, and I attribute that in large part to the support and concern of the faculty and the administration at ONU.”

SUCCESS STORIES - PAGE 5

What is theSummer Starter ProgramThe Summer Starter Program is a unique opportunity for students whose outstanding undergraduate performance indicates probable academic success in graduate school despite disproportionate LSAT scores. This eight-week program, consisting of two first-year courses (eight credit hours), provides our students with the one-on-one attention necessary to be successful in law school. From individual weekly meetings with your academic support advisor, to weekly group teaching assistant (TA) sessions, you will learn the study skills to set you apart from those students entering in the fall. Many of our Summer Starter students end up in the top of the class at the conclusion of their first year. This, in addition to hard work, can be credited to the skills and confidence acquired from completing the Summer Starter Program. Once you have completed the program, you are automatically enrolled into the fall entering class. It is not necessary to re-apply.

What makes it worth it?

[verbatim]

As a participant in the Summer Starter Program, we want to take students that fall within its parameters and give them the tools to become successful law students. The Summer Starter program provides small classes, emphasizes individual attention, and promotes student participation and class interaction. The rigorous eight-week program challenges students through a demanding schedule of first-year law courses with frequent examinations and evaluations. We believe that taking the time to participate in the program will provide students with a “leg up” in their legal education, and is a productive use of your summer. If your goal is to become an accomplished law student and attorney, don’t pass up this opportunity to let ONU become a partner in your legal education.

The Summer Starter Program was truly beneficial in helping ease my test-taking anxiety. Throughout the program, you attend seminars on test-taking, you meet one-on-one with your advisors for test feedback, and you learn what to expect for the fall semester exams.

Non-Conditional:ONU Law is still interviewing applicants for a limited number of spots in our unique Summer Starter Program. At this point, we are sure you have learned about the summer programs offered at numerous other law schools. However, we guarantee that the Summer Starter Program is com-pletely unique to ONU Law. We provide the summer program as a completely non-conditional opportunity to those students invited to attend. What this means for you is that once you have interviewed and been accepted into the program, you are automatically enrolled as a member of the fall 2013 class. There is no reapplication involved and no minimum GPA you must reach.

No Additional Cost:Affording law school is a top concern for all students, and ONU Law strives to make law school financially attainable for each of our students. Our commitment to affordability extends to our Summer Starter Program by offering each student enrolling in the summer a scholarship in the amount of $10,208. This scholarship covers the entire cost of the summer program; therefore Summer Starters incur no additional cost as a result of participation in this program.

True Impact:The Summer Starter Program places students on the trajectory for success at ONU Law. Summer Starters serve in leadership roles as members of all three classes, many as members of the Editorial Board of Law Review, the Executive Board of Moot Court, and the Student Bar Association, among other student organizations. Academically, Summer Starters are ranked among the top 10 of each class, and the valedictorians of the classes of 2005 and 2008 were Summer Starters. Summer Starters land teaching assistant positions, receive book awards, compete on national and international moot court teams, and act as peer mentors. The jump start you receive as a Summer Starter provides a strong foundation so that your achievements at ONU Law are limitless.

KEESHA N. WARMSBY, ESQ., JD ’10Associate, Bricker & Eckler LLP - Columbus, OhioParticipating in the Summer Starter Program enabled me to be-come acclimated to the law school environment. At the start of the fall semester, I had a good idea of what to expect regarding the coursework and exams. During the summer, I took weekly tests and met with an ONU faculty member to discuss the re-sults. By the time fall semester exams began, I understood my strengths and weaknesses. The Summer Starter Program at ONU is unlike any other. Not only did I gain confidence in myself early on, but the fast paced program provided a solid founda-tion to my legal career.

ASHLEY L. GRIFFIN, ESQ., JD ’08Thomson, Rhodes & Cowie P.C. - Pittsburgh, Pa.Ohio Northern fills its classrooms with law students who are not only intelligent, but those often-overlooked individuals who hail from diverse backgrounds, have dynamic personalities, sharp legal reasoning skills, inquisitive minds, and an ardent desire to enter the legal profession and make a difference in society. I credit my experience with the Summer Starter Program for get-ting me where I am today.

EDWARD P. CANTERBURY, ESQ., JD ’05Henderson, Franklin, Starnes & Holt P.A. - Ft. Myers, Fl.The Summer Starter Program is an excellent introduction to law school. The testing and feedback from professors is frequent, which eases the difficult transition from college. By the end of the summer, you should have a good foundation for recognizing and analyzing legal issues.
